Sell and manage products on Twitter

So I was chatting to the folks at Wixel, a South African company which has rolled out a neat application that infuses Twitter and e-commerce really well. The application is called BoxRockit and the premise is really simple: The app allows you to add products and then schedule tweets to announce the product. When the tweets go out, a follower can click on the link, see a unique product overview and purchase the product. The cool part is that BoxRockit then displays sales, stats and so forth in a Dashboard for the seller. It’s an incredibly unique and simple concept, which is why it’s going to be powerful for online sellers.

I created an account and within 10 minutes I had products loaded, tweets scheduled and I was ready to sit back and monitor my sales. It would have taken me only 5 minutes to get setup, but I needed 5 to do the product images because I suck at designing ;)

Here are some screenshots:

I know people track link drops via Bit.ly and it’s great for monitoring clicks, but that’s about it – that’s like Analytics without Goals.. almost pointless. BoxRockit ties to loop and shows you your sales, which is all that counts really. If I had a physical shop, it’s great and all knowing that people have walked in and looked around, but I want to know how many sales I’ve made! BoxRockit understands this.

So yeh, cool little application, done by Saffers.. support them, click here to go have a look at the site – give it a go, load some products, make some money!

Freakiest Facebook thing I’ve ever seen!

Goodness me, if there was ever a campaign that got my blood bubbling it was this one, incredibly clever, brilliantly created and just darn right scary.

You know, what’s most interesting about this, is that if some software can do this in an automated manner, then there’s a really good chance that some sick person out there could be doing this right now, let this be a lesson in privacy to you.

Check your privacy settings on social networks on a regular basis, don’t open yourself up to the world, you never know who’s watching.

Mark Burnett’s Social TV Network – Youtoo

Creator of Survivor and many other reality TV shows, Mark Burnett, is in the process of rolling out his very own social network, Youtoo. This is the world’s first social TV Network and from what I can tell, anything Mark puts his hands on turns to gold, so this is going to be an exciting journey for all of us to watch.

The idea of Youtoo is to use advanced technology to combine a social network and television network so that they work together. Millions of people want to be on TV, so that’s the idea for this – a web application that gives people the chance to be on TV.

Today’s social networks only allow you to interact with your friends or followers. But Youtoo allows you to interact with millions on national TV. Plus, it integrates with your current social network so you can share your Yootoo experience with friends.

Everybody wants to be on TV. In the first year, Youtoo will put over 150,000 people just like you on national television – from anywhere. But there are rules to being on TV.

Youtoo TV is currently in 15 million cable households in the US and growing fast. Just like any other cable network, you have to look up Youtoo TV on your cable guide.

If you don’t get Youtoo TV, call your cable or satellite provider and demand your Youtoo TV!

It’s still in Beta, so it’s going to be a while until everyone has access and I’m sure there will be a few bugs along the way.

Mobile application research – results!

I was recently invited to take part in some research behind mobile app development. A lot of questions were asked so a lot of data could be extracted. I was, unfortunately, unable to attend the conference where the results were unveiled, but I was handed a copy so I wanted to share them with you as it’s very useful for anyone in industry.

The research was conducted by Vodacom and Columinate when it was recognized that the importance of incorporating application developers into its long-term strategies was increasing. The problem was that no formal research had been conducted, so the plan was to fix this. The core objective of the research was to develop insights that would help in the development of the local ecosystem, and support collaborations to harmonize the present programmes and initiatives available. A 360 degree view on the local ecosystem was pursued, incorporating the views of three groups: Industry Experts & Influencers, Developers and Consumers.

A great deal of information was extracted from all the data and I don’t have hours to write it all done, so I’ve decided to outline a few things that I find interesting, and if you’re interested, you can download the official documents below.

52% of the local market use BlackBerry’s, this is followed by 21% Nokia, 7% Samsung, 6% Apple and 4% HTC. The most common activities which result in people using their mobile devices are: waiting, commuting, eating, socializing, traveling, shopping, in bathroom, cooking, conversation, putting in petrol. 19% of people use their devices in the bath/shower, 29% when in a meeting and 54% whilst shopping. The most common places of use are: home, on-the-go, work, in a store, in a restaurant, in a coffee shop, at a social gathering. 95% is at home, 86% on-the-go and 82% at work.

Media consumed whilst using a mobile device: is as follows: 66% music, 54% Internet, 46% TV, 41% radio, 34% newspaper, 25% books and 16% games. Here’s an interesting on: The percentage of people who will give up something for their device:

  • Newspapers – 57%
  • Beer – 45%
  • Chocolate – 43%
  • Radio – 39%
  • Sport Event – 38%
  • TV – 29%
  • Favourite Shoes – 25%
  • Computer – 11%

Some really interesting statistics if you ask me, definitely makes me think very different about mobile usage in our country (South Africa).

Let’s look at mobile apps in more detail:

When they downloaded their first app:

  • Veteran (more than 2 years ago): 19%
  • Intermedia (6 moths to 2 years): 44%
  • Novice (less than 6 months ago): 38%

In other words, 81% of people downloaded their first app in the past 2 years.

Total apps downloaded:

  • More than 30 – 15%
  • 11 to 30 – 30%
  • 10 or less – 55%

How do people hear about apps:

  • Word of mouth: 74%
  • App store: 53%
  • Social Networks: 43%
  • Software which gets an app: 35%
  • Mobile Advert: 18%
  • Online Advert: 15%
  • TV: 14%
  • Newspaper/Magazine: 11%
  • Radio: 8%
  • Billboards: 5%
  • Other: 1%

The apps that are most used are for: instant messaging, social networking, emailing, browsing the web, GPS, weather, banking.

Im going to stop there as that’s a lot of information already, but please do download these files. The report goes into which platforms are most popular, predictions thereof, monetizing application, etc, etc, etc.

How many domains are registered every day?

So we all know that thousands of new domains are bought every day and that we’re running out of IP4 addresses and so forth, but how many domains are actually being registered every day?

I came across a great website which actually shows exactly how many domains are being registered every single day. I can tell you that today, 23 September 2011, 97,388,394 .com domains have been registered, 14,168,093 .net domains and 9,457,857 .org domains have been registered. Those are some pretty amazing stats.

Here’s the table:

This isn’t the only information shown on this website, there’s all sorts of metrics that you can explore. I found it quite fascinating, hoping you will too.

Google Wallet is here!

Google Wallet is an Android app that makes your phone your wallet. It stores virtual versions of your existing plastic cards on your phone. Simply tap your phone to pay and redeem offers using near field communication, or NFC (what?).

Google Wallet has been designed for an open commerce ecosystem. It will eventually hold many if not all of the cards you keep in your leather wallet today. And because Google Wallet is a mobile app, it will be able to do more than a regular wallet ever could, like storing thousands of payment cards and Google Offers but without the bulk. Eventually your loyalty cards, gift cards, receipts, boarding passes, tickets, even your keys will be seamlessly synced to your Google Wallet. And every offer and loyalty point will be redeemed automatically with a single tap via NFC.

Google Plus Stats infographic

Google Plus hasn’t been around for that long, so looking at these statistics is quite something. The rapid growth of the social network is one of the fastest I’ve ever seen, but just how quickly and what’s happening in the social network from a data point of view?

Here’s a great infographic showcasing some interesting facts and statistics about Google Plus:

Google to expand into Europe for Group Buying

Is Google venturing more into Group Buying?

I picked up on a story on TechCrunch this morning about Google buying about German Group Buying website, DailyDeal.de. This site having only been around since December 2009, who knows what Google would have paid?

Reports say that DailyDeal sold over 252,000 coupons in the first three months of 2011 – that’s huge penetration, penetration which they feel will lead the company to earning 40 million Euro’s in just 2011 alone, no wonder Google went after them.

Google naturally has it’s own Group Buying service, but it’s geared up for North America mostly, so this would allow them to work their way into Europe I would image. Reports have confirmed my thoughts, so I think they’re probably accurate, obvious too I guess.

The following statement was released:

When DailyDeal what founded in Berlin back in December 2009, there was just two of us. Since then, we have seen tremendous growth, as people throughout USA, Austria and Switzerland have used DailyDeal to find local deals on their favorite restaurants, travel destinations, entertainment venues and retail outlets. Our team has grown too, and with it, our vision for daily deal.

We see great opportunity to better connect businesses with consumers on a much larger scale, and we have found a team that shares our vision. That’s why we’re excited to announce that we’ve been acquired by Google!

What began as a two-person startup less than two years ago has transformed into a trusted platform to connect businesses with consumers. By combining our expertise with the Offers team at Google, we hope to expand our Efforts To provide even greater deals to consumers.

DailyDeal – The Team

This is interesting, I wonder whether Google will take over the Group Buying space?

PayPal to launch new platform

PayPal, like all companies, is looking to constantly evolve, set trends and keep abreast of competitors. PayPal’s next generation payment platforms are said to make us all think differently about how money works.

PayPal’s CEO recently announced that they plan to roll out the new platform over the next few months. I must admit, PayPal’s a huge company, so when they start talking about re-imaging money, you kinda have to stop for a second and actually realize that they’re going to be doing something incredibly big.

Anyway, PayPal has launched this video that’s starting to trend:
