Google Search and Cuil Search

As we all know, Google is a power house, there’s really no point in me explaining it and what services Google has on offer, as we all know already. Google is by far the most popular search engine to ever hit the Internet and now, all of a sudden (well, sort of), cuil has appeared and is, from what I can tell, racing to try and become as popular!

After doing a little looking into cuil, I noticed their catch phrase, which is “Welcome to Cuil—the world’s biggest search engine. The Internet has grown. We think it’s time search did too.” The world’s biggest search engine? Really? Cuil has claimed to have index over 120 billion web pages, three times more than any other search engine, unfortunately neither Cuil nor anyone else has enough information to verify such a claim. Bloggers over at ValleyWag claim that Cuil is just another hype, which gives journalists something to write about.

Cuil‘s (pronounced coo-ill) philosophy is to solve two things: How to index the whole Internet and how to analyse and sort its pages so you get relevant results. cuil comes packed with a number of interesting features and is powered by a team with many years of experience in search, fancy degrees and even members who have worked for Google!

I must say that I do like cuil’s search interface screen, but the results page is far too heavy! I am going to keep posted and watch their movements as I’m sure they have a ton of things up their sleeves, but it’s going to take an incredibly long time, especially seeing that their Alexa rank is sitting on 1,090,420!

What’s most ironic is that I did all my research using Google ;)

I dont usually write negative, or i try not to but Cuil is a bit disappointing. They send me some traffic but of stuff that is just not there anymore. All the traffic I get from them is real old stuff. But I guess we have to give em a change to prove themselves ey.

Or has that chance come and gone?

Ag I guess time will tell how they will do.

After watching the video in my post, Chris Hogg was correct, new ventures on the Internet normally only get 1 chance and I feel that cuil has had its chance. The one thing that might have me going back there again is that they are ex Google employees, which makes me think that they’ll have a really good plan of attack and hopefully we’ll see something new happen, but otherwise, I’m not very impressed so far..

i think its pronounced “cool” from what i’ve read.

it’s a newbie to the market and the results aren’t as good as google in my opinion – but people are very quick to shoot the new guy down i’d like to see how they go.

quite a funny story about one of their search results giving the wrong image here -> http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/29/cuil_launch/

I’m not pessimistic just yet. Ok, so they failed when it came to riding the hype wave. But they’re still brand new, and they have many more pages to crawl, index, and rank. I’d give them a month before making any judgements.

Remember that Google was there just about from the beginning – Cuil has to jump in the deep end and make it work. No prizes for guessing that it might take a while to gain momentum. Hype can only do so much.

Mike.. correct! I’m definitely going to follow their progress, they have a powerful team, which makes me think that we can expect some new and interesting things from them. I do think that they launched their media campaigns a little early, I wonder if they’ll use Adwords to advertise :P
