Surreal moment hit home when a friend on Facebook changed his status to something along the lines of wanting to find a decent bonsai tree. It was really hectic, because I have been looking around online and doing a little reading about the beautiful trees and this was just interesting to hear that someone else was on my level.
I quickly grabbed a couple images I had bookmarked on my computer of the precious trees and here they are. These aren’t the best of the best, but they are still so elegant.

The main reason for posting this article is in hope that a conversation can be started and maybe some information put together for those people who share mine and Malcolms interest in the delicate trees.
Leave a comment behind and let’s discuss this and share ideas.

Bonsai trees are wonderful. I have a couple that I grew from seed, some that I’m training from pot plants and a few that I got as gifts.
Just a few words of caution if you’re really interested in this Chris. Local types of trees are usually a bit better (and more forgiving) than the foreign ones. Don’t over-trim the branches, don’t be too shy when you trim roots during the once a year (at least once every second year re-potting) and if you’re going to pick up interesting rocks to add to your trees then make sure that they’re clean from nasty stuff like salt before you add them or you might see a 6 year old tree croak for no reason whatsoever.(very sad…I feel so guilty even now)
Other than that, it’s a nice way to spend a morning with just your trees and your thoughts. Good luck! :-)
Oh wow, it sounds like you are leaps and bounds ahead in the bonsai tree area!
I think I will need to get a book and do some good reading before purchasing one. They are rather expensive to buy and allow to slowly wither away. I’d rather understand how to manage it and then purchase one. I also need to look into the sunlight factor based on how my studio is going to look, etc.
See, my rear passion is for tropical fish and I won’t be able to start that up again for another couple months unfortunately.
Thanks for your thoughts. Hopefully Malcolm will pop in and take a read and comment too.
Most books recommend morning sun ;-)
Morning sun, ok, well that should be good then, my studio will be racing the rising side :)
go check out http://www.orientalarts.co.za/olivegrove/index.htm and visit them – awesome, huuuuge place!
nice outing and i can highly recommend them.
That’s what I like to hear! I will definitely check out the website and pay them a visit. Malcolm will be stoked for the URL too – thanks Heino!
cool!
almost forgot about the place until i saw this post ;)
Hehe, I see there is a beginner course on the 17th, I might be keen to get to that before the new year starts and the prices hike!
This year’s bonsai show is coming up in a few weeks for those who are interested: http://imod.co.za/index.php/2010/12/01/annual-bonsai-show/
