I am so over the moon, after a lot of searching, I’ve finally found a really decent fishing spot that’s not far from Cape Town at all. La Ferme is situationed in Franschhoek, about 45minutes outside Cape Town – not only does La Ferme boast 4 dams, it also has some fantastic accommodation.
All 4 dams have rainbow trout, 2 of the dams have bass, so if you’re a fly fisherman, then you’ve got 4 to try in, if you’re into spinning for bass, then you’ve got two. Fe and I went through today and spent a good 4 hours fishing, unfortunately we arrived quite late in the day and dispite seeing a number of trout, we weren’t lucky enough to land one. I can tell you that a few were caught by others whilst we were fishing, so they definitely bite.
The 4 dams are incredibly well looked after, the water couldn’t get any clearer to be honest, and the grounds are spotless too. The cottages are definitely worth considering and next time I go, I’ll be staying there, no doubt about it. Gemsbok and Ostrich roam the grounds giving it a true outdoors feeling, and the snow on the mountain tops was a treat.
If you’re a keen fisherman, this is definitely a place to pop into. It’s R100 per person fishing and R50 per person just visiting, so remember to take cash with you :)
You can read about everything on their website. On of the most impressive things for me was sending a text message through to the number provided on their website and receiving a response within 5 mins – I wish more companies would operate like that.
Here are some pics from today:

is the fishing catch and release or can we take the fish home?
do we need license to fish here?
Hi @eko, when I was there, there was a gentleman who caught a few fish and was allowed to take them home at a fee. You do not need a license to fish there, it’s a private farm..
The fishing is on a catch and release basis. Very strict on how you release the fish. The hooks must be barbless and the hook must be removed in the water and the fish released with as little trauma as possible. No milking of fish to chum the water permitted. If fish are injured they must be taken or if they are foul hooked. Send me your logo and I’ll add you on as a recipricol link if you are interested. Thanks again Chris. Mercedes.
Thanks for popping in and clearing that matter up Mercedes. I’m hoping to come fish on Saturday, praying that the weather will be decent :)
Hi Chris, the weather will be clear all weekend, but chilly, remember Franschhoek is also hosting the Bastille Weekend, so if you get too cold you can always go and grab a glass of wine and food. Cheers.
I like eating the fish raw, with wasabi and soya at the dam, will bring own knife and batton to kill them with.
How mutch per kilo?
Awful.
Give them to me raw and wriggeling. With soya and wasabi. O they are so tasty. Don’t you like sushi?
Fresh out of the dam sushi!
