It’s less than 50 days until the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and things are heating up. South Africans and football fans around the world are gearing up for the World Cup and it’s clear that development houses and sporting institues are looking at ways to market themselves along side the World Cup. With mobile devices being the hot thing of the century, naturally there are World Cup applications popping up all around the place.
ESPN have launched a World Cup iPhone application, which appears to be the best World Cup application developed thus far. Here are some of the things that the application will provide you with:
- Live count down clock until the World Cup
- You can select your favourite countries, which will appear on the applications Home Page
- News, Fixtures, Schedules, Venues and a few other things are also available at the push of a button
- There’s a headline news ticker with breaking headlines and details about upcoming matches
There’s a ton of other things that you can do with it, so if you’re a football fan and you want to stay locked into what’s happening during the 2010 World Cup, then this application is for you! Best part, it’s a free application!

Click here to grab it from the App Store (Regretfully US app store only).
I loaded up the App Store on my iPhone and did a search for “World Cup” and there are a handful of applications for South Africans. I’ve downloaded one and am busy having a look at it. Here’s a quick screen shot of what the Interface looks like:

Time to play around :)

There are a couple of really cool World cup iPhone apps out there. Check out My South Africa essentials as well. I also did a while write up on memeburn bout world cup apps – http://memeburn.com/2010/04/world-cup-iphone-apps-the-hot-and-not/
After comparing some Worldcup apps, I decided to get an app called “SouthAfrica-Fan” which really seems to have everything, including YouTube videos and push notifications. I totally recommend it.
@David, can you tell us a little more about it please?
Sure, I downloaded it since I saw its very popular in stores like France, Italy, Mexico and Japan. It’s a little pricey (3usd), but it gives you things like forecasts, countdown, teams, standings, players profiles, stadiums, referees and other stuff. It misses video streaming, but at least it has YouTube videos and alerts. I think it’s cool. However, if you are not such a soccer enthusiast the free espn app is quite complete.
Sounds quite good, but I think there are free ones which do similiar?
Yes. I believe the official one has almost everything. I believe the only differences are the youtube videos, the players profiles and the push notifications. I think there’s a free version of this one, but I don’t really know the difference. Thanks again! Have a good day.
I’ll take a peak around and see what else I can find :)
Have a good day too!
Check this video about another world cup iphone app, best predictor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7a8lZtLs4Q looks nice. kind of a prediction game
Pretty cool Mike, what’s the applications cost?
