As far as I know Twitter itself was not hacked but the DNS records for twitter.com was changed and you got redirected to somewhere else when you visited twitter.com.
Reason why 3rd party apps keep on working without any problems.
I read that too Marius, seems it was just the DNS, although I know a number of people who couldn’t use 3rd party applications..
