It’s taken a while, but it looks like folks in Japan can now finally get their hands on Asus’s diminutive and eminently-hackable Eee PC, although not exactly the same models we have ’round these parts. Dubbed the Eee PC 4G-X, the Japan-centric laptop is apparently identical to the regular 4G model, with the notable exception that it now comes pre-loaded with Windows XP Home Edition as standard instead of the usual Linux OS.

That, of course, takes up a hefty chunk of the 4GB of internal storage, so Asus has thoughtfully 4GB SDHC card with the laptop as well. Look for it to be available in your choice of black or white for ¥50,000 (or about $468), with free access to NTT’s WiFine hotspot network thrown in for good measure.

You can import one for a tad under R3 500 all costs incl, just watch out for the keyboard layouts. One of my buddies ordered one… QWERTZ keyboard. Anyone learned to type in Germany?
Interesting, I’m not really a fan of these little computers, but I could actually see a great use for them now!
German.. OUCH!
Yeah this device is totally useless for viewing pr0n, no point in buying it then is there?
Seriously though, I wouldn’t ever work on it, but for messing around it should be great.
That’s very true, I prefer a 23″ widescreen for that, but I guess it’s perfect for a little sneak peak now and then ye?
I guess if you’re running around all day with meetings and things, then it’s a good thing to have, a little more than a palmtop, etc.
For me, I’d use it if I was given it, I wouldn’t go out and buy one :)
I am getting 1 for birthday and i had a look at them at pc world they are puah class hee hee lol :) Deffently 1 in pink!!!!
@Lizzy – you are really lucky! How much do they go for these days?
I almost bought one a few days ago myself. But after doing some research, the 2G (the one i cud buy) has its ram and HDD soldered on. making it impossible to upgrade. I saw em in Thailand late last year and almost fell over when i heard the price. Don’t be fooled tho, those lil cretins pack a punch of note. They run on linux and come preinstalled with most major apps that u’ll need!
I travel a fair amount and its IMPOSSIBLE to use a 15.4″ laptop on a plane, this is perfect cos it slips into a backpack like mayo on a burger!
Upgrading would be a problem is that’s the case, risky purchase, but then again it all depends on what it is going to be used for I guess.
Traveling with a 15.4″ laptop is a nightmare, this would most definitely be a way better purchase!
These things are so damn great cos they have opened the eyes of the consumer to Open Source products as a full replacement to propriety software.
If consumer education in this space increase, the pressure will be felt in the Microsoft house a bit more than it is now and hopefully spice up the cost structure of these products a bit as well.
A friend of mine was going to buy one, but decided to go for a macbook pro instead. Have you played one one of these before?
We’re busy having a discussion about this, apparetntly the 901 is going to be amazing..
I’m in shock that your friend compared this to a McB Pro! That’s a bit like comparing a calculator to a Nokia N95!!!
Hehe, the comparison wasn’t made from a performance point of view per say, but rather a convenience point of view, sorry, I should have elaborated a bit more..
serioulsy considering buying one of these machines. linux is really a great operating system but not for the average n00b on the street. the size is what i really admire the most about the eeepc even at the cost of not having an optical drive. the screen size on the other hand is well not to my liking but i can live with that, or wait for the 900 series or something. other than that i would love to tinker around with this machine. a great way to get everybody to have a computer especially in africa. i love it…
Ye bud, I think it’s the perfect little machine for someone who just does every day business activities. I’ve thought of getting myself one for quite some time now, but can’t justify it yet as I have a powerful desktop and laptop..
