Last week I shared a couple tips on how to take better photos with Instagram. While the application was initially limited to iPhone users, it recently became available to a grateful group of Android photographers.

Statigram is a slick web application that integrates with Instagram and allows you to manage your account directly from the web. Once you’ve signed in, you’re presented with your feed in a grid view. Not a fan of grid view? No problem. You can swap between list and slideshow views as well.

Under the Viewer tab, you also have quick access to your photos, printing options for your photos, your likes, your followers, people you follow, and photos that are popular on Instagram.

The printing options for your photos are pretty cool. You can print your Instagram photos nearly anywhere. The options are iPhone cases, fridge magnets, calendars, wall art, stickers, pillows, albums and posters. These are some innovative uses of your Instagram photos and they make great gifts too. For the hardcore Instagrammers, there are also keychains, phone charms, mini stickers, bamboo picture frames and bamboo iPhone cases.

Under the Statistics tab it really gets fun. You initially get presented with an overview of your Instagram stats, from the number of photos that you’ve shared to the number of likes and comments you’ve received. You also have a breakdown of your follower rate along with your scores, which are broken down into your Love, Talk and Spread Rates.

It doesn’t end there. You can drill down even further with options for Rolling month analysis, Content, Engagement, Optimization, and Community. Statigram does a wonderful job of drilling down on your account’s statistics.

You can see the number of photos you’ve posted, your most engaged followers and your most popular photos in the Rolling month analysis, while under content you can see when you posted your first photo, what number user you are (I am number 335,820), when you post your photos, the filters you use most and which tags you use and how often. Engagement pretty much covers all your likes and comments since joining Instagram and which pictures were the most liked and commented on. Optimization takes care of the best times to submit photos, which filters have the most impact and which tags you currently use as opposed to the ones that are the most popular on Instagram to get those likes and comments numbers up. Community encompasses your followers, those you follow, your account growth and the people you enjoy most.

The next tab in the navigation bar is Snapshots. These are quirky pictures based on your stats that you can email to your device and upload to Instagram to share with your followers. It’s a pretty cool feature which I think is a nice touch.

Next is the Management tab which houses a comments tracker on your photos and a function that allows you to send and receive private messages to and from your followers and people you follow.

The Promote tab is up next with some nice features for promotion. You can promote your photos with a public URL, which allows non-Instagrammers to view your photos and an RSS feed, which you can use on your website or blog.

You can also share to Facebook. You may think that this is a no-brainer considering Facebook bought Instagram, but keep in mind that this is an independently developed web app. There is a feed tab for Facebook pages, a Timeline box and a tool to create a Facebook cover photo from your Instagram photos. Your cover photo gets put together relatively quickly, and once the pop up box appears with it, just right click to save.

The final tab is the Contest tab, with current contests being run and also past ones with their winning photos.

Ultimately I can say that this web app appeals both to the iPhoneographer and the geek in me. A mashup of statistics and Instagram is a winner in my books.

Krit.com is a local startup that lets customers reach business managers directly and privately from their phones. Feedback is instantly delivered to on-duty managers via email and SMS with an opportunity to respond before patrons leave the premises.

Everyone love great service, but no one likes throwing a scene when service goes sideways. Most customers would prefer to resolve issues offline rather than write a scathing online review that will never be answered, in all likelihood.

Krit makes it easy for customers to reach a decision-maker without spoiling their quiet family dinner. Business managers can save face by responding to their customers in minutes, not hours. Additionally, both parties’ contact details remain private.

What about venues that are not yet registered? Krit employees will track down the person in-charge and do their best to get you a response.

Does Krit work in every situation? No, some issues are better handled in-person, but there exists a whole category of problems that would otherwise go unaddressed.

You know, the little things. And they add up.

Customers don’t have time to page through a phone tree or find an email address on your website. They want to talk with you now. Existing solutions charge customers to SMS or use complex phone numbers. Why pay to complain? Krit is completely free for customers and there is nothing to install. Simply visit krit.com on your mobile phone and rate your experience at a nearby venue.

Krit is primarily aimed at restaurants, retailers, guest houses and hotels, but works for any service-based business that wants to know how customers are feeling, including night clubs, clinics, hospitals and waiting rooms. Franchises can gather valuable business intelligence by analysing customer sentiment across branches.

Visit krit.com today to start your free 60-day trial and delight your customers with Krit :).

Last week I discussed Runkeeper, a mobile app that makes fitness easier for geeks. I dug a little deeper and found Fitocracy, an app by geeks for geeks. The app’s founders were a pair of body conscious gamers who wanted to get into shape. Brian Wang was skinny, while his co-founder, Dick Talen, was overweight.

The pair now have eight-pack abs, and a booming fitness startup. Fitocracy initially started as a social fitness website in late 2010. Users can follow other members, members’ workout routines and various fitness groups. Like many current social networks, Fitocracy also has a news feed to follow the events of the members and groups the user follows.

The one thing that sets Fitocracy apart, however, is the gamification of fitness. Users are awarded points for their workouts, and because it integrates with Runkeeper, users can also get points for their runs. Users accumulate points which allow them to level up, earn badges and rank on a leaderboard. Once your workouts are complete and you’ve been allocated points, you can share your progress on Twitter and Facebook.

Since I’ve only started going to the gym lately, I decided to give Fitocracy a try. I’m lucky in the sense that I have two gym partners who keep me accountable and motivated, but that also gives me a chance to log my workout between sets.

I personally think that turning fitness into a game, with points, levels and quests is a win. Hitting the gym can be particularly daunting, but Fitocracy brings the challenge to the gym and gives you the opportunity to earn points.

The app is only available on iOS at the time of writing and it has a beautifully clean interface making it a pleasure to use. When entering an exercise to track, the application also gives the user instructions on how to perform that exercise. This is especially helpful for beginners who have joined the gym, gotten a workout routine, but aren’t exactly sure how to perform the specific exercise.

Fitocracy is a free application on iTunes.

From time to time Google release tools that are really useful, tools like GMail, tools like GCalendar and so forth and this is one of those times, Google’s releasing Account Activity!

Account Activity is awesome, it’ll give you access into what you are spending your time doing – how many emails you’re sending and receiving, how often you’re searching on Google and so the list goes on. Talk about an incredibly tangible way to measure where your time is being spent. If you’re like me and you use the Google suite of tools, then you’ll be stoked for this (but will probably realize just how much Google knows about us, haha).

Here’s a sample from a test account of what you’ll see:

If you would like to sign up, click here, opt-in and standby for an email from Google once your report is ready for viewing.

I have done this as you can see above and I’m frantically looking at how many emails I receive and send. It’s interesting to know that I reply to only 10% of the emails I receive! Here are some more things I spotted:

I’ve performed 716 Google Searches in the past month.

YouTube video’s I’ve published have received 10,846 views in the last month.

Interesting stuff! :)

I’ve received 6 emails in the past two weeks from readers asking about tools to allow them to access their photographs from anywhere, rather having saving them on a website or in email, so I felt I’d reach out and share my experience with regards to a solution known as Dropbox. For those of you who know about Dropbox or use it already, this post’s not really going to assist you much.

Dropbox was founded in June 2007 and has raised $257 million in funding, as you can imagine, it’s hugely popular and the team has the resources to make it even more popular. The concept is really simple: Dropbox creates a folder on your machine, anything you put in this folder is then accessible from anywhere in the world on literally any device. So, for example, if you take photographs on the weekend, you can put the photographs in your Dropbox folder and then access them from another machine or on your mobile device without having your computer with you. Of course, you can put anything in your Dropbox, not just photographs – I like to keep documents that I use often, templates for invoices and I also love the fact that you can share your dropbox with someone else so that they can access your files too.

Here are some important things:

Dropbox is free for the first 2 Gigabytes, which is plenty of space for a lot of photographs

Dropbox works on Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and the iPad

Once you’ve signed up, you can tell your friends about it and get more free space

Take a watch of this Dropbox 101 video if you don’t understand:

If you want to start using Dropbox, simply click here, it’ll only take a few minutes and there’s a wonderful tour to assist you!

Social Mention is a real time social media search engine, which allows you to search for something not only using conventional search engine, but it also searches social networks. Want to know what people are saying about your business online? Social Mention will help you find it.

When you arrive at the landing page, the focus lies on the search bar, allowing you to enter your specific search criteria. You can also choose where Social Mention searches for results. The current offering is blogs, microblogs, such as tumblr and Posterous, networks, bookmarks, comments, events, images, news, video, audio, and questions. Of course, you could also choose to search all of the previously mentioned corners of the Internet. There is also an option to select your social media sources. Once you click on the link, you are presented with quite the comprehensive list of sources.

Social Mention also suggests a linked list of trending topics, allowing you to see what’s being said across the web about the current trending topic.

The landing page also gives you the option to create social media alerts. Similar to Google alerts, but for social media. If you create an alert with Social Mention, you will receive an email daily with results based on your search criteria.

On the landing page you are also presented with the opportunity to add the Social Mention widget to your website or blog, allowing your to ‘display realtime buzz’ about your predetermined topic.

Once you’ve entered your search terms, the loading page informs you that it is searching content from across the universe. Hardly the Google Instant I’ve become accustomed to, but it is a specialised search engine after all, so I will give it some credit.

I figured I would do a search for ‘imod.co.za’. The result were rather interesting. There were no iMod articles that appeared in search results on the first page at all. The only thing remotely close were three mybroadband.co.za forum posts that made specific mention of imod posts.

In the left sidebar of the results page is a block with percentages for strength, sentiment, passion and reach. There are also results for hours average per mention, when your search term was last mentioned, how many unique authors mentioned the search term and how many times the search term has been retweeted. These stats make almost no sense to me and social mention hardly makes the effort to explain it.
The next subheading in the left sidebar is sentiment, obviously the general sentiment towards your search term based on certain positive, neutral and negative associative keywords.

Top keywords are just below. You can see from the data presented that the keywords are most likely pulled from social networks announcing the latest blog post on iMod. Next up are the top users who use the search term in their status updates and my tweets and it looks like I’ve also made it onto the list, probably from tweeting my own blog posts on iMod.

The top hashtags that are used in updates are up next, followed by the top sources for the search term. Logically, Twitter comes up first, but the rest of the search sources provide irrelevant information. I’m surprised that not even Facebook has featured as a source.

In the right sidebar, you have the option of saving your search results as an RSS feed, an email alert or as a .csv or Excel file. You also have the option of exporting sentiment, top keywords, top users or top hashtags as .csv files.

While Social Mention may be a useful search tool with a few insights, I feel that it could do with some work, regarding the explanation of different categories as well as relevant results for search terms.

Do you use a social search engine to monitor what’s being said about your business or your brand? Which one are you using? Share in the comments below.
