It could do with another 1GB of ram for like an extra 250bucks, coz face it… W7 hogs RAM

  2. Craig McLeod says:

Wow thats a very decent spec, upgrade to ultimate x64 edition chuck in 3gb of ram and it would be a very decent work horse, and the 3200 chipset even does GPU acceleration for Adobe PS cs4 and after FX, with decent Pixel shader support. Thats a really good deal.

  3. Chris M says:

    @Cameron – I concur.

@Craig – Agreed, it’s a great PC and your suggestion around upgrades is tight!

  4. Tibor says:

Nice machine, but I have to ask about issues relating to overheating with the AMD CPU’s?

Several of my clients lost their beloved HP Compaq NX AMD laptops due to fried CPU’s, and I wonder if AMD now does a better job of managing heat than before…?

I also always try and encourage clients to always spend that little bit extra, for (as Cameron pointed out) extra RAM and HDD space, and possibly a quicker CPU.
Too many times have people been caught out by an over-eager Incredible Connection salesperson who sells them a sub 2.0 GHz machine with 1GB RAM, running Windows 7.
Come 6 months, the client then wants to know why their machine is so slooooooooooooooooow…
    :)

  5. Craig McLeod says:

You will find over heating occurs when people use their latoptops in bed on blankets (blocking the vents) I have the NX 5000.

Simply enabling the fan to run in both modes, and not being silly when using your laptop you will never have a problem my laptop is ten years old and works just as well as when I bought it, and its been through lots including data tracking in a stunt plane.

AMD chips also can handle far greater heat than their intel counter parts.

So remember when your not using your laptop on a desk, put a tray or any flat solid item like a magazine beneath it to ensure that it breaths properly.

90% of the burnt out laptops I have seen are from people watching movies or series in bed, or working late on blankets.

In normal operation there would never be a problem.

Ive got the Compaq 610 – C2D 2.0, 4gb ram, 300gb hdd and came with Windows 7. Brilliant laptop i have to say, runs like a charm.

  7. Craig McLeod says:

Yeah the 4GB tells me you are running athe x64 edition, which means technically every kernal request is using a full 64 bits of input to the cpu, it basically means your getting about 40% more bang per millionth of a second than your counterparts running the 32bit edition.

Even with a 1gb of ram on the Baby Atom based netbooks Win 7 benches faster than xp (although the graphics card on the netbook is a woeful piece of sh1t

Darn it Chris, you have me at the edge of buying this laptop its a great deal, (and this time god willing my GF will not appropriate my third laptop tend seconds after I get it) ;)

  8. Chris M says:

Hehe, I’m running an Acer TravelMate 5720, which I got about 1.5yrs ago and I’ve had ZERO problems with it..

Craig – Ye, for this price it’s actually a steal, hardware costs are so low atm, it’s amazing!

  9. phil the hardware handyman says:

i personally have one gig of ram at home and am running windows 7 ultimate with no hassles. its a really efficient OS, that being said this machine is ideal for a basic user with the 1 gig. an extra gig or two of ram would make it super efficient. have sold many of this series in the last couple of months and have people raving about it, got a client who is a flash developer who is using his to compile his code. he is a huge mac fan and says that his HP amd notebook is the tits! loves it, absolutely loves it!

  10. Darryl says:

If you have overheating issues, or like to use your notebook in bed, you might want to consider getting a notebook cooler/stand. They are relatively inexpensive.

  11. Chris M says:

@Darryl – Yup, you’re right on that one; I actually use one at work always :) How’s Cafe Java these days? I haven’t been in for a while, but know we’re coming in to purchase a monitor, same RAM and a few other bits and pieces. No offense Phil, this one was out of my hands mate!

Got something to say? Go for it!
