Months have passed since local online casino’s appealed against new laws to ban South African’s from gambling online and finally the trial has passed. On August 23, 2011, it was announced in an Appeal Court in Bloemfontein that the appeal has been denied.

With immediate effect most casino enterprises will be closing their doors to players in the South African market. So far this includes Piggs Peak Casino, Piggs Peak Poker, Piggs Peak Bingo and Volcanic Gold Casino.

There are casino’s that are still operating, such as Silver Sands Casino, which continues along strongly and many of the local casino’s will still trade, but only to International audiences. If you are an online gambler, my advice would be to withdrawal the funds you have in your account before it’s too late and if you’re desperate to gamble, head on over to Silver Sands, where the doors are still open. But remember, it is YOUR responsibility.

I think it’s a great shame, you can still walk into a casino if you need to gamble, so it’s not as though they’ve banned it on- and offline. Anyway, it’s not up to me, I just think the wrong decision has been made, in fact, like PayPal coming to South Africa, if the government was more involved, they’d probably realize that they could have made a boatload of money.

What is your view?

Online gambling has had some shady grounds for the past year or so, last year we watched the giants, Piggs Peak, Silver Sands Casino and others take their websites offline whilst a court hearing was underway.

The hearing didn’t decide in full what was to happen and several of the casino’s opened up again for usual usage. Many casino’s run their money and processes through places like Swaziland, where rules and regulations are different to that of South Africa’s, but this doesn’t stop bans on South African’s being able to use their credit cards to load up money.

Piggs Peak Casino has contacted the Reserve Bank to ask that the block on credit cards be put on hold whilst proper discussions around why Internet banking should not be banned in South Africa.

The main reason for online gambling to be banned is because it is said that gambling has a socio-economic effect on families. I don’t disagree with this, but then offline casino’s such as Grand West should be shut down too, surely?

As always, the gambling space remains highly interesting!

Ok, so this isn’t breaking news or anything, but as mobile devices become more and more popular, so does the uptake of web applications catering for them.

Naturally, the online gambling world wants to join in and take advantage of the opportunities. Microgaming is the name given to playing games on mobile devices, and casino’s like Bodog are now offering their casino’s on mobile devices.

Android is a huge competitor in the mobile market, competing against the likes of the iPhone and others. It has just been announced that various online gambling establishments are now allowing Android users to gamble online using their mobile devices.

Now, there is obviously a big difference between actual mobile applications and web interfaces that work with mobile. Web interfaces are way ahead in terms of progress, but applications will quickly become just as available and popular as the former.

Click here to visit Bodog and be sure to look at their mobile offerings!

A few months ago, the online casino industry went a little crazy when a law was passed that banned online gambling in South Africa. All of the major casino websites went offline for a week or so, but were back up again when the law went into discussion phase.

Here are some links:

Silver Sands Casino closes down

Piggs Peak Casino closes down

It wasn’t long after this that is was said that online gambling was to be legalised. So, very much up and down as you can imagine.

Anyway, African Palace Casino was involved in all of this of course, but they’ve gone really dark lately and are not paying out players nor affiliates. Despite sending emails, making calls and doing anything possible to get hold of them, dead ends are hit each time!

A quick Google search shows that hundreds of other people are complaining!

Be warned, don’t use African Palace Casino!

“The reality is that people cannot be forced to refrain from these gambling activities.”

According to Collins, a review commission is currently considering existing gambling legislation and he expects it to recommend the legalisation of online gambling.

They recently lost their application in the Pretoria High Court regardling the legality of South Africans playing on their Swaziland licensed internet casino. From now on, Piggs Peak Casino will no longer be offering South Africans access to their system.

This lock down happens from midnight tonight, until further notice. Any players who have balances on their accounts, need not worry, your money is safe and if you need to withdraw it, you can do so by emailing support@piggspeak.com and they will process it.

It’s sad to see online casino’s shutting down for South Africans, I’m sure that there could have been a better way to resolve this matter, but alas, the decisions not up to me.
