R399 for uncapped ADSL

Screamer Telecoms have entered the uncapped ADSL scene with some amazing prices:

  • 384kbs – R399
  • 512kbs – R799
  • 1mb – R1499
  • 4mb – R2499

The finer details are as follows:

  • No caps or thresholds
  • No time restrictions or office-hours throttling (Wooohooo!)
  • Fibre based international bandwidth means lower latency
  • Fixed monthly cost for unlimited bandwidth
  • No set up costs
  • Flexible month-to-month contracts

Now that’s what I like to hear! Far better than DigiChilli’s uncapped ADSL for R500 per month!

And if you’re not interested in uncapped, then grab GB’s for just R23!!! Unfortunately you need to buy in bundles, so the smallest bundle you can buy is 5GB for just R115 – that’s still a steal!

Oh how I love the ADSL battles taking place in South Africa!

Looks like it’s turning out to be a ripoff – unhappy people on MyBB

  2. Woohoo, competition FTW!!!

Ye bro, I rate give it a few more months and we’ll really see some amazing developments – it’s high time that we all had uncapped Internet for decent prices. I’d pay R399 per month for uncapped, but 4mb/8mb, not 384kbs..

  4. Arné says:

very interesting, I’ll still go for the uncapped on the lower service speeds to test them out first, and move up when feeling comfortable with them, as I see on myBB the bandwidth quality looks abit shaky at the moment by looking at the comments on the forum. (at least it’s month-to-month contract)

    Good find Chris.

Agree, I was thinking of signing up for 1 month on their 384kbs package, just to see how it goes. I am normally messing about online, blogging and so forth, which doesn’t require huge speeds or even throttling for that matter, so it might actually be an ideal package for me. Downloading I guess wouldn’t be great, we’d be looking at say 20kbs down?

    Hi Chris

This is good news for Internet users, Im also hoping that it brings on more competition in the ADSL market in 2010. Im currently in Thailand and hope on my return to SA next year there will be some great ADSL packages available for me to take on. let us all hold thumbs :)

  7. Chris M says:

@Wayne – It’ll definitely bring about more competition, absolutely loving it! Every few days we hear about a new competitor in the scene, by next year I’m praying that we’ll finally have uncapped for prices that are fair. Unfortunately, today, I heard from several sources that the Screamer accounts are not very good at all :( None-the-less, let’s keep holding thumbs!!!

Look at these guys as well:

I phoned Screamer to find out more and still waiting for them to get back to me. In the meantime I also read up on them on MyBroadBand and it seems sketchy. I will wait it out to see who else comes up with decent offers.

  9. Chris M says:

Hey @Griff, ye I covered DigiChilli in a few posts back :)

Please let me know what Screamer come back to you with – I also read about the complaints and unimpressed users :/

Saw this consumer feedback from Dhiren today.

  11. Chris M says:

    Good grief, 3kb/sec!!!!

That’s slower than my 28k modem back in the day and more expensive than the R7 callmore special we all used!

  12. griff says:

Chris, we need someone to get 100% technical on their press release as it seems that they are not “really” selling Seacom bandwidth but rather ISDN of some sorts. Maybe get in contact with Seacom themselves or Stii and the guys from Afrigator.

I think it is important that people pay for the real deal. Otherwise it will be like buying a Siemens S4 Comfort back in ’94. It does the job, but you need a Venter trailer to haul the damn thing around.

  13. Chris M says:

@griff – I agree completely. A large number of people are going to fall for these offers and end up thinking they have the best solution, when they’re actually being ripped off. I heard the Screamer adverts on 5FM this morning and just shook my head in dismay!

  14. John says:

My parents have subscribed to Screamer and we’ll be getting our account info next week.

We’ve got the unlimited 384kbs package.

I’ll let you know how good their service is and what the download and upload speeds are.

  15. Chris M says:

    @John – I’d really appreciate that mate! :)

  16. John says:

We got our username and password today, a bit early.

    Results:
Direct file download: 7 KB/sec Top
    Torrent Download: 1.2 KB/sec Top

When I called them they said they are working on the problem and said it’s slower because they are getting like 200 customers a day.

That’s their problem, I must get what I pay for! If this doesn’t improve then I’ll cancel the subscription immediately.

Oh, their call center service sucks as well!

I don’t suggest them at all!

  17. Chris M says:

@John – That’s unfortunate, sorry to hear that!!! Terrible speeds, and you’re right, it’s their problem, not yours, tough luck if they’re getting 200 customers a day.

    I’ve put another post up – http://imod.co.za/index.php/2009/11/20/adsl-specials-and-competitions-in-south-africa/

  18. If you want higher torrent speeds, make sure you encrypt your torrent traffic, or they will throttle it.

  19. heinrich says:

did any of you guys tested it out or not pls let me nou thx
    heinrich

  20. Chris M says:

Heinrich, to be honest, I stick to Openweb, Axxess and Telkom, I never have problems with these guys, all the other services seen to give problems..

  21. I signed up for the 399.00 uncapped ADSl. and must tell you it is utter Crap. The download speed sita at around 7kb/sec and if you are running 2 PC’s off the same connection you keep on getting time out pages. Screamer also goes down for periods at a time and the response is that they are upgrading.
I would not recommend this at all
