Annoyed with Who’s Online Facebook application

Who’s Online Facebook Application

Facebook application Who’s Online by Applehat Studios has 87,053 daily active users. 87,053 users with a lot of annoyed friends. You can’t block Who’s Online.

Even if you have changed your privacy settings in Facebook to not say whether you are online or not, this application does not take these settings into account, so basically there is no way to invisibly surf Facebook. Personally, I have myself set to invisible, and now that this application is out, I might as well unblock my invisibility.

Facebook need to step up and stop this application.

Somehow, this doesn’t surprise me at all. You’d think the developers would get the point of how users value their privacy by now, but I guess that won’t be happening any time soon.

  2. Chris M says:

Ye, I mean one of the biggest selling points of this application will be the fact that you can bypass someones privacy settings, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Facebook rid themselves of the application in the near future.

  3. sergey says:

facebook doesnt value your privacy, nor does it care about you. )

  4. Chris M says:

Sjoe, strong words there sergey, I don’t completely agree with you, but I value your opinion.

  5. sergey says:

well think about it, if they have a hard time monetizing in,which is silly, what can the possibly sell besides your information?
    also watch this: http://www.albumoftheday.com/facebook/

even if fraction of it is true, then what? )

  6. Chris M says:

Well, obviously there is the element of personal information reselling, but 90% of people who are online have already submitted their personal information all over the place, besides, does it really matter if they resell our information? Perhaps we’ll get some extra emails or an insurance phone call, etc. but at the end of the day, Facebook has provided people with a fantastic medium to communicate, and not only that, but allows people to grow business relationships too.

I think if we were to run a poll, most people would favour Facebook over the worry of their privacy.

Don’t get me wrong, I would normally be arguing on your side of the argument mate, I just feel that with Facebook, things are slightly different based on the incredible service they have supplied to everyone.

I guess we’ll see what comes of Facebook and our information, but honestly, I don’t think we need worry about them selling our information at the moment.

I still feel that the application should be stopped, or at least, the developers should incorporate the privacy options users have chosen.

Interesting topic, Facebook vs Privacy :)

i’m not saying you should stop using facebook and stop using internet for that matter. i think you have to, as it became so day to day for a lot for people.

i’m saying that most people who use facebook don’t know what they get themselves into. they don’t know about privacy policy htat isnt in their favor.

also, what fields do you feel in on the facebook? i remember when it first came about in 2004, people put everything about themselves. and i mean, everything their shoe size.

google stores your information and knows everything about you, what can you do? nothing at all. ) i think ask.com offers a service where they erase all information about your search history or places you went too FOREVER, rather than storing it somewhere on the server.

    the poll should say:
are you worried about your privacy on facebook? ) i bet noone will, cuz people don’t care.. )

  8. Chris M says:

Ah, then I totally agree, most people have no clue what information they are putting out there. I could run around through hundreds of profiles and steal perfectly marketable information – which is a risk, I do agree!

Ye, people are ignorant and they do say ‘ignorance is bliss’, so you are spot on and I completely agree with you.

Shall I run a poll on iMod and see what comes?

  9. sergey says:

ignorance is bliss until it bites you in the ass.

    yea do that :)
it would be cool to see the results.
make sure its worded nicely too.
i guess ill signed up for your feed now. )

  10. Chris M says:

    Absolutely.

Ah nice one! Always great to have a couple people on board :)

    Will setup the poll now!

I have to say that I totally agree with what your saying about this application, and wasn’t aware of its existence before reading this post.

I think its about time facebook started to keep a tighter hold on this developer platform to a) stop as many rubbish applications appearing and b) make sure that they all comply with the account settings facebook hold on you.

There are times when you dont want people to know you have been online, or you dont want the world to monitor your activity.

Something should be done. The poll is a good idea, and I think Ill sign up to your feed actually, nice blog.

  12. Chris M says:

    Hi ajclarkson,

Ye, some applications are useful and some are just complete rubbish. I get sick of the invites, but that’s one thing, another is what you said about ‘keeping a tighter hold on the developer’. I definitely think Facebook should initiate a better process, which checks an application for more credentials before just unleashing it to the world.

I like to surf Facebook invisibly purely for the fact that I don’t always have time to chat to people and if they see that I am online there, they will try hit me up on MSN or Gtalk, etc. If there was an ‘Christopher is online, but idle/away’, then we could be talking useful!

Thanks for subscribing, another person on board, motivates me to blog more – awesome!

    :-)

  13. esvl says:

I agree, most things about Facebook annoy me though. I stick to using Mybloglog. Might not be the same type of thing but I like it because it’s like turning your blog into Facebook.

  14. Chris M says:

esvl, fair enough. I’ve often thought of closing my Facebook account, but for 2 reasons I don’t:

    1. It’s a great medium to spread word
    2. They already have all my information

So I guess I’ll be sticking with the Facebook for a while :)

  15. esvl says:

I guess it is a great medium to spread word. I just use mybloglog or blogcatalog because I am a bit lazy.

  16. Chris M says:

Hehe, mybloglog and blogcatalog are great mediums too, I use them as you can see :)
