Liverpool end season on a high after thrashing hapless Spurs

Final score: Liverpool 3 – 1 Tottenham Hotspur

Yesterday the exciting season of the English Premiership finally came to an end and what a better way to finish than with a win?

I’ve always maintained that any club that goes into Anfield hoping for more than a point better think twice about the possibilities. The thing is, Liverpool are very hard to beat at Anfield, and Tottenham Hostpur were unfortunate to meet Liverpool at their meanest mood after the Reds had lost out to Manchester United last week in the battle for Premiership title.

Fernando Torress and Yossi Benayoun both found the back of the net for the Reds, the other one for Liverpool came as an own goal by Spurs’ Alan Hutton. Former Livepool striker Robbie Keane did manage to pull one back for the visitors in the 76th minute, but Liverpool emerged winners at the end of the 90 minutes.

Liverpool away kit for the 2009/10 season – Looks stunning

I’m not too sure how many of you have picked up on this one, but I recently stumbled upon the new Liverpool kit for the 2009/10 season and I just think it looks absolutely stunning. Well, if you haven’t seen it, here it is:

Nice ;)

Oh and yesterday I posted a leaked photograph of the Manchester United new home kit for the 2009/10 season on FOOTBALL FEVR, I have all sorts of mixed feelings about it, but let me let you be the judge, check it out here.

Till next time ;)

Gerrard keeps Liverpool’s title hopes alive

Steven Gerrard struck twice in the first half to make it 2 – 0 to Liverpool by the end of the first 45 minutes.

The second half went down almost like the first, with Liverpool being the dominant side at West Ham.  West Ham tried to hold their own but the Reds were too much to handle as they scored their third of the night through substitute Ryan Babel, who had earlier come on for Fernando Torres. The final score was West Ham 0 – 3 Liverpool.

This result puts Liverpool back in the driving seat and relatively keeps their hopes of winning the title alive. Though it must be mentioned that Manchester United who also have 80pts at second position have 2 matches in hand.

With two more league games to play for, Liverpool will remain hopeful that United drop points in their remaining fixtures. This is basically the only way Liverpool will win this one.

If you missed the game and didn’t see the goals, FOOTBALLfevr has them all, just click here to watch them.

Well done to Liverpool for tonight’s win away from home.

Till later ;)

Famous athletes are being snapped up by model agencies

More and more famous athletes around the world are being snapped up as models and ambassadors for top-selling international fashion lables. Gone are the days of using only “pretty boys” to sell their clothing. Turn the page in a magazine and you’ll see the likes of Tiger Woods flashing his latest Tag Heuer watch or Andre Agassi cleaning up rather “nicely” as the face of Aramis.

One of the more recent ‘rock star’ pairings is that of Manchester United Football Club and luxury fashion label, Paul Smith. To mark this partnership, Paul Smith stores in Johannesburg and Cape Town are offering South African soccer fans the opportunity to win signed memorabilia (on display in the store) including a soccer ball, team photograph, blazer and tie.

Hull City 1 – 3 Liverpool – The Reds keep up the pressure on Man United

Dirk Kuyt struck twice to ensure that Liverpool’s title dreams remain alive when they mauled relegation-threatened Hull City on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds were put ahead by a 45′ strike from Xabi Alonso in the first half. Dirk Kuyt then scored from a header to put the visitors 2 goals up in the 63rd minute of the game. Even though they were reduced to ten men, the Tigers continued to give the Reds a hard time but Liverpool showed the strength they are feared for and held their own to keep the pressure up on Manchester United. The home side did manage to pull one back through Marcio Geovanni but Kuyt had the last laugh as he made it 3-1 to Liverpool with a strike in the 89th minute of the game.

Liverpool now have 74 points, same as Man United, but United still have to play later today.

Here’s the first goal by Xabi Alonso:

Liverpool and Arsenal strike it even at 4 to 4!

So Liverpool and Arsenal took to the stadium the other day to thrash it out in a killer of a match, which ended up as a draw. Poor Liverpool, after the most amazing Liverpool vs Chelsea game, we were really hoping for a win!

Ofcourse this draw put Liverpool on top of the Premiership table but that was always to be short lived as Man United reclaimed top sport after winning against Portsmouth last night. United are now sitting 3 points clear.

Here’s that brilliant equalizer by Torres which brought Liverpool on level terms with Arsenal before half time.

Final result was Liverpool 4 : 4 Arsenal  :(

UEFA have put the Chelsea – Liverpool thriller among 10 ‘Classics’

I’m not sure how many of you picked up on this one already, but I thought I should share with the majority of the iMod Community who haven’t.

After that game on Tuesday night, everyone that watched it came out and declared it was probably one of the best games ever in the competition, If I’m not mistaken I think I mentioned it in my post match report here on iMod. Well it appears that we weren’t smoking our socks ( Those of us that actually watched the game, shame on you Chris :) ) when we said it was a ‘one of a kind’ thriller as UEFA have included this match in a list of 10 classic matches to have ever graced the competition. Now isn’t that something to smile about?

And more, according to reports from the UEFA site, there are three other Liverpool matches in that list…WOW (give yourselves a round of applause now) Wanna know more about the other three matches? Here’s a report from sport24.co.za

First up is the Reds’ dramatic 4-2 victory over fellow Premier League heavyweights Arsenal at the quarter-final stage of last season’s competition.

Liverpool led 2-1 with six minutes remaining and looked to be on course for the last four, before an incredible slaloming run from England winger Theo Walcott set up Emmanuel Adebayor for a goal that put Arsenal in front on the away goals rule.

With extra time beckoning, Steven Gerrard converted a penalty after substitute Ryan Babel had been brought down by Kolo Toure, with the Dutchman then firing home in added time to clinch
Liverpool’s progress and a 5-3 aggregate win.

But the Merseysiders succumbed to an equally sensational defeat in the quarter-finals of the 2001-02 competition, when a late goal from Brazilian defender Lucio earned German side Bayer Leverkusen a 4-2 second-leg win that took them into the last four.

Liverpool’s most famous Champions League performance, however, came in the final of the 2005 competition in Istanbul.

Trailing 3-0 to Italy’s AC Milan at half-time, Rafael Benitez’s charges stormed back into the game in the second period, scoring three times to take the match to extra time and then clinching victory in the penalty shootout thanks to the heroics of Polish goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek.

Milan had been the victims of a similarly jaw-dropping comeback in the 2003-04 competition, which also features in UEFA’s list.

Having beaten Deportivo La Coruna 4-1 in the first leg of their quarter-final tie at the San Siro, the Rossoneri travelled to Depor’s Riazor stadium fully expecting to progress.

But the Spanish underdogs stunned them by racing into a 3-0 lead by half-time, with a late goal from Fran capping a remarkable and unprecedented turnaround.

Dramatic comebacks are unsurprisingly prominent on UEFA’s rundown, which features Monaco’s 3-1 quarter-final destruction of Real Madrid in 2004, in which a goal from Monaco’s Fernando Morientes, on loan from Real, helped dump his shell-shocked employers out of the competition.

Also included on the list are Barcelona’s 5-1 (6-4 aggregate) quarter-final victory over Chelsea in 2000 and Fenerbache’s 3-2 spotkick win against Sevilla in last season’s round of 16, after
both legs had finished 3-2 to the home side.

Manchester United’s memorable 1999 triumph earns them two places in the list.

Inspired by Irish midfielder Roy Keane, Alex Ferguson’s men fought back from 2-0 down to beat Juventus 3-2 in Turin in the semi-finals, having scraped a 1-1 draw in the first leg at Old
Trafford.

More drama was to follow in the final in Barcelona, when injury-time efforts from substitutes Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer secured a scarcely believable 2-1 triumph against Bayern Munich.

A match lost, but a lot of pride salvaged for Liverpool

Chelsea vs Liverpool 14 April 2009 – 4 goals : 4 goals

Wow, how do I start this one? Do I start from the first minute or the last? Basically if you didn’t catch the action live on TV or at the stadium, then you seriously missed out on the best football match ever! Yeah sorry, I know life is unfair like that.

It was end to end action for the full 90 minutes; I tell you the only time I left my couch was at half time just to fix myself a drink.  Liverpool against all odds went 2-0 up courtesy of a Fabio Aurelio freekick and a penalty from Xabi Alonso. But early in the second half, Chelsea came back on level terms with strikes from Drogba and Alex.

With the score locked at 2 all and the clock ticking, I am sure many Liverpool fans got a scare as that score would have been enough to see Chelsea through on aggregate. As if that was not nerve wrecking enough for the Reds fans, Frank Lampard scored the third for Chelsea to make the score line read Chelsea 3 – 2 Liverpool.

The third goal seemed to have woken up a ‘sleeping giant’ though as Liverpool equalised five minutes later through Lucas and took the lead once again in the match through Dirk Kuyt a minute later, the scores were reading Chelsea 3 – 4 Liverpool at this point, but ‘Mr Chelsea’ himself struck again to send the Blues through to the semis.  Oh ‘Mr Chelsea’ is Lampard for those of you who didn’t know.

Liverpool might have lost the match but I think everyone that watched the match will agree that they lost with pride, If I were a Liverpool fan, I’m sure I would’ve had a smile on my face waking up this morning. ;)

That match has to go down as the best match of the Champions League this season. On that note, I would like to say, well done to Liverpool, soldier on, last night was just not your night! If the match continued for another hour, it would still have ended with a draw.

***takes hat off and bows to all Liverpool and Chelsea fans***

UEFA Champions League – Chelsea vs Liverpool, Tonight!

Morning all!

Tonight is a big night for all Liverpool fans around the world. Mainly because they certainly have a mountain to climb tonight when they meet Chelsea in the Champions league quarter final clash at STAMFORD BRIDGE.

Now despite Liverpool’s fine showing on the weekend in an English Premiership match against Blackburn Rovers, tonight they play away from home and HAVE TO score at least three goals without a reply from Chelsea to advance to the semis. Now that ladies and gents, is not impossible but there are a few factors one should take into consideration before getting all excited:

1. Chelsea have a fine home record, having only lost twice at home this season, and mind you it was against Arsenal and Liverpool, both matches were lost by a goal to nil (Liverpool MUST score three.

2. After Liverpool gave that thrashing to Chelsea in a league match just a few weeks ago, Guus Hiddink will be well aware of the threat Liverpool are capable of posing tonight, so he’ll be well prepared.

3. There is a high possibility that Liverpool’s cult hero Steven Gerrard will not be available for selection as he’s been out injured for the past week. I am not implying that Liverpool only perform when he’s available, but he’s a big influence to the team and Torres (El Nino) is just magnificent with Gerrard around.

Now…. on the positive side for Liverpool is that…

1.  On the weekend against Bolton Wanderers, Chelsea almost gave away a lead of 4 – 0 and ended up winning the game 4-3. This tells you that after scoring four goals, Chelsea went to sleep in the second half and almost drew the game. Being 2 goals ahead on aggregate might give them that cushion, which might work on Liverpool’s favour.

2. After thrashing Blackburn without the service of Gerrard, they are oozing with confidence, which in a football match; believe it not makes a huge difference

3. Hmmm, the third point is…. Really none, Liverpool have to go out there and show true character to steal it from the Blues.

I wish I could say rosier things about Liverpool, but tonight is a tough one, I know they can pull it off, Liverpool on their day can beat any team and they’ve proven that this season.

It’s a tough one, but it will be a match of the season for me, looking forward to it….

Talk to you after the game,

Laters ;)
