Share your Google Doc Folders

Google has just announced that you’re now able to share folders with Google Docs. What this means, simply, is that a team of people can easily collaborate on projects that require multiple documents, spreadsheets or presentations.

Naturally, when you share a folder, you can set up permissions such as read only or edit mode, just like you do for normal documents.

Update: I’ve featured NOD32 in another post, for a specific reason and I’ll mention why I left NOD32 off in a few days time.

Keep your Firefox plugins updated

To provide users a safer web experience, Mozilla is now going after plugins, which due to the lack of an effective update mechanism, are usually a few versions behind in most user’s computers, leaving them unnecessarily exposed to already patched security flaws.

With the latest Firefox 3.5.3 update, Mozilla introduced a simple check to its first run page that looks for new versions of the Flash plugin if it is currently installed. If it isn’t up to date, a link is provided to get the new version.

As planned, Mozilla is now extending this Flash check to other well known plugins to ensure users are running the latest versions and minimize the risk of exposure to known and fixed security vulnerabilities, and other bugs that may impact a user experience.

It is currently in beta status, but you can try it right now. Disregard the invalid certificate warning, and let the page check for your plugins to get a quick diagnostic.

plugin check

Note that some plugins don’t declare their version number properly so Firefox will always show these as Potentially Vulnerable. This was the case for Adobe’s Reader plugin. I updated to the latest version using Reader’s own update mechanism, but still got the warning.

According to Mozilla, you may have similar experiences with Windows Media Player plugin and the Real Player plugin.

Install multiple applications in one go!

If you are upgrading to Windows 7 from XP you will need to do a clean install, and installing your favorite apps again is time consuming and annoying. Today we look at a new service that will install your favorite applications while you walk away and do something more enjoyable.

Volery is a cool new service created by two programmers in San Francisco who believe that installing software shouldn’t require work. It’s simple to use and has a large selection of popular freeware and open source applications. Just pick the apps you want to install, download the Volery installer, then walk away and do something fun while it does all the work for you. The service installs the software with default settings and says “no” to any extra crapware (like browser toolbars) the installers might try to sneak in. Volery isn’t even installed on your system, you just use a stand alone executable to begin the install process.

Go to the GetVolery site and pick the software apps you want to install.

volery

After you made your choices, click on the Get Installer button at the bottom of the list.

volery2

Download the Volery installer file and proceed to launch it. Whilst you wait, the application will download and install all the applications of choice.

Sounds wicked doesn’t it? Well, Hot-To Geek readers are now allowed to sign up for the private beta, so if you’re interested, click here and get cracking!

The punch camera

The Punch Camera is just like any other digital camera, but with a twist. You can still load your photos onto a computer via USB, but the Punch also has a series of pins that you can use to literally punch a rasterized image onto a piece of paper. You lose a lot of definition and color, but there’s an undeniable charm to the finished result.

punch-camera-01

“This is a camera which was inspired by the loss of tangible memories,” writes designer Matty Martin of his concept. “It is meant to connect both physical and digital while minimizing excess materials and the hardships in sharing images… The Punch aligns a set of pins and then uses the force of the user to perforate a regular piece of paper. “
