Simple.

Life is short.

A few weeks ago, I was on a sunset flight from Cape Town to Durban. We came in to land at Durban airport and as we were about to touch down, the plane pulled up sharply and “took off” again. For the next 40 minutes or so we flew out to sea, around to Margate and back to Durban in the pitch dark, preparing for an emergency landing. We were asked to read through the safety brochures in the seatback pockets in front of us and practise the brace position. Ex-military personnel and firemen were asked to identify themselves and man the overwing exits for crash landing.

We thought we were going to die.

But we didn’t. During those long, long minutes, my life didn’t flash before my eyes, but I did think about how much I still had to live for. I learnt it’s stupid to take a single day for granted. Every day has some awesome in it, and I want to appreciate the simple, wonderful things in life in case that opportunity is taken from me when I least expect it.

This weekend I enjoyed a few easily-missable everyday awesomenesses:

  1. I had a great time pottering around home décor shops with a friend. We got inspired by beautiful wallpapers, squeezed numerous textured cushions and collected ideas for making her little house more of a home.
  2. I celebrated two birthdays (not mine) and enjoyed the company of friends who’re usually too busy to meet up.
  3. I defied my comfort zone by attending a networking event full of people I didn’t know. At one point I was standing on my own and someone I’d never met came to join me. Just because she thought it was a nice thing to do.

What simple everyday awesomenesses have you experienced the last few days?

The wedding gift solution

A friend recently commented that it seems as though “everyone and their dog” is getting married right now. We all go through fits and starts of weddings, and with them comes not only the drama of what to wear, but the plethora of presents required for the engagement party, kitchen tea (for the girls) and of course, the wedding. Raise your hand if you’ve ever fretted over what to buy for a wedding-related present!

A while ago I happened upon an awesomeness which made my day (and milked the fretting).

I “present” you with the wedding gift solution: www.yuppiechef.co.za

Oh, the joys!

Yuppiechef is a website dedicated to all things kitchen. It stocks an exceptional range of fun and fantastic products that you’re unlikely to find at most kitchen chain stores.

For example:

The Kitchen Craft Avocado Saver and Holder (R70)

Dishwash-able and with an adjustable strap.

Cuisipro Herb Keeper (R410)

For storing herbs and keeping them fresh.

Kitchen Craft Heat Funky Spatulas (R170)

Such fun for baking! Also dishwash-able and great for non-stick cookware/bakeware as it doesn’t scratch.

Brix Jarkey Jar Opener (R40)

Especially fantastic for wives when hubbies aren’t home!

Yuppiechef stocks everything from delightful farmyard cookie cutters to sleek coffeemakers the price of an old car.

Just a word of warning: don’t visit this website unless you have time to be completely distracted. And don’t get a fright when you see the prices. Not everything is expensive. Besides which, you can always club in with a few friends to get something totally awesome!

SA car mirror flags – HOT or NOT?

So I’ve naturally been seeing a ton of cars with the South African mirror flats and I’ve been wondering what people think about these. I put out a tweet to find out and the general concensus was HOT, although a few people didn’t agree.

sa-flag-mirror-flag

The idea isn’t a new one and it’s been done overseas, but Mini Cooper (BMW) was the first company to bring it into South Africa. They actually gave the mirror flags away for free to all Mini drivers and later gave them away to any vehicles provided people went in and asked for one – great marketing.

Personally, I haven’t bought a set yet, I’m miffed that I didn’t go to Mini and get a set when they came out. I believe they’re being sold for about R100 at traffic robots, which is a rip-off in my opinion, simply because I feel that a lot of people won’t be able to afford them and I see this as an initiative which is meant to bring our country together, in branded type way. Think of this – imagine what it will be like for foreigners to arrive in a country and see every single car with the South African flags on their mirrors! Now that’s a massive impact.

Do I think they’re hot? I think the concept is awesome and I guess I will purchase a pair when I arrive at a robot and have cash on me, but I certainly don’t feel it would look that great on my car, but that’s against the point isn’t it?

So anyway, would love to hear what you think about them? And, do you have a set on your car?

Madame Zingara reopens, book your tickets now!

You might have noticed that I’ve been creating a bit of hype around Madame Zingara, well here’s why..

On Tuesday 1 June Madame Zingara will re-open Victoria’s magnificent doors on the beautiful greens of Century City. With old and new performance artistes, this grande dame of burlesque style promises to mesmerize all who enter through her stained glass doors.

eZingalethu

Madame Zingara will share her love and magic not only with the patrons who visit the Theatre of Dreams, but also with local communities.

Madame Zingara has always believed that with success comes responsibility and, as before, Ikamva Labantu is firmly back on board as community outreach and brand partner. “From funds raised through the Love Magic Tour we hope to faciliate the construction of a social, medical, and community centre in Khayelitsha. To this end we have created ‘eZingalethu’ a designer shanty town on the greens of Century City, to faciliate awareness for Ikamva Labantu,” says Griffin.

Ikamva Labantu, meaning ‘the Future of our Nation’ is a non-profit organisation that helps local communities become self-sufficient and sustainable through health interventions, education and skill development, food security and the building of community infrastructure.

Ishrene Davids, CEO of Ikamva Labantu, says they are delighted about Madame Zingara’s return to South Africa. “We have worked with Richard and his team for many years and have built up a great relationship and strong friendship. We have missed Madame Zingara and we’re thrilled that the team is back, ready to continue their new work.”

As the driving force behind this year’s fundraising effort, eZingalethu will have everything from cozy recess areas, gum boots for hire, pool bar, tattoo shop, hair salon to Stella’s Place, a vibrant shanty diner where visitors can devour the amazing tastes of South African township life.

“From the sounds of the penny whistyle to the jive of Lucky’s bar, there is something for everyone to enjoy. We look to bring in a bit of township buzz to our late night revellers, with break away bars, a restaurant and superb entertainment,” says Griffin. “You don’t have to watch a show in the Theatre of Dreams to enjoy the quirky hospitality of eZingalethu. We’re inviting everybody to pop in for a bit of love and magic.”

The Cape Town Love Magic tour is scheduled to run for twelve weeks only until the end of August. For more info visit www.madamezingara.com or book your tickets now by calling 021 001 3366 or email boxoffice@madamezingara.com
