Yesterday I told you all about group buying and today I want to give you some examples of local, South African, group buying websites, perhaps you’ll come across a deal you can’t miss.
Here are three websites, amongst many, which offer group buying in South Africa:
Ubuntu Deal – This website was started by a friend of mine and I’ve watched it grow from day one and am impressed. What I like about the site most is that I know the owner is an honest person and that immediately makes me trust the site. The website works quite simply – each day new deals are added, deals ranging from vouchers to restaurants to specials at beauty spas to entertainment products, these products are all offered at a discounted rate of between 50% to 90%!
Collective Cow – Another website which focuses on collective buying, Collective Cow features a product a day that they’ve secured at a highly discounted rate. The website features all sorts of things, even a 20 minute kids pony ride has been offered!
One Day Only – Personally, this is one of my favourite group buying websites, purely because of its simplicity. Each day, a new product is showcased, a short description is given and there’s a big button to buy. It really is incredibly simple and takes a few minutes to sign up if you’re interested in buying the deal of the day.
If you love shopping online and you like saving money, it’s worth keeping track of these websites, you never know when something amazing will pop up with a 50% discount!

Hey Chris, First time I’ve seen CollectiveCow, not so
chuffed with Ubuntu Deals, as they don’t have a lot of deals in
Joburg though. Pity I missed the rel="nofollow">Christmas Gourmet Cupcakes, would have
made a nice present.
Arne, thanks for popping in, how are you?
I must admit, I’m not that engaged with the whole group buying thing at the moment, but as popularity and awareness increases, so will my interest. It’s hugely popular overseas, so I’m sure it’ll go the same way here, the hardest part for the company organizers will be sourcing great products and services that us Saffers jump towards.
All in all, I’m happy to see collective buying becoming more popular, it’s a complete for all of us consumers :)
@Arne – Yes, you’re right, and the whole team is working hard on that! CollectiveCow have no deals in Cape Town, though. ;)
@Chris – It’s about to get very big in SA – about 20 group buying companies now already.
@Jess – Indeed, I’m following closely and have insight into a few that are currently being built, one of them’s quite impressive, this space is definitely one worth watching, group buying is going to be BANG any day now in SA! Can’t wait, it only has good things for the consumers :)
WiCount is another one. You get discounts if they get enough people to buy into an item/service.
Give it another month or two and I reckon we’ll have a good 20-30 of them. For us as consumers, it’s a win situation, so I don’t mind if there are 1000 of them ;)
Hi Jess,
Is there a way to contact you? I would like to discuss some ideas, a proposition.
Chris, could you pass my email address onto Jess, or vice versa?
Thanks,
Marc
Hi @Marc – Absolutely, email sending now :)
Hi Chris
I think the idea of group buying is a fantastic idea and I myself used it all the time while living in London.
In saying this I feel I was burnt by the ubuntudeal (In particular the valentines bouquet) what I received was not what i was expecting at all just though i would share but don’t get me wrong i love the idea and will continue to use it, will just be more careful next time.
Thanks
Craig
Hey Craig – sorry to hear that, what went wrong?
Feel free to email us on deal@ubuntudeal.co.za or call us on 0861 UBUNTU anytime.
@Craig – Thank you for sharing your experience, I think it’s very important that consumers share their experiences, not only so other know, but also so that companies like Ubuntu Deal know. I know the owner of Ubuntu deal and I have no doubt that he won’t help you with this and put your mind at ease..
I’m sorry if I lead you into purchasing something that was not what you wanted, I feel responsible :(
Hi
No need to apologize for anything, Ubuntu’s service was great but the product i received was not at all what i expected i.e the flowers were dry and wilted nothing like the pictures displayed also they came in an old glass jar with half the old sticker still stuck on it i think it was a pickle jar of some sort also the free flower pot that you get was a 1.5inch by 1.5inch by 1.5inch plastic square pot no where near big enough to hold the flowers, in all honesty my girlfriend thought i was playing a joke on her it was pretty funny thank goodness my girlfriend knows me well and we could have a good laugh about it, could have been devastating had it been a girl i was trying to win over with flowers :)
@Craig – I only picked up on this now! Grief, I can see how that could have gone down really badly if it was for a girl you were turning to win over. Glad you could have a laugh about it at least :)
