New South African affiliate network

With the likes of AdGator closing down, affiliate networks in South Africa are on the low, but there are new ones in and around the Internet for us locals. I came across OfferPond just the other day, a new affiliate network that’s open for companies and affiliates.

I got in touch with the owner who says he already has a lot of affiliates signed up, but is looking for companies to come onboard. As a new affiliate network without many companies yet, I’d imagine this would be a really good place for a company to join as you’ll no doubt get great rates whilst the network grows.

As a company you’ll be able to expand and grow your business online using display, social and search advertising. Your banners will get loaded into the system and then distributed across all the affiliates websites.

The owner is confident about the network and feels that it could become a leader in South Africa should enough people show interest. Personally, I haven’t tried the site out yet, but will be signing up as an affiliate and will hold thumbs that companies will be able to see the value in this form of wide-spread marketing.

Public Holidays, Career & Business

South Africans enjoy 12 public holidays each year, half of these holidays fall from March to May. While you could spend these holidays soaking up the sun with family or sleeping on the couch, why don’t you try something different this year?

Career Review

Sure, you may come out feeling depressed and disappointed about your life. But at least you can start doing something about it. Don’t forget to include your family and children in your deliberations. Get excited about planning your escape from your cubicle – this could mean a 360 degree change in your career, a job at a competitor or a going solo. In 2021, you will still be talking about the public holiday in 2011 that changed the direction of your career.

Start a business online

As long as you have access to the computer and the internet access, you could potentially start an online empire. There are dozens of ways to do this for free or a nominal fee, from affiliate marketing and Google AdSense to an e-commerce store and online training. You are already reading this column on a top rated website; that has dozens of experts and thousands of articles to assist you.  Your only regret will be that you waited so long to start your business online. Caveat: you may be too tired to report for duty the next morning.

Make money with Group Buying

I’ve spoken a lot about group buying recently, purely because I think it’s going to be huge in 2011.

Because of this hype, now’s the time to jump in and capitalize on it by becoming an affiliate of one of the group buying websites.

Ubuntu Deal is a South African group buying website, which has a referral program, which pays out R30 for each person you refer who then purchases one of the deals.

In other words, you sign up for an account and get your special link, if someone clicks on your link and purchases an item, you receive R30 – it’s as simple as that.

So here are a few ways to try this:

  • Send the link to your friends via email to tell them about Ubuntu Deal
  • Share your link on Facebook
  • Talk about group buying on your website and link to Ubuntu Deal with your special link
  • Put a banner advert on your website and use your special link
  • Share your special link on Twitter

Those are just 5 ways that you could spread your special link around and potentially earn some good extra cash.

Affiliate Marketing – Lead Generation trickery

A lot of people have contacted me recently to ask questions about affiliate marketing, most specifically lead generation, so I felt I would explain that lead generation is, what sale generation is and how not to get caught out.

Firstly, it’s important to understand the difference between lead generation and sale generation, the difference is big. Lead generation offers you a payout for each lead you send – In other words, if you have a form on your website that someone fills out, such as for a loan or something, you get paid for sending the lead. In sale generation you only get paid once someone actually uses the service provided by the affiliate networking. Here’s a way to look at it:

Lead Gen: Person visits your website, fills out an insurance application form – you get paid for this.

Sale Gen: Person visits your website, fills out a form, takes an insurance policy – you get paid for this.

As you can see, the difference is massive, don’t be fooled.

Secondly, let’s take a look at not falling for big offers on sales generation. Many affiliate networks will offer you R500 for every lead you send. For example, a Bingo site might offer R500 for each person that signs up and deposits money. Now, R500 is a lot, but it’s nothing compared to what you could potentially earn if you signed up directly with the Bingo site yourself and used their structures. In most cases, a deposit of money yields you a revenue, but people don’t deposit once, they continue to deposit and you continue to earn, this makes the R500 incredibly small in comparison. You would be amazed, or perhaps not, at how many people jump at the R500/deposit option rather than going for a passive option – it’s human nature to go for the cash immediately and not wait, and these networks use this very human fault to capitalize – just watch out for this.

Ok, well that’s all I had to say really, seemed like a lot of people didn’t really understand this, so hopefully now you will. Please feel free to leave a comment with a question if you wish.

Time to cash some AdSense Cheques!

Over the past few months I’ve received a bundle of cheques from various affiliates and to be dead honest, I’ve done absolutely nothing. That’s the beauty of online marketing, if you plan carefully when planting your seeds you’ll reap the benefits for many months to come..

The only let down in this photograph is that only 3 of the 5 cheques are for 5 digit figures, next time I’ll aim for all 5!

How are your AdGator earnings doing?

I’ve been keeping a close eye on my AdGator earnings as several new campaigns have recently been released, but I’m not seeing much luck with the revenues.

During the middle of the year, I was seeing an average of just shy of R2000.00/month in earnings and then September presented me with just R766.25 and this month isn’t doing much better – We’re on the 12th of October and my earnings are sitting at R118.76, which means I’m looking at about R306.80 for this month, which is incredibly low.

This brings me to an interesting question – I currently run my AdGator advert on the right-hand side of my blog, a nice big 300×250 banner, above the fold, which takes up a good amount of space, but it’s only bring me several hundred rand a month, which compared to what my other advertisers are paying me, it’s a fraction, should I be replacing it with an another advertiser?

An Adsense block in that area would probably easily double the monthly revenue of this space.

I’ve always been a huge fan of AdGator, but at the end of the day, advertising like this is about the money, the figures talk and at the moment they’re not talking much and I’m concerned that I might need to remove AdGator and use the real estate space for something else.

However, before I do this, I’d rather ask you if you’re seeing a similar trend, because it might just be my content, which is then understandable.

Please let me know..

Earn some money with hosting affiliates

When you talk about making websites or building affiliate and lead generation websites, a topic which usually comes up is hosting. When it comes to this, remember that there are hundreds of hosting companies out there, which have affiliate problems and it’s easy to make a little extra money for your time.

The hosting company I recommend is HostGator, I host all my websites with them and they offer decent affiliate rates. Conversions are far and few between, but it does happen and it’s nice to receive a little extra here and there, like today..
