That’s right folks, our Government has announced that the 27th of December will now be a public holiday. Acting President Kgalema Motlanthe has just announced this in terms of the Public Holiday Act. This comes shortly after the trade union federation FEDUSA called upon the government to approve this.
Pretty awesome to have another holiday at that time of the year, cool for me because I am taking forced leave, but now I’ll have another day off for a rainy day in 2012!
I wonder if this will have an impact on the economy, considering that this time of the year is normally incredibly busy for some industries.
Who’s stoked?

They’re just kissing ass after they got the whole country upset with the Secrecy Bill.
Yup, definitely plays a role in buying good faith, but I’m stoked none-the-less :)
According to http://www.info.gov.za/aboutsa/holidays.htm,
*** Tuesday, 27 December 2011 has not been declared a public holiday. The Public Holidays Act does not make provision for the public holiday to be moved on in the event of the Monday already being a public holiday.
So many articles I’ve read say the 27th is a public holiday. I’ll probably have to watch the news to find out.
What ‘good’ reason is there for this…????
I read that too Clem, not quite sure what the actual outcome is – they announced the information, but not the most important thing – argh!
Braam – Not having to work.
So stoked if it is declared a holiday! My tent is going to be getting some more action :)
Nice to get the day back since I’m on forced leave as well.
Don’t think it will do much to the economy one way or another – most people are on holiday anyway :)
That gov.za link’s been changed now … it reflects the link – but they contradict themselves in the footnotes …. http://www.info.gov.za/aboutsa/holidays.htm
Typical government efficiency.
There’s this too:

Yeh, SABC announced that this 27th is a holiday, so it’s confirmed.
I see it like this: by the 27th most people are in holiday mode already, so rather than making staff come to the office, rather give them a break and let them rest up so when they return they’re ready for action!
I don’t think they’re really worried about people with desk jobs, but rather those working in places like stores such as Pick ‘n Pay and so on. But yes, it is a blessing overall as I have to only put in leave for 4 days instead of 5. :-)
