Flick App by Cape Town student

A new app launched today called Flick (Easy to transfer files between iOS, OSX, Windows and Linux.) and it’s reported that it was created by a 20 year old Cape Town student! Absolutely awesome to see things like things coming out of Cape Town, incredibly impressive!

Android will be coming soon!

This is water

Wow, a couple of friends told me to track down this video and have a watch. I’m really glad they did because this is quite incredible and it’s actually something I’ve had long chats to friends about, the topics you never really talk about.

Take a watch, it’s only 9 minutes:

Monster DNA Headphones – My thoughts?

This morning I received a pair of Monster DNA Headphones and I am super impressed! I was asked to assist with part of the launch campaign and I wrote about the headphones from a point of view where I hadn’t actually held them in my hands. But, this time I’m writing about them whilst they’re on my ears pumping some tunes.

First off, the headphones arrive in a beautiful box, everything boxed like Apple do their products.. a pleasure unboxing. Opening the box is easy and it doesn’t take more than a few seconds to have the headphones out and ready to test. There are a few things that I really love about them:

  1. You can plug your cable into the left side or right side – more useful than you think!
  2. You receive two cables, one for portable device listening and one specifically for laptops. Strangely, this is a huge bonus and they actually make all the difference – I guess you need to see for yourself, just take my word for it.
  3. They’re damn styling – I tell you, the younger generation today is all about cruising around with headphones and whilst I was out at the shop, I kid you not when I say they go stared at a few times.
  4. The bass these puppies produce is exactly what I’d expect and the minute I heard it a smile came to my face. Clear high quality audio!

There are a few other things that I could write about, but to be honest, I think you should get your hands on a pair and take a listen/play for yourself.

Here are some photographs:

Note: I was not commissioned to write this post.

Landscapes – Video

The Internet is an incredible place, undiscovered talent becomes discovered and amazing work gets credit. This evening I came across an absolutely incredible video about landscapes. This is honestly one of the most amazing video’s I’ve ever watched and I urge you to take a watch.

What did you think? Leave us a comment and let us know :)

I’ve got to tell you, this certainly did get me realising that I have seen so little of this amazing world we live in!

ABSA failing at social media

The debate over whether social media is important or not is over – every business, big or small, should have some kind of social media strategy in play. Of course, there are companies that don’t need to do social media, but most do and should be, even if it’s a tiny and inexpensive strategy. Being ready, willing and able to address matters relating to your brand on networks such as Facebook, Twitter and the likes is a crucial part of satisfying your audience.

I went to school with a chap called Lloyd, who has been messed around by ABSA. He wants to close his account, but from the sounds of things, no matter what he does, ABSA continues to try and delay him as well as up sell their products. I understand his frustration in this regard as I went through it with Virgin, but I certainly never experienced the fail that ABSA cooked up on their Facebook Page, just get a look at this:

This, to me, is such a perfect example of social media being done incorrectly. What could have really been an easy situation to resolve now has hundreds of people involved, bloggers blogging about it and I’m sure someone’s tweeted it. A 4 day delay on the Facebook Page? Grief! ABSA need to review things, either the agency doing their social needs a bit of a spanking, or they need to give the person who does it internally some more resources because this is crazy and it’s going to spread bad news about their brand online. Perhaps they should consult FNB for some tips?

Anyway, Facebook is no different to how you’d do things in person when someone walks into your shop – value your customer and treat your customer with respect, but most importantly, when it’s something you can do for a customer, do it, don’t delay it!

Day 1: France

Hello all the way from a town in France called Montpellier! Happy Easter to everyone :)

We arrived at Cape Town International Airport at 15h00 on Saturday and boarded our flight to Johannesburg shortly afterwards. A rather awful and unpleasant flight to Johannesburg, at least it was just shy of 2 hours only. We then rushed to get onto our flight to Paris, the times were incredibly close. I believe that the only thing that kept me sane was a few minutes in the various SLOW lounges where I could take a moment to relax, splash my face and have a nibble in peace. The flight to Paris was something else. The longest I’ve been on a flight for is about 3 hours and this was 10 hours! I didn’t manage to sleep much at all, dozed a lot, but there are continual interruptions.  Nevertheless, the flight wasn’t awful and the time actually went fairly quickly. Before we knew it, we were in Paris and boy oh boy was that an experience – the airport, Charles de Gaulle, is nothing special and it’s quite tricky to navigate yourself around when you don’t speak a word of French, but the people were friendly and we found our way to a cafe to get some nibbles and then off to the next gate for our flight to Montpellier (as seen in map below). The flight to Montpellier wasn’t the best, the pressure was making my ears feel like they were going to burst, but it only took an hour and before we knew it we had landed and were ready to get the show on the road. Grabbing a taxi to our hotel was a piece of cake.

Seriously though, 28 Euro’s for a taxi for a 5 minute drive and 5 Euro for a coke o.O – Gota watch yourself here when you’re operating off Rands! The public transport here is absolutely incredible, I honestly didn’t understand what people were trying to tell me, hop on, hop off, destination reached! The ticketing system is awesome, it just takes you a bit of time to understand the different tram lines.

We had a wonderful dinner in the center of Montpellier, which is truly beautiful. The tall buildings built with architectural perfection are something that you can only really understand and experience in person. I’ve seen photographs, heck, I’ve looked on Google Maps, but it just doesn’t do them justice. I stood outside the restaurant in the middle of town, puffing on my cigarette (which is ever so accepted in France) and just admired the true beauty. People have been really friendly, we’re yet to experience someone frowning upon us for speaking English. Although, with that being said, we try our best to add a bit of an accent and throw out the odd, “Je ne parle pas français” or “Parlez-vous anglais” and these little phrases clearly earn you some respect. It’s funny walking into a cafe and saying, “We have drinks here? Yes”? Haha! Or, “Chocolat Crepe one please” ;)

I’m going to try and post as often as possible for all of you who want to follow or just enjoy seeing what France looks like. I’m armed with my iPhone 5 at the moment, but I should be able to get another point and shoot camera shortly, which will produce better photographs. Or, I’ll be a professional and chuck some Instagram filters over them :P

Here’s a quick batch:

I’m having the time of my life, I truly didn’t understand how incredible this was going to be!

Heading off to lunch shortly with some friends and then I need to do some admin and prepare my slide deck for tomorrow’s workshop.

I’ll post again soon, but otherwise you can follow me here for updates:

Incredible dancing

It’s been a while since I posted something on dancing as I honestly haven’t seen to much amazing stuff lately. That all changed this evening when I came across this video, there are tricks in this that I’ve never seen before and tricks that will put you on the edge of your seat.

Sit back, grab a snack and enjoy:

Income Tax in SA explained with beer

Suppose that every evening, 10 men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to R100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay R1.
The sixth would pay R3.
The seventh would pay R7.
The eighth would pay R12.
The ninth would pay R18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay R59.

So, that’s what they decided to do……. The 10 men drank in the bar every evening and were quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner said, “Since you are all such good customers, I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by R20″.

Drinks for the 10 men would now cost just R80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men, the paying customers – how could they divide the R20 windfall so that everyone would get his fair share? They realised that R20 divided by six is R3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer.

So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by a higher percentage the poorer he was, to follow the principle of the tax system they had been using, and he proceeded to work out the amounts he suggested that each should now pay.

Therefore, the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing.
The sixth now paid R2 instead of R3 (33% saving).
The seventh now paid R5 instead of R7 (28% saving).
The eighth now paid R9 instead of R12 (25% saving).
The ninth now paid R14 instead of R18 (22% saving).
The tenth now paid R49 instead of R59 (16% saving).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But, once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings.

“I only got a rand out of the R20 saving,” declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, “but he got R10!”

“Yeah, that’s right,” exclaimed the fifth man. “I only saved a rand too. It’s unfair – he got 10 times more benefit than me!”

“That’s true!” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get R10 back, when I got only R2? The wealthy always win!”

“Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison, “we didn’t get anything at all. This new tax system exploits the poor!”

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had their beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important.

They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists, labour unions and government ministers, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes will naturally get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas, where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

Rapper rates for live shows

It’s always interesting to look at the numbers that celebrities generate when they do their thing. Today I came across a post by a friend on Facebook which shows us what the top rappers earn when they do live shows.

Take a look at these numbers:

  1. Kanye West – $3 million
  2. Jay-Z – $3 million
  3. Eminem – $3.3 million for two nights at UK festival ($66k per song)
  4. 50 Cent – $2 million
  5. Rihanna – $800,000
  6. Lil Wayne – $500,000
  7. Drake – $155,000
  8. Nicki Minaj – $150,000
  9. Akon – $120,000
  10. T.I. – $110,000
  11. Snoop Dogg – $105,000

Quite incredible if you ask me!

Producer, musician, DJ and label owner, Alex Niggemann from Berlin will grace us with his presence at the events and awaken us to these magical new headphones! Alex is a mad house DJ, who spins between dark tech house and classic house music, if you’ve never listened to his beats, then you should probably take a listen (Look out for Poker Flat, Get Physical, and Supernature). This isn’t just another DJ, the guy’s got a big reputation, he plays in Europe and Ibiza on regular occasions and travels to Brazil and Asia to share his beats. In 2010 he launched his own record label, Soulfooled.

The focus at Soulfooled is on creating a platform for new music and promptly responding to the trends in the electronic music scene so that artists can release their music sooner. The label has already signed a number of famous international artists including Audiofly, Till von Sein, Phonique and David Durango. His productions enjoy a solid reputation. So it was no surprise to see him holding the number eight position on Resident Advisor‘s “Top 20 Charted Artists” in the end of 2009 ahead of DJ‘s such as Loco Dice, Joris Voorn or Ben Klock.

The night isn’t only about Alex and the new DNA headphones, there’s a fantastic lineup of local talents such as Richard Marshall, Rob Sloan, Guy Herman, Vanessa Holliday, Roger D’Lux, Floyd Lavine, Diggin4Dodge, JustSmart, Ryan Sullivan, Keren Onay, Les Afrique & A.B (Household Funk)
