21 Day Challenge
Hi folks, I’m so surprised that no one has given me grief about the challenge for not posting. Anyway, good news is that I haven’t stopped, I’ve actually done very well :)
04.05.2010 – Day 9
I jogged on Tuesday, although it wasn’t a big jog as I was jam packed with things to do.
05.05.2010 – Day 10
I did a proper jog and pushed myself quite a bit, felt exhausted, but felt good too!
06.05.2010 – Day 11
I slacked. Bit sad to say, but it’s the first day that I slacked. I guess in a positive light, justBcoz (Thank you!!!) put together an exercise program for me. It’s a proper program, which involves skipping, dumbells and exercise balls, so I’ll be implementing her program into my routine, which will result in me running 3 or 4 times a week and working out on the other days.
Tomorrow I’ll be doing a proper jog as well as some exercises; I want to do some of the exercises from cow_grrls routine before I start properly next week just so I know what I’m doing.
How’s everyone else doing, you all exercising?
Day 8 of 21
After last night’s serious activities, my knees are very sore and whilst warming up to go jogging, I decided that it might be best to rather do some exercises than taking the chance and hurting my knees.
I spent some time looking around the web for some exercises, mostly upper body and I came across these, so I did 10-20 of each and am going to try and repeat it either later this evening or early tomorrow morning.
Decline Pushups – Deltoids

Indian Pushups – Biceps

Inverse Push-ups

Crunchs

Those Inverse Push-ups totally killed me! Rox has started her routine as well, so I’m not alone thankfully!
Day 7 of 21
Ok, wow, lol! Today is day 7 of my 21 day challenge and I honestly thought I was going to fade based on the events of last night, amongst other things.
So here’s what happened: I was chilling out, doing very little to be honest and then it kicked in, the guilt of starting something up and ducking out already. It dawned on me, I just had to get off my butt, hungover or not, get my running shoes on and go for a jog. So, that’s exactly what I did, and it was worth it. I got home feeling quite energized, despite taking strain, but I felt good, good enough to grab my racket and head down to the court for a splash of tennis.
Now, I’ve been doing my best to play a little tennis from time to time over the past few weeks, just heading down, practicing my serve and generally just being outside, in the sun, being active. I was having a good time and then it happened – Ikea, an unknown character appeared with a racket and politely asked if he could join me, naturally I said yes and off we went, like a rocket. 30 minutes of serious tennis with my incredibly unfit body and I felt I was going to actually fall over! Never-the-less, it was so great and I’ll be knocking on number 5 the next time I go for a game and hopefully Ikea will join me.
Of all the 7 days, I thought today was going to be my weakest exercise day, when in fact it turned out to be the most physical! Funny how that always happens isn’t it? Talking of exercise, Rox is starting up Muaythai again tomorrow, so I’ve now got someone else to talk to who’s unfit and wants to get fit, woohoo!
I followed this with a great braai and a movie called Leap Year, which I highly recommend to any hopeless romantics out there :)
Aaaawesome weekend!
Day 5 and Day 6 of 21
For those of you following my exercise program, you might have noticed that I missed a few days. Well, I did my exercise, I just didn’t have a gap to blog it, so this post serves purpose for Day 5 and Day 6 of the 21 day challenge.
Friday 30th April was a usual exercise day, I got the takkies on and went for a good jog, whilst everyone was heading to Newlands for the Stormers game. I did alright and felt very good afterwards.
Saturday 1st May, Day 6 of 21, was a little different. Instead of running, I went to Sportsmans Warehouse and got myself some new jogging shorts and tennis balls, and spent a good 45 minutes on the court practising; was hard work, but a great feeling to hit a ball around again and even better to get some sun before the winter months kick in.
So today will be Day 7 of 21, my first week coming to an end; I plan on jogging this evening, but it’s going to be interesting after Rox’s 30th party last night at Asoka!
1 week down, 2 to go!
Day 4 of 21
I think you’ll all be impressed with me this evening..
I finished work just after 6 and decided to pop in at my folks place, to which my Mom offered to buy some dinner and we could eat and watch SYTYCD (last 2 people getting kicked out before the finals). Long story short, I was amped for my Mom’s idea, but then I thought about these blog posts and I thought about the commitment and I actually got off the couch, which happened to be incredibly comfortable, and drove home. I changed into my gear, and hit the road.
Honestly, it took absolutely everything in me to spur myself on to running this evening, the devil on my left shoulder had such a strong argument, but I listened the to other and I’m pleased with myself.
The run went very well this evening, I arrived home feeling strong and happy, which is the exact reaction I’m looking for from this venture.
Oh, and the best part.. I then jumped in my car, boosted back to my folks and enjoyed watching SYTYCD..
Amazing to watch Jakob and Mollee dance a Viennese Waltz so quickly, definitely not an Ordinary Day!
Perfect!
Day 3 of 21
So after the Llandudno mission today, I caught myself wondering whether I needed to exercise this evening and the minute I felt that, I picked up my trainers and iPod (need new headphones, 2 pairs were completely eaten, 1 pair eaten enough to only allow one speaker to work – the little terrors did it), and got underway!
This evening I spent a bit more time warming up and ended up jogging quite a bit further than I usually do, so I’m very pleased about that. My mate Gareth Cotton (a financial guy on iMod *), told me his story:
I most certainly do, yeah… Started out in Matric with a challenge from one of my mates to run the 8km fun-run attached to the Two Oceans. Got into training by running around a 400m track near my place until couldn’t go any further. Then would go back two days later, and try and go one more lap. Then next time, one more lap. And so it went…
Klapped the fun-run, and went on to run a handful of half-marathons as well over the next few years.
What a great story and his extra lap each time is exactly what I’m trying to do, push it just that much more each time and the end result will be powerful. I actually said to Gareth that perhaps I now have my answer to what will happen when I reach 21 days, I’ll look for a half marathon and try to do it, but I’ll decide on that at 21 days, I’m not jumping the gun.
3 runs over and I can honestly say that I’m really feeling great about it :)

Day 2 of 21
So, after chatting to my Mom (she’s a source of inspiration and motivation, come to think of it, so is my fiancé, family, friends and work colleagues), I decided that I would get started with some exercise, which lead to my 21 day challenge.
Yesterday saw day 1 of my 21 days challenge – Every evening I would walk/run as much as I could for 20-30 minutes as a start to getting a bit fitter. This evening I successfully completed day 2, so I’m on track and feeling good about it. I received some interesting questions about my venture, here they are, with my responses:
Q: What is your aim?
A: Quite simply, fitness. I’m not interested, at this point at least, in getting a 6 pack or huge arms that I can show off on the beach, this one’s all about me and how I feel as a person. I’d love to be able to run up my stairs and not feel exhausted afterwards and I’d love to be able to bend down to pick something up and not feel 60.
Q: Why are you blogging it?
A: Well, I stated that I would do 21 days, with an update each evening, so it’s very easy for everyone to see if I fade, which would hopefully result in a few hate mails, but more importantly, it’s a great motivation for me to keep going.
Q: What happens after the 21 days?
A: I don’t actually know to be honest, I’m really concentrating on the small picture here and ideally I’d like to arrive at the 21 day mark and feel motivated to continue, or even better, a habit will have been created. I hear stories about people who love getting home and going for their run, that would be awesome.
This evenings mission was good, I managed to push myself a little harder and my muscles felt happier, I’m still far from where I want to be, but it’ll come with perseverance.
Before I head off, I’d like to thank everyone for their kind words, I got some really great comments – have a read.
Day 1 of 21
Lately I’ve been thinking about my health and taking into account how people who are successful are often fit and it dawned on me that I was anything but fit and that I best start doing something about it before I run into health problems.
Now, getting up and going jogging is not something anyone can just do; personally, my body would probably pack up if I did that, so I’ve decided to take things slowly so as to not put myself too hard and thus end up giving up (has happened before).
This evening I decided that what I would do is just walk quickly for 20 minutes without a break – I guess there are a lot of you who would laugh at this, but you know, I gota start somewhere. I did a little stretching before setting off as I know what the muscles can feel like the next day and I’d like to be able to drive to work!

Good news is that I made it, 20 minutes, heart rate up and I feel good about doing it. Bad news is that I’m incredibly unfit, to a point where I’m a little embarrassed. I made it without stopping and I didn’t die along the way, but my legs are hurting and I feel pretty exhausted.
If anyone has any tips, please just pop me a comment, or even just a comment motivating and encouraging me to continue would mean a lot to me. I must review the list of 10 easy ways to lose that stomach as well!
So, that’s day 1 of 21, I look forward to reaching my goal!
