At the beginning of the week, I heard about BreadLine, a charity raising money in various ways to feed underprivileged people. What caught my eye was the phrase “Blogger Bake Off”, this immediately got me reading.
After reading about the initiative, I spent some time brain storming various innovative ways that I could donate some money, raise some money and create lots of awareness.
My idea was simple, I would contact the owner of Muti and ask him if I could submit a post, stating that I would donate money if the public voted up the post – look here.
After releasing my donation article, it was submitted to muti and after 24 hours, the number of votes reached around 60 already! Because of this, the public started talking about it on Twitter, Instant Messengers and a number of blogs and literally an hour or two later, the 100 mark was reached!
The amazing part about social media and this campaign is the reach, based on the campaign receiving, what is totally 114 votes now, is probably around several thousand people becoming aware. Of these several thousand people, were other bloggers who decided to blog about it and the best part, also donate R200.00 if it reached 100 votes!
By the end of the day, another 8 people had taken onto the idea and had committed to also donate R200.00, which means the campaign had raised R1800,00 or so. Some of the donators, also said they would donate over and above, one person said he’d donate R10.00 for every vote over 100 and another person stated a donation for over 150 votes.
It’s incredible to see social media being used in such a manner, thanks to the local bloggisphere and social media, many starving children will be fed!
Thank you to everyone who was involved, you have my utmost respect and praises!
Apart from this, working closely with a campaign of this nature has taught me a lot and has actually changed the way I have been doing some things. In light of this, I have decided that I would go a month without eating take-aways, as they’re over priced and many people could be fed for one order! I have also spent a lot of time looking into various other campaigns, which are raising money and am going to try and tackle another one in the near future.
Keep posted my friends.
