The iPhone 4 has been released in South Africa and already everyone is scrambling around to find out prices and where they can get one from, so I did a little research and sent a few emails and received a list of prices from Cellucity.

Hi Chris
Thanks for the prices… interesting that the cash-price is suspiciously missing. And from the looks of things, they’re not going to change their tactics on pricing…
I see the APPLE iPHONE 4 16G @ R4349.00 cash pay in if you take out a contract on Everyday 120. Obviously the price for a contract-free phone is going to be significantly higher.
Very disappointing indeed.
Ye mate, seems like there are no cash options yet, just like last time :S
Hi Tony
The prices I was given for a cashprice on the Iphone 4 from Altech Autopage is R5499.00 -16G and R6500.00 – 32G. prices ex. V.A.T
If this is the senario, do you guys now of a place to buy the iPhone 3Gs since my upgrade is only due in Dec and I might as well get on the bus with a iPhone 3, but the price on the local web is definately steep considering to pay in more in coming Dec.
@Pieter – I’ve got the 3GS and the 4, I can tell you that they are very similiar, the only things I’ve noticed are:
1. Retina display, it’s easier on the eyes, but not in a big way
2. Swipping is smoother
3. Apps run a bit fater
So all in all, I wouldn’t tell you to wait because the 4 is sooo much better..
Hi Chris, Can I ask how you(or anyone) got your iphone 4 without starting a new contract. I ask this because when I went to vodacom to try and get mine they said I couldn’t keep my old sim number because of the micro sim that is required on the iphone 4. They also told me that upgrading is not an option and if anyone wants an iPhone 4 through vodacom their gonna have to start a 24 month contract. Does MTN offer a sweeter deal or are their other means of getting your hands on an iphone 4.
Can anyone advise if a new phone purchased in the USA will work in South Africa ?
What do you need to do in order to get this to work if possible ?
Hi Dale
I’m not sure if it’s possible, but I can suggest asking the guys at icustom.co.za if they can help you out. I had my iPhone 2G hacked from them when I imported it from the USA.
Ye, iPhone coming from the US will need to be jailbroken, try as Tony said or you could try ahmede@yebo.co.za who’s based in Cape Town and does unlocking..
@Melcom – A friend picked it up for me whilst he was over in the UK..
Chris, where’s mine?
;-)
@Tony.
About your first post, Apple doesn’t come cheap in SA.
Also the iPhone 4 is one of the best cellphones in the world with it’s cutting edge technology and it’s powerful iOS 4.
I’d also like to see it for much cheaper but that’s SA.
BTW if you shop around a bit you can get a 16gb @ R8500 cash that is.
@Kosta T.
If you can get the iPhone 4 at that price in SA then it’s a winner. Maybe provide some sort of link to a quote from them?
I’m a bit shocked to hear that Vodacom was sold out before they let their customers know it was released.
Hopefully MTN still have stock, maybe convert to them as they offer it at cheaper prices as well.
@Chris.
I’m not sure as I haven’t tested one yet, but as far as announcements go, Apple haven’t put a lock on the iPhone 4.
The only requirement is that you need a micro-SIM to activate the product on iTunes before you can use it. As for SA, you can easily cut your normal SIM to micro-SIM size.
To conclusion, the iPhone 4 is really a nice to have if you have that much money to spend on something you could buy yourself a decent netbook. Yet again, it’s Apple and it is sure to be a killer of a phone is SA.
I’d like to hear more from you guys.
Does anyone know of an Autopage store where I can have my Autopage Vodacom SIM swapped for a micro SIM?
@Schalk – I went to the one at Century City, but they pointed me across the way to the Cellucity, they can do it there quite easily and if they don’t have micro-sims, you can go to the Vodacom 3G/Data store, I bought one there 3 or 4 days ago and did a sim swap with them..
@Schalk.
There is a DIY option to cut your SIM to micro-SIM size.
The reason I’m suggesting this is if you do a SIM swop your normal SIM can’t be used anyway unless you swop it back again, so save yourself money and trouble and follow the following link. It’s safe and easy.
You do however get a micro-SIM free in-store if you upgrade to the iPhone 4.
http://www.techradar.com/news/computing/apple/how-to-make-your-own-ipad-or-iphone-4-micro-sim-681020
Just follow the images. If you really don’t want to DIY you can just contact an Autopage store, they’ll be glad to help you out.
@Samuel.
I thought that it was too good to be true, that quote was from Autopage cellular H.Q in Midrand, when I phoned back with an order of 10 phones they informed me that that was their price (the customer care guy mistakenly gave me the price that they actually pay for the phones) and that they were no longer allowed to sell the phones cash as they will not have enough for the contact buyers.
@Melcom i had my sister pick up the 32G phone from the U.K at the beginning of last month for 599 GBP and all I can say is that it is AWSOME! regarding the micro sim crap that you were told it is all rubbish!!! I managed to pick up a micro sim from Autopage HQ (because I have a contract with them and because its Autopage and they are more full of crap than others)a whole month before they launched the Iphone4 here all I needed to do was a simple sim swop and it was for free and I still have my old number, I was also informed that any vodashop will do it for normal Vodacom subscribers.
By the way my contact expires at the end of next month and I am thinking of migrating -signing up with Cell C as they will be the only guys that will be offering a data connection that is closest to what this phone was designed for, has any one got any advise on this?
Hey Chris
I am currently in Uk coming back to Ct on Friday and i have just bought an iPhone4, will the phone be blocked?
I contacted MTN from here and they said i can do sim swap so no issues there bbut just wondering if i need to get it unblocked or not?
Ross
Hey @Ross, I got mine in the UK off eBay and it’s not working on MTN or Vodacom with cut cards and micro-sims, so I’m not quite sure what to tell you..
Hi Chris
I would like to a iPhone 3gs 32g,where can I get the cheapest prices?
I would like to buy a iPhone 3gs 32g,where can I get the cheapest prices?
Hey @ Ross, were did you buy your Iphone from , if it was at the Istore or apple store then you should not have a problem as long as the phone was unblocked, as I said my sister bought for me from an apple store and it was unblocked as it works perfectly over here – how much did you pay for it?, if you bought it from O2 or any other network service provider they usually subsidise the phone when you take out a contract with them and therefore the phones are network blocked i.e. they will not work with any other sim card than the one they came with unless you get them jailbroken.
@Chris M does the phone you bought from ebay need to be jailbroken perhaps?
hey@ Kasta T
I bougfht it through my Mom company and they use O2 so it was cheaper, i got the 32G for £460 inclusive.
it works perfectly with a Tesco prepaid sim in it even over here in CT, I have cut my MTN sim so it fits perfectly and it reads ‘invalid sim’
once it is inserted so i presume it will need to be jailbroken.
I have a quote for this, what is the normal price to get a phone jailbroken, he wants to charge R500-R800 to get it done.
let me know guys thanks, any help will be great as i really wanna start using this phone!!!
Hi Chris
Just wondering if any more has come of you getting your iPhone 4 to work on vodacom or mtn? I’m moving back to SA in December, and I’d just like to know if I’ll be able to use it when I’m there! Can you not just use a standard mtn sim with a data bundle each month?
@Matthew – Unfortunately not mate, I have a recent version of iOS running on it and a crack won’t be available for quite some time :(
I do have a contact for jailbreaking iPhones though and it’s reliable and Cape Town based!
hey guys, Ive been wanting an iphone 4 ever since it was released in the U.S. Now that it is here I wanna buy it cash because im a student and dont want to take out a contract. Im concerned about the micro sim thing. can a normal sim fit in the iphone 4 if not is it possible to get a micro sim at vodacom? pls help
@Chris
Hey again Chris, thanks for that info..I’ve been out of the country for over a year, so excuse me for being a bit slow – but MTN has iPhone 4 deals available for only like R479pm. So even though this is the case, prepaid MTN sims won’t work in a separately purchased phone? :(
@Marcio – What you do is a sim swap, so if you have a normal sim card, you take it in and they do a sim swap, if you don’t have a normal sim, you buy a normal sim, rica and activate it and then do a sim swap, it’s really not a big deal. The problem will come in when you try buy the device for cash, none of the providers are selling them outside contract.
@Matthew – If the device is jailbroken, you could use an MTN sim in it..
hey all
My iPhone 3 went into the washing machine on Monday (genuine) so I had to replace it. I bought the iPhone4 16GB from Autopage for R8500 on Tuesday without a contract. They sold me a micro sim and did a sim swap. All is up and running fine. NB remember to activate the phone on itunes first though – no-one tells you this when you buy the phone.
@Kesley – It always amazes me at the lack of information these service providers give their customers. R8,500 is a large amount of money, it warrants a good explanation! Welcome to the iPhone 4 team! :D
@ Ross, is Tescos part of O2?,or do they have their own network?, cutting the sim card does not always work, as there is a bit of a trick to cutting it exactley for the contacts to be perfectly aligned, do yourself a favour and get a microsim from MTN or Vodacom… you going to need one anyway in order to get the phone to work properly!.. regarding Jail breaking your phone I’d try to see if the sim card issue is the problem first before jail breaking your phone, I am a bit sceptical about this.(you are putting a virus onto your phone), and bear in mind that you would need to pay that every time that a new update is available for the phone!…… the price that you were quoted sounds about right asthats how much it costs up here in JHB
By the way has anyone used made a Face Time call, its AWSOME!!!!!
hey @Kosta
tesco has their own service provider but i think they link to other networks in the uk and for roaming.
i cut mu UK sim and it worked perfectly and i have also cut my SA MTN sim and it fits perfectly and the phone works like a dream!!!
the phone was locked onto trhe O2 network as this is how they subsidise the phone price in the UK, the only total unblocked ones are the phones bought from the iStore itself which is ridiculously expensive at 650GBP, if it is jailbroken then dont update to the new softwarew for a while until new codes are here and available.
facetime is the best app and it works great as does whatsapp across to BBm and nokia phones,
i ended up paying R200 to get the phone done.
how much is The iphone 4 cash in S.A
I was under the informed impression that you could only get an iPhone 4 if you took out a contract..
You can buy it from Incredible Connection for R8000.00 – saw it at V&A Waterfront store on Saturday.
Contract free, unlocked and all?
Yup. Free as a bird.
I wonder how they got around that! Would make for a good blog post I reckon?
Hi! All I’ve bought my iPhone 4, 32G in France officially unblocked, for R7000, at an Apple store.
Hi! I have an iphone 3g as my work phone, im taking out a contract and getting an iphone 4 as my personal phone, how ever i would like to have the iphone 4 as my work phone and 3 as my personal phone, how can i make the micro sim from new contract fit into my iphone 3g, and just to confirm i can sim swap my normal sim for a micro sim??? one last thing does a sim swap keep your numbers?
pls i’ll like to know how is the IPHONE 4 if i buy it cash and then use prepaid
@cristiano – hey, I’ve got a mate going to France next week and I’ve been trying to find out what the prices are, how I’ll know it will work here etc? did u get a 16/32gb for R7k? And what did u do to unlock it? thanks!!
You’ll need to find out if it’s locked to a network in France, that’s the first move..
Hey guys thanks for all the good info :) I just wanted to add that they also sell the iphone 4 at the airport (OR Tambo) in the vodacom stores and electronics stores(forgot the names) in the duty free area for R7999-8299 for the 16GB. Parents said I couldnt get one coz im 14 and its expensive, lol… But anyway,it seems like a really great phone!
Does anybody know who has stock on the Iphone 4 16g on contract??
@Cindy – Have you tried all the usual outlets?
Hi,
Yes I did, this was one of the last desperate resorts….
I don’t know whether to take that as an insult or not ;)
So, you want one on a contract? Ie. you’ll open a contract?
@Costa I would suggest that you do some Research before you give advice. Jailbreaking is NOT a virus that you put on your device. In essence, it is the reverse engineering of a device to add functionality. I have repaired and jailbroken more than 3000 devices in the past 5 years. I am the only person that repairs and jailbreaks them remotely world wide.
@Tony Thank you for the referral.
@ everybodyelse Feel free to contact me with any questions on jailbreaking, unlocking, hard and software repairs and customizing of all iDevices. I have a technician that repairs hardware at your home or office, while you wait, in the Capetown region.
@”Games” obviously you would defend Jailbreaking as you are making money off it from people who are non the wiser, anyone can download the jailbreak software for thier phones from the web and for free and not have to pay you for it!!! by the way Jailbreaking the phones also renders the warranty as usless!!!! . it is not the reverse engeneering as you so call it.it is in fact the hacking of the device and the installation of software that is not designed or endorsed by Apple for the handset so yes in “essence, it is a virus” !!!! , however tell the full story and let us know where you are obtaining your research? as the first iphone was released in 2007 so you being a self proclaimed “EXPERT” I fail to see how you managed to have repaired and Jailbroken so many devices in the past 5 YEARS….let see Jan 2007 – Dec 2010 is almost four years, did you skip a year to make your argument seem more feasable?
@James, further and to be exact the first iphone was only released on the 29th June 2007 in the states so in fact three years and five months ago… you also forget to mention that jailbreaking opens up all the phones security features that lets all sorts of worms (IKEE worm) in there too so anyone planning to use the device to do banking should also be very cautious…..just a bit more of useless information, use it or don’t use it your choice!
@Costa http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS_jailbreaking The definition of jailbreaking:”Jailbreaking[1] is a process that allows iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch users to gain root access to the command line of the operating system thus removing any limitations imposed upon them by Apple. Once jailbroken,[1] iPhone users are able to download many extensions and themes previously unavailable through the App Store via installers such as Cydia and generally exercise complete ownership of their purchased product including installing non Apple operating systems such as Linux.[2] A jailbroken iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch running iOS is still able to use the App Store, iTunes and other other normal functions such as calling.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_virus The definition of a virus:”A computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself[1] and infect a computer. The term “virus” is also commonly but erroneously used to refer to other types of malware, including but not limited to adware and spyware programs that do not have the reproductive ability. A true virus can spread from one computer to another (in some form of executable code) when its host is taken to the target computer; for instance because a user sent it over a network or the Internet, or carried it on a removable medium such as a floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB drive.[2]”
I have been repairing idevices for 5 years. IPODS, iphones, ipads, itouch. I am not going to get into an argument with you. Do you research before pretending that you know what you dont.
@JAMES, learn to spell my name dude, there is nothing more rude than that….I spell your name correctly ….cutting and pasting few wiki urls. is not enough, how about posting the urls explaining the dangers of Jailbreaking and the viruses that accompany Jailbreaking e.g. http://www.interrupt19.com/2009/11/19/prevent-iphone-jailbreak-virus-protect-your-iphone/
The first iPhone / iPod Touch virus was cute, it rick-rolled unsuspecting victims. Now, that silly virus has been re-engineered into something sinister. The same trick that rick-rolled unsuspecting jailbreakers is being used to silently steal email messages, SMS messages, calendar data, contacts, music, photos, video and iPhone App data.
iPhone virus or spyware “80-90% likely”, says security expert http://apcmag.com/iphone_virus_or_spyware_8090_likely_says_security_expert.htm
http://ipod.about.com/od/introductiontotheiphone/f/get-an-iphone-virus.htm
Of the iPhone viruses that are “in the wild,” most only attack iPhones that have been jailbroken. So, as long as you haven’t unlocked your phone, your iPhone should be safe from viruses for now
http://www.ziphone.org/2009/11/is-your-jailbreak-iphone-safe-from-ikee.html
by the way what has repairing idevices for five years have to do with jealbreaking Iphones ??? in other words you repaired ipods…and this makes you an expert? oh ok
however you failed to reply to the fact that you charge for Jailbreaking phones therefore your comments on here are a little bias to say the least,or are you trying to justify your charges???
please stop using wikipedia for your research and expert references as the definitions on wiki can be updated by anyone.
I do not pretend to be an expert, unlike you, as I stated its just a bit of useless information use it, or don’t use it its all up to you!!!! and nowhere in my posts have I professed to be an expert or offer expert advise this is a blog dude stop trying to promote your business. by the way I have been a MAC, idevice user longer than 5 years.
@Costa I am not going to argue with you. iDevices = IPODS, iPhones, ipads, itouch. The first IPOD was released on October 23, 2001 (http://www.ipodhistory.com/ipod-first-generation/). I started repairing iPods about 5 years ago and stated that I have been working on more than 3000 idevices in the past 5 years.
Jailbreaking does not render the warrantee useless as you can restore the device back to its original state.
Here is my research as requested.
The definition of jailbreak:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS_jailbreaking
Jailbreaking[1] is a process that allows iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch users to gain root access to the command line of the operating system thus removing any limitations imposed upon them by Apple. Once jailbroken,[1] iPhone users are able to download many extensions and themes previously unavailable through the App Store via installers such as Cydia and generally exercise complete ownership of their purchased product including installing non Apple operating systems such as Linux.[2] A jailbroken iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch running iOS is still able to use the App Store, iTunes and other other normal functions such as calling
The definition of a virus:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_virus
A computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself[1] and infect a computer. The term “virus” is also commonly but erroneously used to refer to other types of malware, including but not limited to adware and spyware programs that do not have the reproductive ability. A true virus can spread from one computer to another (in some form of executable code) when its host is taken to the target computer; for instance because a user sent it over a network or the Internet, or carried it on a removable medium such as a floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB drive.[2]
You mention the IKEE worm. This worm can only access a iphone with shh installed on an unlocked 3g connection.(You need special permision from Vodacom and MTN for them to unlock all ports over 3g) with the root password set to the default:”Alpine”. People that use shh are command line literate. And anybody that can work with the command line KNOWS that you need to change the root password. Your mentioning of this worm further proves that you have not done your research, because you dont have a clue what it is or how it works.
Now on the topic of “self proclaimed expert”. If you have a major problem in South Africa with an iPhone that is out of warrantee, Apple and most vodacom stores refer you to me. I can do repairs on these devices that not Apple SA or Vodacom SA can do. If your device is still covered, they send it away to the Apple repair center in Holland.I am the only person WORLD WIDE, that markets the repairs of ANY iPhone,iPad,Itouch and iPod software problems remotely.
Any further questions?
@JAMES DUDE STOP BEING RUDE AND SPELL MY NAME RIGHT !!!!
by the way repairing ipods for 5 years does not make you a idevice expert, I have been a Mac, idevice user longer than 5 years, does that make me more of an authority?
nowhere in my postings have I ever declared to be an expert, unlike you with all that 5 years experience and all, dude wikipedia is hardly expert reference as anyone can update the definitions so it is not too reliable for research or expert reference unless you maybe are busy with a high school project!
…..seeing that you are making money from people that are non the wiser that they can jailbreak phones for free maybe you are trying to justify your charges??? by the way that makes you bias and hardly a reliable authority.
as this is a blog site stop trying to promote your business on here, your opinions are yours and mine are mine, if you dont want to get into an argument then stop undermining other people’s opinions mine is that Jailbreaking is a VIRUS!!!!!
@ everyone else here are a few other urls: use them don’t use them, however they warn you about dangers of jailbreaking iphones
http://ipod.about.com/od/introductiontotheiphone/f/get-an-iphone-virus.htm Of the iPhone viruses that are “in the wild,” most only attack iPhones that have been jailbroken. So, as long as you haven’t unlocked your phone, your iPhone should be safe from viruses for now
This one is a little more serious than Rick Rolling.
Zoom
About a month ago there was an iPhone worm that changed the user’s wallpaper to Rick Astley. The Australian student behind that little piece of malware said the software did nothing else and those affected by it could un-Rick their phone very easily. Ashley Towns said that his sole intention was to highlight how easy it is for attackers to gain access to your phone if you haven’t taken the proper steps to protect yourself.
Fast forward just a few weeks and we have a malicious iPhone worm that can steal data and even take control of the phone, acting like a botnet. Similar to the Rick Rolling worm, this virus also targets jailbroken iPhones with an SSH password that were never changed from the default to something more secure.
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/iphone-virus-botnet-bank-details,9136.html According to Symantec’s John McDonald, the virus can steal data contained on the iPhone as well as connect back to the attacker giving them control over the phone including the ability to download and install malware onto it. McDonald says the root password may also be changed in order to prevent the owner from accessing the device and adds that this worm appears to cover a broader range of IP addresses than the Rick Rolling worm. “The first iPhone worm, this one appears to cover a much broader range of IP addresses, including UPC in the Netherlands, Optus in Australia, possibly a Hungarian and a Portuguese provider, T-Mobile and potentially many others.”
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1563067/new-iphone-virus-loose ACCORDING TO insecurity firm F-Secure there is a new Iphone worm on the loose and this time it has a worse payload than a picture of 80s popstar Rick Astley and some poor spelling.
As with its predecessor, the Ikee worm, the virus only affects jailbroken Iphones and those users who have not changed their password from the default, that is, people who thought they were more technically minded than they actually are.
So far it’s only affecting a minority of users, but according to the firm is “much more serious than the first Iphone worm as it seems to try to steal information from the devices.”
F-Secure added that it had botnet functions that were connecting to a web-based command and control centre in Lithuania.

Hi…I just bought an iphone 4 here in Taiwan and I am moving to south africa in December. Would I be able to use my phone there with my vodacom prepaid sim?? And if not, where can I have one customized and how much?? Also, is it illegal to jailbreak my phone? I just think its a shame that we cant use the Bluetooth without jailbreaking the phone..Thank you to anyone that can help me!
@ Melanie, you should be able to use your iphone 4 here as long as you get a micro-sim from a vodashop or resize a vodacom prepaid sim card to fit your phone so long that the phone itself is not network blocked.
and NO it is not illegal to jailbreak your phone, there is no Apple police out there! you would need to if it is indeed network blocked in order to use it with a Vodacom or any other network sim card,…. I feel that there are risks to jailbreaking your phone, if it is not network blocked, however that is my opinion and the choice is yours, as you can see there are people offering such services on here, or you can even do it yourself if you search the web hard enough.
@Kosta – Are you sure it’s legal to jailbreak? I’m quite confident that you are correct though, I just wonder if there’s material to back it up, you know what I mean..
@ Chris – well I have yet to hear of anyone that has been arrested for a Jailbroken phone , and I have yet to see a law passed on this issue in South Africa – where Apple is not such a big influence in our economy, there was a court case in the States recently where it was found that it was not illegal to jailbreak your phone, if your intention is to use it on another network and your phone is network blocked.

@Chris sure thing

Section 1201(a)(1) of the copyright law requires that every three years I am to determine whether there are any classes of works that will be subject to exemptions from the statute’s prohibition against circumvention of technology that effectively controls access to a copyrighted work.
That’s awesome @Kosta – thank you for taking the time to find that link, appreciate it! Haha, ye, I haven’t heard of anyone being arrested for jailbreaking either :P
1) We are not in the US.
2) You can do whatever you want to your own iPhone. It belongs to you.
@James
Do you work with Mac’s too? I have a 3 year old Macbook that the roof leaked on and took it to Core. They wanted to charge me R7000 to replace some or other board and stated in the quote that the hard drive might also be damaged. Didn’t think it was worth spending R7000 to fix a 3 year old Mac.
Got and Apple iPhone4 brought over from the but now need a micro sim. Have an Altech Augopage contract with Vodacom. Can you please tell me where I can get a micro sim – I want to keep my same cell number. Ta
OMG!!! Just read my previous post!! I “sound” like a real idiot – my grammar and spelling is disgusting – I don’t know where my brain was when I was typing it out! Anyway, hopefully you got the gist of my question…?
@Ursula – You should be able to go into a Voda shop and do a sim swap (normal to micro) – this will allow you to preserve your number.
@Ursula, a micro sim is the same as a regular (mini)sim that you have now, just with less plastic.
You just need a pair of sharp scissors. Here’s how: http://www.techradar.com/news/computing/apple/how-to-make-your-own-ipad-or-iphone-4-micro-sim-681020
I cut my mini sim to fit my iPhone 4 and it worked, however, I would recommend going in and doing a sim swap unless you’re good at this sort of thing.
@Chris M, why?
Doing a sim swap renders the old sim useless anyway, so one might as well try. It’s not rocket science, just some scissor skill most of us learnt at school (hopefully) ;)
Sim swap also
a) costs money (R200 IIRC)
b) wastes time (you have to go into a Vodashop/Vodacare and sign all sorts of bull****)
c) wastes more time (RICA rubbish)
@Ursula, give it a go with the scissors. Just don’t cut through the gold contacts or the chip itself, it’s not that hard. If you mess up then you can always do the sim swap.
Hi there…
I was wondering about the iphone 3 16GB availability, because I put my name on the Mtn waiting list yesterday. Any idea how long the wait might be? Also, can anyone tell me if Mtn has the best offers for the iphone?
Thanks, I appreciate the help.
For sure Marko, I hear ya, however..
..not everybody is able to cut up a mini sim perfectly and I’d never advice doing it unless you have tried on a few spare sims. That’s all :)
@Lelani – No idea about the availability, I might suggest that you call MTN and Vodacom to do a price comparison.
Vodacom – http://help.vodacom.co.za/portal/engine?handler=script&script=template&view=html&context=template&name=main_contact_us&category=Phonebook&sub_category=Contact%20Centres&tab=contact_us
MTN – http://www.mtn.co.za/Support/Pages/ContactCustomerCare.aspx
Good luck!
@Chris, my point is, doing a sim swap means you have to throw your old sim away in any case so who cares if you botch trimming it.
@Lelani, I’m guessing you mean iPhone 4. Nobody, not even iStore seems to have a clue about when there will be more stock.
I ordered one from Vodacom more than a month ago and still waiting.
Micro Sims are available, I was at Century City a couple weeks ago and I picked a few up no problem.
@Marko – True, I hear what you’re saying, I’m just playing devils advocate and saying a lot of people aren’t capable of chopping up a micro, that’s all, I do agree with you :)
Hey Chris..
My question is a bit off mark from this particular blog…but thought I would give it a shot.
I am from the US..and may be traveling to SA this next year. I would love to use my iPhone there, but really don’t look forward to being raped by ATT. Is JailBreaking my phone my only option??
Any thoughts??
Thanks
@ Brian S – Is your phone networked blocked to AT&T at the moment?, if so you will have to jailbreak the phone if you want to use it with a South African Sim card and not get raped by the roaming charges from AT&T, try using a mates sim card that is not AT&T to verify if phone is network blocked before going ahead with jailbreaking it…. By the way you can always restore your phone when you get back to the States !
I recently got an iPhone 3G that is network blocked to AT&T but want to use my Vodacom sim card.
I would like to know which jailbreaking software to use – is redsnow my best option or what would you recommend?
I bought a ipone 4 in the uk at apple and it will work any where in the world.without been jailbreaked.
Where in Pretoria can I buy the iPhone 4 for cash?
I am selling my IPhone 4 /16G for R6000cash. JHB area. I only used it for a month.Good as new.
I’m coming to SA from USA in a week. Looking at switching in the next day or two to iPhone on ATT network. Any insighs on using it in SA? Can you swap a Sim? It will be under warranty, so, don’t think I want to ‘break’ it right out of the box. Will be there for a couple weeks, so, any insight appreciated.
Thanks!
L
PS would there be a reason to buy a couple extra and bring with….. ;-)
I just brought back a second iPhone4 back from UK and it is locked to O2 network on 10.2.1 version, do you know if anyone has the break codes for that version yet in CT please?
What is the firmware version and what is the baseband?
The important thing to remember here is that unocking your iPhone can mess it up and Apple doesn’t provide support for unlocked phones.
So, while unlocking or jailbreaking an iPhone may not technically void its warranty, don’t expect Apple to provide support to you if you install apps downloaded from somewhere other than the App Store or if you’re having connection problems with carriers other than the one you purchased your iPhone4 from.
If I bought an el-cheapo cellphone (less than R1000.00) I might wanna unlock it, if it dies who cares, but we all know a 16GB iPhone4 = R8000 / 32GB iPhone4 = R9000. That’s a lot of money to throw away.
Well, I’ve managed to unlock my iPhone 4 and it’s been 100% operational for a few weeks now using the latest iOS release :)
Hi Chris, what version was your iPhone4 on prior to unlocking it. What software did you use to unlock (jailbreak, cydia) ?
I had someone do it for me, it was updated to the latest version of iOS and was on baseband 02.10.05 or something to that effect.
Hie guys am looking thinking of buying a iphone to use in Zimbabwe, so is it best to buy it from S.A or U.K? Can anyone help me with the prices?
iOS 5 will be available for download on October 12. Here are the devices that can run iOS 5: iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad 1.
iPhone 4S (no iPhone 5 this year) will be available in US stores from 14 October 2011. I assume SA will get iPhone 4 somewhere in Nov/Dec. Now that iPhone 4 is to be replaced by iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 prices should drop considerably.
Can someone explain why one would need more than a 16G iphone 4s? please use short sentences and no jargon as I am an old fart born in the year that Sputnik circled the globe!
Hi Andre,
Let me see if I can assist you, please excuse me if I’m overly simple.
The G in the 16G refers to Gigabytes, this is a technical term for space/storage on a device. So, with this iPhone, the user gets 16 gigabytes of space/storage. A gigabyte is made up of 1024 megabytes (MB) and an average song is about 5MB – so you could store over 3000 songs on the device – if you had an 8GB device, you could store 1500 songs – that’s a lot, but as you can imagine, some people might want lots of CDs on their iPhone for what ever reason. Now, on top of this, each time you download an application to your iPhone, it requires some space. Some applications use very little space, but some use a lot – I recently downloaded a game that was 78MB, which is quite a lot, but I’d still be able to download hundreds of applications at that size and they’d happily fit on the 16G device. Another thing to consider is photographs, if you take thousands of photographs, then extra space would be useful, but you’d really need to take thousands to ever have a problem.
So, all in all, I highly doubt that someone would need more than 16GB, let alone 8GB – I got my iPhone 4 a week after it was released – It is has storage up to 29.1GB as as of now, almost a year later (I think), I have used 2.4GB and I’m on my phone constantly taking photographs, downloading applications and listening to music. So, if I had the 8GB iPhone, I would still have plenty of space left.
I hope that helps?
Hi i’m looking for an iphone 4s 16g for this month is it possibl?.I’m staying in Pretoria please let me know.

@Ana – Have you gone down to a cell shop to ask? This isn’t the place to ask for phones unfortunately..
