I decided that I needed to upgrade to WordPress 2.51, as I was running on a near dead 2.3.3 version still. As I had completely hacked up my own theme, I was really worried about the upgrade, so I backed up absolutely everything, all 400mb.
These are the steps I took:
- Backup everything
- Change .htaccess to display a upgrading index.html file
- Download WP 2.51
- Upload all root files
- Upload wp-admin
- Upload wp-includes
- Run upgrade file
- Change .htaccess back
It worked as smoothly as ever without a single problem (yet). I’m quite impressed that I didn’t run into any problems and am very happy to be running on 2.51 now – Gota love the new dashboard!
As you can see, I’ve removed a couple things from the page and have been working on optimizing the website to reduce the load time. I’ve managed to reduce load times by 75% which is rocking – there were multiple calls to css files, badly coded js files for ajax functions, so after spotting all of that with Firebug, we managed to remove duplicates, rewrite the code and now things are pumping!
Big thanks to HoTsTePPa for all the optimization help!

This mornings testing put ur front page at 17.57 seconds, u better be bouncing off the walls! :)
Fantastic, it’s great knowing that it’s not a huge mission to actually click around and read a couple articles! =)
I find with WP2.5 and the latest upgrade, that I am unable to delete images in the media library and edit or delete tags. Is it just me or is there a bit of a bug.
I can’t seem to add images to posts using WP 2.51 for some reason. I have to manually upload to the FTP, then hard code the links in :/
Yes, have same problem. I read in the WP forum how to solve the problem but it does not make sense. They blame it on a bad installation. My arse!
I use Windows Live Writer to post and upload pictures. Works like a chanrm. Word 2007 also does a great job as well as Firefox Scribefire plug in. Hardly ever use WP itself unles to edit. Maybe 2.5 was bad upgrade idea.
:)
Ah, I should look into using Windows Live Writer again or there’s another great program, which I forgets name :/
Ya, my installation was perfect, their fault!
