I went through to my folks place, this evening, to have a braai with my father and brother, as my mother and sister are off jolling in jozzie for a week. What a delicious braai we had, the ostrich steak was unbelievably delicious!
After the braai, my Dad handed me his DivX player, which he bought and has decided not to use anymore. I happily accepted the player, as I don’t have satelite at the Cape Town flat – cannot justify spending 500bux a month to surf channels. I headed home, placed an old 80GB HDD into the player and moved onto testing it out.

As you can see, I ran into a problem with the silly plastic male socket. Needless to say, after 45mins or so, I’d successfully carved away grooves in the female cable so that I could squeeze it in – iMod(ify)! I plugged everything in, turned it on and Bob’s your uncle.

After loading up some movies, I ventured towards my 32″ Samsung LCD TV and plugged the player in. I changed the source and saw a menu display, which allowed me to select the movie of my choice.

The picture quality is brilliant, I’m really chuffed with this new toy! Now I just need to fork out some cash to get myself a lovely home theatre system and a table to hide those ugly cables and match the coffee table!

When I come around for those red glasses of wine, I’m bringing my glue gun and some trunking to hide that messy wire-nest you have there!!
Those players are neat as hell ;) Hook ur PC up to that TV and we’re really talking!
Ye mate, the reason I’ve not done anything is that I want to buy a matching contemporary white gloss table for below the TV and that will hide the wires, which I will secure better as well :)
No need to hook a PC up, that’s why we got this :)
BWHAHAHAHHA dude i did the exact same thing with the same wire!!!!!!
We can only be geeks my friend!!
HAHAH
Hahhahahah, brilliant dude, just brilliant!
Geeks alike :)
Looks good, but how many movies can a 80GB hard drive store? About 16 I think.
Does it only take IDE drives? Or SATA2 as well?
Well, at 700mb for a good quality DivX movie, and 80GB being roughly 82,000mb, let’s call it around 117 movies if I’m capable of doing math at 3am :)
wow, very nice!!
I actually went searching something similar, and you actually get “wireless media players” with USB,HDD,network connectivity so you can stream from your home server etc.
Looks very neat and clean.
Absolutely! This one is a fairly old model, but it’s basically a carrier for a HDD, so you can stick whatever size drive you want in it. It connects via USB for easy copying of files. What it doesn’t have is wireless, cos now, that would be DAMN useful :)
Did you find one?
A DVD is 4.5GB of data. How do DivX movies shrink down to 700MB?
found quite a few on Jump, found a nice D-Link one ( http://www.wantitall.co.za/D-Link-DSM-520-MediaLounge-Wireless-HD-Media-Player__B000A4AVQO ), but would like to have DVD tray as well, just so it is really a combo of everything in one.
That’s a pretty wicked one! Well, I’m planning on getting a surround sound system, which should come with a dvd player, should sort that problem out..
@Richard – Duno why your comments are being blocked mate, no idea! You can convert them into 700mb .avi files :)
How do you do that?
use a dvd to divx converter

Ye, there are plenty of tools you can use to convert and handle the compression..
