Is Sasha Martinengo thinking about his own radio show?

So by now I guess everyone’s heard about Sasha Martinengo leaving 5FM, it’s a great loss and mornings will never be the same. I must admit, Sasha’s show is probably the one 5FM show that I still listen to, otherwise I’m tuned into KFM.

Today Sasha put out a Facebook message questioning his fans as to whether they’d be interested if he had his own radio show. Sasha went on to question whether a show with motoring, motorsport, DJ decks, The Dot Spot and F1 would tickle anyone’s interest?

Very, very, very interesting!

I reckon I’d tune in! :)

R799 for 24GB of data and a modem!

For a long time I had a friend who worked at Neotel and over the months it was clear that they were gearing up to do some big things and I think this is one of them – NeoGo.

Neotel has launched a new service offering which gives you 24GB of data and a USB modem for just R799 once off – best part, the data’s valid for 12 months! Let me rephrase that for you, you pay R799 and you get a USB modem and 24GB’s of data.

6 tech trends announced at CES 2012

Consumer Electronics Association (CES) took part this weekend. CES is a trade association that promotes growth in the consumer technology industry, so much growth that the number said was 186 billion dollars! CES 2012 took place this weekend and from what I’ve seen and read, it was a cracker.

Some new technology trends were announced that the event, they covered:

  1. Smart Applications – From kitchen appliances to televisions, everything’s getting more intelligent with the help of touch screens, applications, WiFi and other factors. This for me is a big one, I’m a serious geek and have built little devices before to control appliances, so bring it on!
  2. WiFi Cameras – A big announcement was the Sony Bloggie Live, which live streams your video, and a new Polaroid camera with an Android operating system, which means there’s finally going to be potential for a camera with 3G.. let that mind go ;)
  3. Large-Screen Smartphones – This one isn’t really a big one for me, I quite like the size of the iPhone screen and when I need bigger I use the iPad, so I’m not too sure about this, but it doesn’t take an expert to realize that bigger screens will more than likely get more popular.
  4. Celebrity-Endorsed Products – CES featured a number of celebs, including Justin Timberlake, LL Cool J, Justin Bieber, 50 Cent and more. It would appear that celebrities are catching onto the huge potential that technology has – you’ve seen all the headphones created by the celebs haven’t you? Guess the perfume fad is over ;)
  5. OLED Televisions – OLED is the latest thing in television technology. I’d recommend reading up on OLED is you aren’t sure, but a big feature is that OLED displays work without backlight, which means it can display deep black levels and can be thinner and lighter than normal LCD televisions.
  6. Silm Ultrabooks – 2011 was all about tablets, 2012′s all about ultrabooks.

Some cool trends in the mix, I can’t wait for the technologies to hit South Africa, especially the smart applications – I want my kettle to turn on via my iPhone in the morning ;)

Look & Listen MP3 Store

Look & Listen have announced the launch of their digital store which sells MP3′s. The digital store features MP3 downloads, top MP3 songs, top MP3 albums as well as South African music downloads.

After looking around the store I can tell you that the average price of a song is R9.99 and R99.99 for an album, bringing it in cheaper than a lot of resources. There are over 100 genre’s to choose from and the South African music area is expanding quickly.

Must say, I normally buy my MP3′s from International sites, at around a dollar or so, but this definitely opens up a few questions: Will the download speeds be faster, are the payment options sufficient (Credit Card, Wallet, EFT, eBucks, Mimoney, Vouchers) and so forth.

Anybody tried? http://www.lookandlisten.co.za/mp3/

Web Africa goes uncapped!

It’s been a long time coming, but something like this is worth waiting for. I’ve been using Web Africa for over a year and have only had problems twice – Once was down time for a couple hours and the other was caused by a Seacom problem, so it wasn’t even really Web Africa’s issue, so that’s technically 1 problem in over a year – not shabby at all. So, my point here is that when it comes to Web Africa, I’m totally thumbs up and to hear that they now have uncapped.. BONUS!

You’ll get unlimited data, free email addresses, a customer zone to monitor everything and a secure ADSL account. Now, here’s the best part, let’s look at the prices:

  • 384kbps – R179
  • 1Mbps – R289
  • 4Mbps – R599
  • 10Mbps – R1,699

Pretty competitive prices if you ask me. I know that MWEB users have complained and complained about uncapped Internet, so knowing that Web Africa is behind this movement makes me feel that their prices are the cheapest, purely because of their service.

Alright, alright, sounds like I’m sucking up big time, I get it, but seriously, I have no reason to lie to you about my experience, so just take my word for it – Web Africa Home Uncapped – A must try!

Steve Jobs Biography

You know those massive queues that form when Apple releases new iPhones, iPads and so forth? Well, imagine what it’s going to be like when his biography gets launched on the 24th of October!

This isn’t really news, we all know the book’s been in the making for a while now, what breaks my heart is that millions of people would have been longing for Steve to sign their books and unfortunately that will no longer be the case.

In honor of Steve, I will personally go and buy a book, a piece of his legacy in my house will be received with great pleasure.

Will you buy a copy?

Bargain hunting website for South Africans

Who doesn’t love a good bargain? Silly question really, everyone does! I came across a new website called Guzzle, which aims to provide, us South Africans, with a place to track down specials. Let’s call it a specials engine to be cool shall we? :) The best part about this website is that it covers appliances, cell phones, electronics and even groceries, so it’s not locked into a niche, which so many of these sites are.

Good items being shown on the website come from the major retailers in South Africa, Pick ‘n Pay, Makro, Dion Wired and Game, so it’s all the major brands in one easy and convenient place for you.

5 reasons why I like Guzzle:

  1. The website itself doesn’t sell anything, it’s purely an aggregator. What this means is that the website incurs the costs as a service purely for the public and the only way the website can be a success is if all of us visit it and talk about it, like I am doing here.
  2. When you choose to “buy” a product on the website, you are given details as to which store is selling the product and the best part, it looks for the closest place to your location.
  3. You can choose to set your location on the site and then decide how close the shops should be to you. In other words, I chose “Cape Town” as my location and said I wanted to see all specials within “50km” from where I am – bonus!
  4. Guzzle alerts are quite wicked - Someone signed up for a Guzzle alert on the Canon D600, for example, would have seen the camera’s price drop dramatically in under a month: from R9999 at Makro, to R9495 at Orms, finally appearing at R8499 at Makro. By singing up for alerts, you’re able to monitor the item you’d like and then purchase it at its best price.
  5. You don’t have to sign up to find the specials, which is quite rare these days, this website really is about the consumer!

The project is a self founded project, it’s not a marketing strategy or VC funded venture, the owners want to service the consumer. The owner told me that a great thing about the website is that it exposes prices to the consumer, which prevents us (the consumer) from spending money we shouldn’t be spending. Now I think that’s awesome.

Before I go, let me just mention that next Tuesday we giving away prizes, guests can just look at our http://www.facebook.com/GuzzleSA page for the competition details. Guzzle is giving away a Nintendo Wii Sports, Digital camera’s, TV etc, we just gave away R1000 cash.

For all SA’s Newspaper and Catalogue Specials, go to Guzzle.co.za.

What do Google, Facebook, Twitter employees get?

I’ve read many posts over the years that discuss the perks of working at some of the leading technology corporations, but it’s not often that this information is compiled into a visual representation, in this case, an infographic. I thoroughly enjoyed looking through this infographic, but then felt a little jealous afterwards ;)
