Free up more memory with Firefox 3

As we all know, Firefox is the best browser and the only minor set back was the amount of memory usage it incurred. Since the release of Firefox 3, this issue has been dealt with a great deal and now I have something to help free up even more memory!

RAMBack will cause Firefox to issue an internal notification to free up memory that is otherwise held for performance purposes. Additional items will be hooked into this notification in the future.

  1. A lot of my FF addons don’t work with version 3. It’s a bit disappointing that the developers of the addons haven’t felt motivated to upgrade them to be FF3 compatible.

Off on a tangent, I read an article on El Reg about AVG’s link scanner giving webmasters a headache. AVG version 8 has a link scanner feature that scans search results for bad web sites (while you’re still deciding what links if any you are going to follow).

So the problem is that AVG is generating a traffic overhead. It’s behaving almost like a DDOS. As more people install AVG 8, so AVG traffic on the Net will increase.

AVG also uses a user agent which makes it look like a normal web browser using IE6, because it doesn’t want to tip malware sites off to its presence.

So webmasters cannot differentiate normal traffic from AVG link scanner traffic.

It seems like a case of the cure being worse than the problem.

I was wondering what you thought of this issue?

Wait, how exactly does this work? For example, if I load a bunch of tabs, then what will this plugin do?

@R Catto – The AVG problem will eventually be cured by its global caching service. Naturally it will be real crap in the begining, but by the time it has been used a few thousand time globally and they manage to tweak the caching server to somehow do the scan without killing TOO much bandwidth, I think they might end up with a great product feature!

    Teething issues, i hope!

Richard – Agreed, the lack of addon support is rather annoying!

Maria – The addon will just manage the memory more accurately, I don’t see it changing or affecting anything per say!

HoTsTePPa – Agreed, it’s only just been released, the next automatic update should handle it all!

Got something to say? Go for it!
