Johannesburg – AngelMoola, a private South African company, has started an online social lending service as an alternative for people rattled by turmoil in the traditional financial sector, it said on Thursday.
CEO Brian Dalton said the company aimed to attract R4.32-billion in funds within a year by allowing South Africans to borrow and lend money to each other on the Internet instead of using conventional bank methods.
“We’ve set a figure of around R360-million a month (as a target), over the next 12 months,” Dalton told Reuters in an interview.
“From a lender perspective, the stock markets are a bit of a wobbly, shaky deal at the moment, so people are looking for something a bit more secure to put their money into, and that’s why this is probably a good option for them.”
Dalton said AngelMoola, which is the first online social lending exchange in Africa, plans to expand into Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique, and it aims to list on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange Alt-X segment in the next three years.
Its pilot website had around 5 500 hits in the first week when it was launched in May. Social lending sites have already started in some other countries, including the United States and Japan. – Reuters

Guys, always ask yourself the question: if a so called “registered, legitimate and certified private financial lender” is able to provide a loan of millions of US$ or Euros or GBP then why does he or she has a “gmail” “yahoo” or any other FREE email account????????? I refer to your requests for more information on people offering loans and the post by Johan above. Do you verify these guys who place these ads? Is there investigation into their ‘claimed companies’? What Johan says rings 100% true. Why are they advertising with gmail addresses and the like.

Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to build up a network of contacts that are willing to lend me money as and when I need it. It’s pretty simple: I offer them a rate better than they’d get investing their money at the bank, but I’m paying less than I would to borrow from the bank (there’s a big spread to work with). Then, I make sure that I treat them exactly as I would the bank – never miss a payment, don’t play games, and respect the fact that they’ve put their trust in you…
So far, it’s worked like a charm for me, and I’m looking forward to being on the other side of the fence by the end of this year :)
(And before anyone asks: No, I will not be sharing my investors’ names with anyone, so please don’t ask)

For those of you who don’t know, Gareth is a financial advisor who does consulting at very decent rates and would be a good person to contact should you wish to get your financials more in tact. Basically, what I did was network with individuals who I know have extra money lying around from time to time – generally business owners, retired executives, and the like – at braai’s, conferences, through friends, etc. You get to find this out when talking about finances in general – the topic will often turn to how they’re struggling to find somewhere worthwhile to put their money in. Also, for a lot of these guys, they’ve reached a point in their lives where they want to start ‘giving back’.
I’d then mention to them that I’m looking at borrowing some money to expand my businesses. I’d never force the issue, but I’d get the contact details of those that showed at least some interest. When the time came that I actually needed the money, I’d drop them an email explaining everything (my background, what I wanted to use the money for, why I think it’s a good investment, how long I’d want to pay it back over, the interest rates I’m offering, any security I can offer, etc).
Important to remember is that you can’t go looking for a free hand-out. Anybody who considers lending to you wants primarily to know how risky you are, and then factors that into whether/how much they’re prepared to lend to you. At first, I compensated for this risk by offering a higher interest rate (20% a year). As I built up a history of being a good borrower (never missing payments, always on time) I’ve been able to bring down the interest rates, as I’m seen as less of a risk. At the moment, I’m paying 9-12% on the money I’ve borrowed – this is much less than I’d pay to get it from the bank, and at the same time I’m making the lender a better return than he’d be getting sitting on cash in a savings acount.
You’ve got to make it a win-win situation…
That’s fantastic advice, I hope that the readers can learn from this; Borrowing money from just anyone isn’t the right move and forcing the borrow is even worse, it shows desperation, which never worlds in the borrowers favour. I think a problem a huge number of people have is that they want to borrow money, but they haven’t sat down and written out a plan about borrowing the money, explaining where the money is going, why it’s going there and what potential there is to make the money back and then pay back the amount borrowed, etc.
Sounds like some of these people should first borrow a few thousands, seek financial advice and then only search for a larger amount?

He wanted cash up front to the amount of R9800.00 +- for a R300,000.00 loan because I did not have a house in his area of America. Now, me, as a South-African will obviously not have a house in America. This amount was to serve as security, no correct me if I am wrong but isn’t security suppose to be more in value than the actual loan?

I was also told I will get my collateral money back and yip, me trusting this person, I did not get my loan. So people, there is no gaurantee that these are legit money lenders including Hopkins and Gideon…..

Guys go to the banks such as African Bank & Capitec they will look at you even if you are blacklisted, please save your hard earn money DO NOT PAY UPFRONT FEES!!!! You WILL lose it, NO reputable bank will ask upfront fees, why would they? If you are in dire straits and need a loan, you do not have the cash to pay fees; therefore they won’t ask fees upfront? Does it make sense?
I work with a lot of international bankers and come into contact with these scammers regularly, some of them will even give you an attorney’s undertaking that the “loan” funds are with the attorney and will be released to you upon payment of a fee. Take that “fee” take a holiday and fly to the UK / USA or wherever the so called attorney’s “head office” is and go look at his offices, if you’re lucky you’ll find an empty building due for demolition…

I’m been receiving emails everytime someone is in desperate need of money and am amazed that one thinks that money will come easy. I had put alot of my own money into a building venture that required further finance to complete. Being self employed I found it extremely difficult as the banks were not interested.
I emailed and applied to so many places and websites that I cannot remember the exact number. I was also very fortunate in that the only debt I had was a small home loan that I had to service. But when you have to service rent, levies, rates, med aid, insurance and life polices etc your monthly expenses can become a problem. Remember in these trying times you cannot give up important things like med aid, strangely enough I had to have a knee op, cost R35k which was fully paid for. I own 2 cars and have quite alot of assets, which was bought only after I saved for them, NEVER on terms.
So when I fell into the trap I also became desperate but remembered that I was always level headed and friends often asked me for advice. I decided to turn to these friends and family and got advice from them as to what I should do. After listening to them I went away and put a plan in place.
I put the building on sale and the 1st person to see it loved it and made me an offer. The sale has gone through, and although I didn’t make a profit I almost got everything back that I put in. I must add that if I didn’t sell it I could have lost everything. I was lucky but you can be too.
PLEASE REMEMBER that money doesn’t come easy, DEBT DOES. There are so many doggy characters out there waiting to eat on you desperation. Don’t do it.

@Tanya – Do you have a signed contract from the client? If so, just take that to the bank as it’ll guarentee things, or, if it’s 50% payment upfront, why not use that to purchase the materials?
@Chris. Yes I have a signed Letter of appointment as well as a contract. I have been to several baking institutions without success. The thing is they require at least a full years financials (which i cannot supply) as my business is only been operational since May this year. I do have a letter from my accountant which states my basic income but that document is not enough to convince the banks. I do not get a 50% upfront. I get a 50% on delivery (when i deliver the materials on site). If i got 50% upfront i would use that for the materials but seeing that I only get that when I deliver I have a problem financing everything. I actually need bridging finance, as i will be able to pay back the loan in 2 equal installments. 1st half on delivery of goods and 2nd half on final payment of invoice!!

Tanya, go to Merchant Factors in CT (0214665244), they might discount your invoice (if you invoiced the client already,they might do the same on a contract), usually 85% of the invoice is factored by them and then the balance covers the fees etc charged – you won’t “loose” the full 15%,you’ll get somebackupon payment by your client. Try them it might be something to look at?…

Hi all. Have anyone of you thought about starting something to help people like you and me who are in debt to help themself. Something like a stokvel for people in debt. You contribute a specified amount every month and try to get funds and donations. We then use these funds to start paying off people’s debts. The more people are involved the more we can raise and the more people we can help. Each month all the money that has been raised will go for paying out peoples debts. You don’t give the person the money, they have to send you settlement letters from the creditors. It will be a first come first serve concept, so if you join first you will be assist first. We start with smaller debts and no vehicle and bonds.
And I know what you are thinking, what if they do not pay anymore after their debts has been paid. If indeed they do continue to pay, there will be a great benefit for them. If things go well we can use a portion of the money to lend out to people with no interest. Just think, if this can really work we can start working on having a debt free South Africa!!!! I have been scammed 18 times in the past 8 months and I lost R29 000.00 to date. I am so angry with these guys for preying on desperate people, that is why I am convinced there is no such thing as an International Loan. This is an Income stream for these desperate people. Payments via Moneygram and Western Union is high risk because the minute the MCTN NO or Moneygram reference number is given to the person receiving it is lost. Ask for documentation on the Letterhead of the company and see how difficult that is for him to furnish. STOP SCAM we will find a legitimate lender.

Experience and Suspicion tells me that Clara Duke and Linda Financial Solution might be the same person. I have been referred to 2 lenders in this way and lo and behold once the fee was paid, I heard nothing from either.

I actually am busy with two of these so called loan institutions to try and ascertain if this is indeed the same company.
If any of the forums people have come across a Mr. Morris Walker as well as Mrs. Fantasia Cole and I would suspect Linda Financial Solution I am almost certain that this is the same company, simply by the qualifying criteria that gets sent to the client as well as the terms and conditions upon qualifying for the loan.
I should know I got the very same wording from both these companies and now Linda Financial Solution or Loans or whatever is not very far off my list…

On a side note, you’d imagine a spammer to at least create profiles that look reputable.

Are there really people or places that help one in financial need even if you have no security and are blacklisted? Preferably places where you dont have to pay a fee up front?

About 95% of the people wanting to give you a loan on this site are scam artists. Please use your common sense – never pay any fees towards “admin fees” when somebody offers you a loan. Try the next, tell the person that offers the loan to you to add the admin fees to your loan or maybe how about deducting the fees of the original amount you wanted to loan, see if they come back to you. Another give away is the spelling in these notes. Somebody has to take control of this blog, or maybe close it – ’cause alot of people are going to loose alot of money! Humble idea …..

One of them wanted to know if I was retarded when I said that I wouldn’t pay a fee through western union! I have mails if you are curious if they are the same people you’ve bumped into.
I would like to point out that if you ever bump into someone with any of these names, they aren’t automatically scammers. Usually the scammers steal someones name or identity aswell.

A good help in dealing with some of these scammers was John at interfraud.org.I mailed him the headers of the mail and he answered me right back on my question if it was a fraud or not. In addition he reported the addresses I gave him so that they would be closed down.
Summary: I haven’t bumped into one single sincere and honest person when it comes to lending….but it gave me a great pleasure to send them fake payment details when I told them I had paid their required fees;)

I do not like applying for a loan that has upfront payment but it seems that you can not get a loan without advance fee is paid though, i just said to my self me take a risk and i saw this email address on the a gumtree site and i decided to give a try and before they proceed, they made me to understand that they have a fixed price that all thier clients do pay as an upfront fee and no more fee after the first payment. I taught they will defraud me but today i am happy. They have an up front fee payment that cost $210 or 210euro even pounds all you have to pay is just 210 regarding the currency you need. If they charge you more that this amount then quit, because they made me to understand that this is their fixed advance payment when i decline that i will not pay a fee.

I did some background checks on Agent Lucas Mark and noticed that his email address comes up a number of times in reference to the so-called “419″ scam (aka “Nigeria scam” or “West African” scam). The 419 scam is a type of fraud named after the article of the Nigerian criminal code under which it is prosecuted.
Typically, victims of this scam are promised a portion of a large sum of money sitting in a bank account or in a deposit box at a security company, simply for providing a bank account to transfer the money into or for posing as a relative of a deceased person. Another very common variant promises a lottery prize from an internet lottery.
If recipients fall for the scam they are made to part with thousands and sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars in “bribes” for local officials, prepayments for courier services or deposits for accounts at (fake) banks before the “partners” disappear without trace. Read more about this type of scam here.
My guess is that Agent Lucas Mark is interested in hearing bad stories via email, so he can then say that he has been scammed too and would like to help you, gains your trust and then scams you – shocking. Just my opinion, which could be wrong, but I doubt it.

I’ve read the tales of woe and must ask everyone in need of a loan to understand the following.
1. Anyone offering international loans but has a gmail or yahoo email account is not legit. Their first names are often surnames (the Nigerian scamsters still haven’t worked this out). Their websites are usually dodgy looking. http://www.fnb.co.za looks legit (and is). http://www.loanbridgingfinance.MB122.cn doesn’t (and isn’t). If they ask for money upfront, they are not legit. Don’t even waste your time. Rather go to a loan shark with the threat of broken knees than thrown money at the scamsters.
2. Try consolidate debt with the bank. Take out a loan or overdraft and negotiate a better rate than you are currently getting and pay it off that way.
3. Cut up all clothing and other store account cards. Buy what you need, not what you want.
4. Consider downsizing cars, property, etc.
5. Negotiate with your creditors. When you hide from them, it only gets worse. Try to negotiate longer repayment periods at a lessor amount.
6. Don’t get into more debt for no reason. Rather cut out the DSTV, eating out, etc than losing your home.
7. When you’re back on your feet (or sooner) get health and short term insurance. The most expensive insurance is te type you DON’T have.
Just trying to help here.
And again, don’t use these scamsters. You WILL lose.

This article was written on the 17.10.2008, however, I only took ownership of the domain in 2010 – Due to the sheer number of comments acquired from this post, I kept my eyes on angelmoola and one day I noticed the domain was available, so I grabbed it. It wasn’t long after this that angelmoola contacted me and for legal reasons I had to hand the domain back over to them, hence the transfer onto another account.

Good day, I have just recently lost my husband. I am due a court payout in August. I am battling to get bridging finance for the next 4 months. I have taken out small loans but I need a good amount that I can pay back on the day I get my pay out with interest. Please will you help me. I am asking for R100 – R150000.
