Not So Geek Dinner 3 – Magica Roma

So, the Not So Geek Dinners continue – We’ve been to Relish and Balducci’s and this time we ate in style at Magica Roma, in Pinelands. The choice of restaurant was left up to Michael, who clearly proved that he knew what he was doing!

It’s the first time I’ve been to Magica Roma and can happy say that I really enjoyed myself. The service was good, the food was delicious and the location was ideal. We had a big group of 15 people this time, which made it a very vibey evening, with tons of laughter and great conversation.

Not so geek dinner | Round 2 | Balducci’s

After a fantastic round 1 of Not so geek dinners at Relish, we were all ready to tackle a round 2. This time, Zee had the choice of restaurant and he chose Balducci’s, but more specifically, the sushi bar. Now, I’m not a big sushi person and this was the first time I’ve actually really been out for just sushi and I must admit, it was pretty cool. Honestly, I wouldn’t jump past a good steak for sushi, but it was a refreshing change!

Zee, Areejh, Warren, Ollie, Renee and Michael all attended, so it was a great group of friends! A moment to remember was Zee perfecting the Australian accent, oh and another thing not to forget was the Hostess from Balducci’s – yes, the blonde lass *hears violins* haha

Thanks to everyone for attending! I look forward to the next one, it’s Michael’s turn to choose the restaurant, so I look forward to hearing where he wants us all to go!

Not so geek dinner | Round 1 | Relish

Last night saw the first night of our quest to experience Cape Town’s finest restaurants in a not so geek manner. My friends and I have decided to frequent Cape Town restaurants bi-weekly over the course of the year. Alphabetically, by surname, we will choose a different restaurant to attend.

It’s really late, so please excuse me if some of this doesn’t make sense.

To start things off, we hit up Relish Restaurant, which is one of my favourites!

Relish Cape Town Restaurant & BarRelish serves contemporary cuisine, using the finest local ingredients, in a light and modern space. Café-style seating beside the buzz of New Church Street is great for those that like to soak up the sunshine or sit beneath the stars on warm evenings.

The restaurant seats up to 75 people indoors and 40 outdoors and is open for lunch, coffee, drinks and dinner from mid-morning until late.

The evening was well attended and totally delightful. Everyone who said they would make it, did, so all in all, there were 8 of us – thanks guys for following through! One moment, which I will never forget is Zee ordering a pizza with chorizo, which he thought was a type of cheese. Needless to say, the pizza arrived and his eyes were MASSIVE, ROFL! Sorry Zee, I just had to mention that ;)

After a delicious dinner, and great attentive service, we headed upstairs for a cocktail and some conversation, the evening was perfectly timed and everyone was back on the road in good time! For those interested, for the 8 of us, our bill came to R1214.00 (including service charge which was automatically added due to the table size), which works out to R151.00/head, which isn’t bad considering the fact that there was an extra meal ordered, a round of cocktails at the end and everyone had at least 2 drinks (of which a couple were cocktails).

Our next stop is Balducci’s at the VnA Waterfront on Thursday 6th March – I’m amped!

My dinner mission to the Codfather in Camps Bay

Introduction

The Codfather opened as a Seafood restaurant and Sushi Bar about five years ago – one of the first Sushi venues in Cape Town. We serve an excellent array of fresh seafood and sushi in a very vibey, yet warm and relaxed environment. The business has become more of a “family” over the years and many of our earliest staff members are still with us. We do not have any menus and the unique way in which the waiters help you put your meal together works beautifully in that it allows you select everything according to your appetite and budget. In other words the options and possibilities are endless .The uniqueness of the way we work still intrigues and thrills our customers.

Codfather is situated in Camps Bay, home to one of the most beautiful beaches in Cape Town – with wonderful, sweeping views of the ocean and Lions Head. We have the Sushi Bar at one end with a circular conveyor belt and informal seating and then our main restaurant seating area, including a separate smoking section (also with views). The large sliding window frontage allows us to open up to those beautiful warm Summer nights the Cape experiences. In addition there is a large, open fireplace situated in a very unique spot in the centre of it all for the cold winter nights.

My Experience

So after Mondays boiling heat, Fe and I decided to head out to the Codfather in Camps Bay for dinner. I’d never been before and was at first a bit annoyed with having to drive the whole way to Camps Bay, but as we turned up hospital bend, we could see the clouds and knew that at least it wouldn’t be boiling.

The Codfather is awesome to say the least. We were seated by probably the best waitron I’ve ever had and brought drinks within a few moments of ordering. We got sushi from the sushi bar for starters and then our waitron took us over to the fish section. At the fish section, your waitron shows and tells you about all the available fish. You choose what you want – full portions, half portions or a complete mix. We ordered from tuna to yellowtail to tiger prawns. Once you have ordered, you return to your seat and your waitron brings your food once it is ready. The food was delicious! I’m not a huge seafood fan, but after this experience, I would honestly be tempted at seafood more often. The view from the restaurant is beautiful and the atmosphere is gorgeous.

As far as prices go, it’s pricey and our bill arrived for a fairly greater than expected, R450.00 – but taking into account the service and the delicious food, it’s not bad at all.

I’d definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a lovely experience and some sushi or seafood!
