Will Unthink Make You Rethink Your Social Networks?

Unthink, a new social network that’s been four years in the making, has announced their imminent launch and have positioned themselves as an anti-Facebook and anti-Google+ social network.

Why would a social network launch and define itself by something it is not, rather than something that it is?

Skype translations

I’ve just caught up on some news from Skype, they’ve launched a little infographic with some translations so that we’re able to greet people around the world in their spoken languages. I must admit, when I started reading the post, I thought this was going to be an actual feature inside Skype, but it appears not, so I was a little let down to be honest – it would be so easy to build this in.

Anyway, it’s always cool to see other languages, so this infographic will still be fun and useful.

Boomerang update available

I use email a lot, as in, a LOT and when it comes to email I like being in control and one thing that I can’t live without is being able to schedule emails. It’s when I found Boomerang that I realised this was all possible and since then I’ve used Boomerang every single day of my life, so it’s with great joy that I receive an email from them telling me that an update is available.

Boomerang now was Pro, Personal and Basic accounts, and along with this come some awesome new features:

Recurring messages allows you to send recurring emails without having to leave your inbox. This means that you can schedule an email to deliver at the same time every day, week, month and so forth. So, if you need to remind a team member of a task, schedule and email to deliver every week and you’ll no longer have to remember to do it.

The second feature is Notes, this gives you the ability to add a note to a scheduled email, so if you forget what the email was about, the note can remind you. Pretty useful for power users.

Smart Menu is the third feature, this menu learns when you schedule emails and once you’ve scheduled the same email several times, the Smart Menu will learn this and make it available to you with the use of a short code.

The Smart Menu is available to those of us on the free Basic account; the other two features are available on the Pro and Personal accounts, which are unfortunately not free. The personal account costs $4.99 per month and $49.99 per year, and the Professional account costs $14.99 per month and $149.99 per year. It’s worth clicking through to their website to read about their pricing and what functionality is available in each account.

Introducing the Samsung Central Station

Samsung’s come out with a new product, the Central Station. The idea behind the Central Station is a device that acts as a hub for all your peripheral devices. It’s a little more involved than this though, you connect all your devices and the Central Station creates a wireless point, which communicates with your Laptop – so it’s essentially a product that turns your otherwise wired devices into wireless devices – pretty neat.

They’ve launched the device along with a cool video, that comes with some interesting facts.

First, take a watch:

The film took just over 150 hours to create the animations, there are 1852 still frames and 14 seconds of video at the start. 21 USB cables featured in the form, while another 50 acted as ‘stand-ins’ to replace the various wires that died during the animation process. All wires were specifically made for the shoot, so they were 3m in length.

The longest time Toby, the star of the film had to sit still, for was seven hours. By the time he finished he was left with marks embedded into his skin from the USB cables wrapped around him, and the laptop keyboard keys imprinted onto his left cheek. There was also a rather large puddle of drool on the desk which he kindly cleared up. The positions that he had to hold himself in were extremely uncomfortable which meant he was in a great deal of discomfort for several hours at a time.

So, what do you think?

You can find more info about the product at the following URL: www.samsung.com/centralstation

Twitter integrated with iOS 5

Yesterday I talked about FourSquare the their new functionality based on iOS 5 and now Twitter’s come to the party and updated accordingly. They’ve made it even easier to share and tweet from your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

You’re now able to enter in your login details via your device’s settings and from then onwards you’ll be connected to your Twitter account. What does this mean? Well, it means you can now tweet directly from your Apple applications like Camera, Photos, Safari and YouTube.

On top of this, you’ll now be able to do the same through third party applications like FlipBoard, Instagram and so forth.

The update’s available, grab your copy now!

Spend your eBucks at HiFi Corporation

Received a notification this morning alerting me to the fact that I can now spend my eBucks at HiFi Corporation! If you’re like me, AV mad and an FNB customer, you’ll be jumping up and down. Racking up eBucks isn’t too hard, especially with the amount of petrol we all go through, so next time you look, you might be able to buy yourself a Bluray player, LED monitor or the likes.

Another cool thing is that it’s not only about spending your eBucks at HiFi Corporation, you can also earn 2.5%+ back when you buy something at HiFi Corporation, so that’s another way to rack up your eBucks!

I’m really stoked to see a great stall join forces with eBucks.

Discover Interesting People Around You With ShoutFlow

Not too long ago, I wrote a post about Sonar, an app that helps you find mutual connections around you using Foursquare. ShoutFlow is a pretty similar application, but it takes things a step further by using Facebook instead, and finds people around you based on your common likes and information.

When using the web application, simply login with Facebook and ShoutFlow will do the rest by analyzing your likes, friends and conversations and match them to those of your friends. Once the analysis is done, you’ll be presented with an infographic of your top 10 friends according to the previously mentioned criteria. ShoutFlow will also throw in some interesting information showing what percentage of your friends are girls, the average age of your friends, and what percentage of your friends are single.

Introducing Google Analytics Premium

Google Analytics, for those who don’t know, is a free service provided by Google that allows website owners to view all sorts of information about the people who arrive at their website. From simple things such as what country the visitors come from to advanced formula’s for calculating social media traffic and conversions.

Today, Google has announced that they’ve launched a Google AdWords Premium account, which gives advanced users even more tools, support and access to more data (if that’s even possible!).

The main additions are:

1. Extra processing power
2. Advanced analysis
3. Service and Support
4. Gaurentees

The bad news is that the Premium accounts are only available to those in the United States, Canada and the UK, so us South Africans are going to have to wait a while still.

Here’s a video to bring you up to speed:

CSS Desk: quick and easy CSS testing

I come from a programming background, desktop applications, websites and even some firmware stuff for electronic devices. I love programming, but as a day job it just doesn’t suite me unfortunately. So these days I don’t do too much coding, but from time to time I need to do some web stuff and when it comes to CSS, well, that’s a job for someone else ;)

CSS Desk is a web application I’ve used a number of times as it allows you to test your CSS on the fly instead of saving and refreshing a browser. So, if you need to hack some div structures together and see results quickly, then this application will be of use to you.

I must warn you, this is a great application, but it’s very basic, so I wouldn’t go as far as dealing with transparencies and so forth, and you’ll have to use absolute URLs for certain things, but if it’s something simple, then by all means this application will save you a nice amount of time.

Have you used CSS Desk before?

Twylah is an awesome new web service that aggregates your tweets and creates your own brand page, basically summarised by the topics that you tweet about most. Think of it as your very own trending topics Twitter page.
