story of group buying to our shores. And if you’re interested in knowing about
the best deals in your city, then get on over to their website as soon as you can.

ubunthu-deal

Group buying, or social buying, is a global success story benefitting both businesses and consumers in many ways. In short, when many people buy a product or service, a business can drop the price accordingly. UbuntuDeal offers daily deals at 50% to 90% off the usual price, and only if a certain number of people buy it, does it go live. If not, no-one gets the deal. Once the deal is on, anyone can still buy, sometimes up to a limit. You receive a voucher in your inbox which you go and redeem at the company offering the deal.

To be promoted as a business on the site, you can apply or be chosen. Business owners may think they are cutting their turnover a bit too much here, but in reality the marketing and awareness generated by being the sole company offering a deal on UbuntuDeal for a day, is enough to make up for it. Putting your business forward on the website ensures loads of consumer traffic, as well as a risk-free, measurable campaign.

Furthermore, group buying gives customers a new experience and businesses a large number of fresh feet through the door. Whatever you do, get online, visit UbuntuDeal, and buy your first deal. Without a doubt, this is going to be one of the most visited websites in South Africa. Viva group buying!

Benefits of being promoted as a business on UbuntuDeal:

  • Guaranteed number of new customers
  • Risk-free (not enough people buy, no deal)
  • Measurable (we know exactly how many people viewed the deal, bought the deal, we know all about them, etc)
  • Great targeted marketing (you’re the only company on the site for that day, you’re on all social media, all over the Internet)
  • You get marketed by us online and in other media, such as radio and print, when we go in there
  • Working with a strong online brand: UbuntuDeal
  • Exclusive – we work together and can spend more time on your business
    and getting you new customers.

Plush me, please?

I don’t know about you but no matter how old I get I never cease to be intrigued by plushies. I gave up my teddiebears and dolls years ago but I still have a few plushies that I can’t seem to get rid off. My favourite is a comical stance of Spongebob Square pants. I can’t help but “window” shop while I’m online and I found these three adorable plush toys. Geeky, soft and .. hard-core? Yeah!

Let them eat cake

I just discovered Charly’s Bakery.

(If this is an embarrassingly late discovery, don’t vloek me. I’m from Durban. And I bet you’ve never heard of Vanille. Or Sprigs).

Anyway, Charly’s is mucking afazing, according to their website. (And, it seems, the Norwegian bride who moved her wedding from Norway to Cape Town so she could have a Charly’s wedding cake)! Their cakes certainly look awesome. Have you seen them? Check it out.

Now, next time I’m in Cape Town and take a detour past Charly’s Bakery, which is the most important treat to try?

Tips for saving on groceries

Justmoney recently ran a money makeover competition where we asked our users to submit their best money saving tips and tons of our readers submitted very handy tips on how to save money when you are grocery shopping.

Here are some of the best ones:

Don’t go shopping hungry

For those of you who know The Oatmeal website, you will remember that they did a cartoon depicting something similar. When you shop hungry not only do you buy more stuff but you also tend to buy stuff that is less healthy! Make sure you go shopping with a full tummy.

Look at in-store specials

We all get a ton of junk mail stuffed in our post boxes every week and while we might think that these are annoying, there are some great specials running at various supermarkets all the time. Keep an eye on these and, if you spot something at a really good price, write it down so that you know where to find the best deal.

Keep those coupons

Many stores not only offer in-store coupons with discounts on certain products but some also offer cash-back services. Make use of these offers, you will be surprised how much of a difference they can actually make.

Shop in bulk

You can either share the cost of buying in bulk with a friend or you can buy in bulk and store some food away. Plan out your meals according to what you have bought in bulk. For non-perishables, buy in bulk when there is a sale and keep these for the tough months.

Write a shopping list and stick to it

Decide on how much you are willing to spend on groceries and then write down what you can buy for this amount. It’s a good idea to perhaps have a pre-determined menu so that you can shop according to your menu. Do not buy anything that is not on your list.

Compare prices

We compare prices for insurance, medical aid, banks and everything else in life so why should it be different when it comes to groceries? Remember those in-store special pamphlets we mentioned earlier? Use these to make comparing prices a simple and easy process.

Awesome customer service

The most amazing thing happened to me this weekend. Two things, actually.

The first awesomeness

I was leafing through a bunch of week-old papers when I stumbled upon a brochure for the Makro birthday sale. Makro was selling Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010 for R1699-R800 off the normal R2499 price!

Now, I’m not sure if you’re using the beta version of Office 2010 at present (download a trial here), but it’s awesome. Particularly if before that you were working on Office 2003 or the fabulously useful Open Office (free office suite with programs similar to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and more). Office 2010 is lovely to look at and super user-friendly.

The second awesomeness

My closest Makro is some distance away but there’s a Game down at the Pavilion in Westville. Game’s claim to fame is: if you find a product that we sell at a price cheaper than ours, we’ll match the price and give you 10% off on the difference. Off to the Pavilion I went!

Once in Game, I was approached by a very helpful and initiative-using assistant called Wade who took one look at the printout in my hand and the shelf of software I was standing next to and knew exactly what I was there for. He promptly arranged my (now) R1620 Office dvd. I saved R880 on a great product and was given fantastic customer service.

Hat tip to Wade (ask for him if you’re shopping electronics at Game Pavilion) and thanks to Game for honouring their promise!

Do you have any excellent customer service stories?

Heartwood Trees – Personalised tree gifting

I’ve said this a million times, I love great ideas and when I come across something I think is worthy of letting the world know about, I blog it immediately, as I’m doing with this awesome tree gifting concept.

Heartwood Trees, founded by Jenni Rowe, started as a small idea and has grown over the past two years and continues to grow. The whole concept is around providing a lasting gift that you could give to someone special – this gift is a stunning tree, personalised to your liking, here’s a picture:

Jenni and her team have settled on 6 different indigenous species: Assegai, the Berg Cypress, the Cape Ash, the Wild Olive and the Yellowwood. We also chose the Mission Olive, the Kumquat, Lemon and Orange Trees to complement the range.

The website is fantastic and allows you to go through a few steps, from choosing your tree, accessorizing it and finally ordering it.

If you’re interested in ordering one or just curious to explore further, be sure to take a look at their website.

Clean up those cables with the Messless Charger Kit

How many devices do you own? At least 3 or 4 I presume. How many require cables to be charged? All of them. Well, then you’ll know what it’s like to have cables everywhere and how messy it looks!

The Messless Charger Kit is the latest in charging devices, it cuts out the cable mess and actually looks quite good. The charger comes with multiple adapters, so it’ll suite most of your gadgets and it looks sleek and stylish, so it’ll fit in just perfectly.

stylish-multi-charger

The device charges up to 4 devices at the same time and comes with 6 adapters, namely: Nokia, Nokia Mini, iPod, Mini USB, Sony Ericsson and PSP. The device comes in black, it’s powered by the mains and is 20x20x6.5cm in size.

You’ll also receive a UK adapter and an instructions manual, so there’s nothing left out with this gadget!

The Messless Charger goes for R769.00.

If you love gadgets, don’t forget to look at the Gadget of the Week section for other gadgets like the Handheld Espresso Maker!

Spar, FTW

Spar may not be at the forefront of trendy supermarket social media and it’s no vida e, but here in Natal, just up the hill from Durban, Spar is kicking ass in the cheap and cheerful coffee shop department.

A lot of our Superspars in the Highway have convenient little coffee shops within or attached to the store. Each coffee shop has its own name and menu, although some favourites like “piechipsandgravy” are found at every shop.

For a couple of years I worked a three minute walk from Westville Superspar and its coffee shop. I think my colleagues and I kept that place afloat on our own. A bit further up the hill there are three Superspars within a 12km radius from each other.

I have a weekly lunch meeting at Waterfall Superspar coffee shop (The Falls). They make a fantastic vegetarian burger (R25), a great footlong (R27) and a plate loaded with veggies and roast for R25. The waitresses know my order and make my milkshake how I like it. It’s one of my favourite lunch places and I’ll keep going back because of the great service, food and prices.

But the most awesome Spar coffee shop of all is…(drumroll)…Roses at Kloof Spar (flashing lights, wild cheering and applause). I’m pretty sure most Highway residents will agree that Roses is legendary! Their menu is excellent and unbelievably reasonable. Some of my favourites:

  • Lovely creamy milkshakes for under R10
  • Fluffy baked potatoes piled with spinach and feta for R25
  • Toasted Chelsea buns for R7.50
  • Crumpets/waffles with syrup and ice cream for under R15
  • Breakfasts that will change your life for R24-R42

My favourite Roses breakfast is a full plate of 2 eggs, 2 toasts, tomato, mushrooms, fried banana and chips with a glass of orange juice for R24. I kid you not. Talk about everyday awesomeness. Spar, FTW.
