Scotty Nguyen – Yeah Baby

One of the most enjoyable poker plays to watch these days is Thuan B. “Scotty” Nguy?n, he’s the Vietnamese America guy who always says “Yeah Baby”. He’s a professional poker player, obviously, who has won the World Series of Poker five times! Most notably as the winner of the 1998 World Series of Poker Main Event and the 2008 WSOP $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. World Championship. This win also made him the first and currently only player to win both the WSOP Main Event and $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. events. He also stated that the only type of World Series of Poker event he has yet to win is 2-7 lowball. Nguyen is one of the most active players in professional poker today, and from 2000 to 2004 he finished in the money in more than 100 events.

Nguyen had to rebuild his bankroll after losing his million. His next success came at the 1997 World Series of Poker where he won the $2,000 Omaha 8 or Better netting a profit of over $150,000. Unfortunately Nguyen blew this bankroll again and was completely broke shortly before the 1998 World Series of Poker. Nguyen had to play in a small satellite tournament which he did not even have enough money to buy into. Mike Matusow saw potential in Nguyen and decided to bankroll 1/3 of the buy in.

Most recently – In 2009, Nguyen won the inaugural LA Poker Classic $10,000 H.O.R.S.E World Championship at the Commerce Casino’s annual LA Poker Classic Series. This 1st place finish earned him $339,743, and further cemented Nguyen’s reputation as one of the greatest masters of all variations of fixed limit poker.

As of 2009, his total live tournament winnings exceed $10,700,000. Of those winnings, $4,727,717 have come at the WSOP. Nguyen has also made appearances on the Ultimate Blackjack Tour playing Elimination Blackjack. Nguyen also made an appearance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien in April 2004.

Here’s a great video to show you what he’s all about:

Poker Celebrity – Sam Farha

Farha moved to the USA after the Lebanese Civil War broke out when he was in his teens. After settling in Wichita, Kansas in 1977, he attended the University of Kansas. He graduated with a degree in business administration and moved to Houston, Texas to work with his brother. Farha first played a game of poker a year after moving to Houston, and won several thousand dollars. He quit his job in 1990 to play poker full time.

Farha’s biggest tournament finish was in the 2003 World Series of Poker main event, where he finished second to Chris Moneymaker for $1,300,000. On the second day of play Farha lost a major pot to Barry Greenstein leaving him with only 10% of the average stack. He was considering leaving at this point and was talked into staying by Greenstein. He lost the final hand to Moneymaker after going all in with a pair of jacks on the flop, only to be called by Moneymaker who had flopped bottom two pair.

In a rematch between Farha and Moneymaker a few months later, organized by PokerStars, Farha won. Farha also finished in the money in the 2005 WSOP main event.

Here are some of his awards:

  1. $145,000 at the 1996 WSOP
  2. $398,560 at the 2006 WSOP

An incredible player to watch; I’m telling you, I’m yet to watch a boring hand when he’s involved!

4 tips to increase your skills with online poker

Playing online poker is completely different to playing in real life, the premise is the same, but the way you do things and read other players is completely different; here are 4 tips that will help you play better online:

Tip One – Mix Up Your Play

Once you have mastered the fundamentals of a particular game it’s very easy to lapse into mechanical play. This is particularly true when playing online. If you happen to lapse into a predictable manner of play (failing to adjust to the overall table, failing to notice the tendencies of the players to your immediate right and left, making moves without asking yourself “what am I trying to accomplish?”) then it may be time to tweak your game a bit. Instead of waiting for Queens, Kings or Aces, raise with a 5/3 off suit! Not only will it help get you out of your funk, but it’ll also keep your opponents off balance.

Tip Two – Limping isn’t Easy

Although this applies to both live and online play, we see it so often in online games that it had to be included: don’t limp when you’re the first to enter a pot! As Chris Ferguson explains, “The logic behind this tip is that since you have no money involved in the pot, if you fold you lose nothing. Therefore, if you’re going call you had better have a hand that expects to earn money—and if your hand is a favorite, you should raise. In addition, you will also stop giving away valuable information about the hands you are playing (astute players will quickly divide your holdings into raising and calling hands). By raising every time you enter a pot, you reveal the minimum amount of information possible.”In short, the best way to think about this rule is that if a hand is not strong enough to raise with, it’s probably not strong enough to call with. Of course, in poker, there is an exception to every rule. If for instance, you’re holding Aces and you know that the maniac to your left will raise if you limp in, then by all means, limp away. However, this play is a much more advanced move and you had better know what you’re doing before you try it. Not only do you risk wasting a big pocket pair, but you may easily end up going broke if your opponent limps behind you and makes two pair on the flop with a K,5.

Tip Three – Online tells

When playing online poker, most tells have to do with betting speed. The “dramatic pause” is one of the easiest to catch. In most cases, a bet preceded by an extended pause, indicates strength from a player who is trying to project weakness. On the flip side, a check preceded by an extended pause, likely indicates weakness from a player who is trying to project that he is strong enough to at least “consider” betting (most likely he’s just hoping to catch a free card.) It should also be noted that most players rarely check-raise after a dramatic pause. When attempting a check-raise, most people want to appear completely normal so as not to discourage your wager. If you are check-raised after a “dramatic pause,” tread carefully. It’s also smart to watch out for instantaneous “auto button” raises. These bets often indicate a monster hand. The player is most likely attempting to intimidate you into making a call.

Tip Four – Short-Handed Play

Most likely, a good number of the tournaments you’ll be playing online will be Sit-and-Go’s. When playing Sit-and-Go’s you’ll inevitably be faced with short-handed play. When playing short-handed, aggression is key. I’m sure you’ve seen it before: the game gets down to three or four players and suddenly the guy on your right is going nuts! He’s raising, re-raising, and completely dominating the game. To the beginner, or to those inexperienced in short-handed play, this wild-man appears to have just thrown caution to the wind. He finally shows down a hand and he’s holding K,9! However, he probably won the hand—and he probably stole a bunch o’ blinds before that. So what’s his trick? Aggression. A complete poker player must learn to play a solid aggressive game. It’s simply not enough to sit back and wait for good cards during 9/10 handed play, only to fall apart when you’re close to the big money spots We know this tip may make you a little uncomfortable if you’re generally a tight player—but believe us, once you learn to enjoy short-handed play it’s probably the most fun you’ll have at a poker table.

So there you have it, 4 fantastic tips supplied by Silver Sands Casino, the number 1 online casino.

Poker – How to play pocket kings

The second best starting hand in Texas Hold’em is pocket Kings, or as they are sometimes referred to, pocket cowboys. Here is a short discussion about pre flop and post flop play, as well as a mistake that many players make with KK in tournament play.

poker-pocket-kings

The best way to play KK pre flop is often much like you play pocket Aces, but after the flop they can sometimes be a little more tricky. You want to play against only one or two players if at all possible. The more players who see the flop with you, the less likely you will have the best hand at the showdown.

In limit Texas Hold’em, unless the table is very aggressive and you are positive that someone behind you will raise, you should raise. I will go so far as to say that if you raise pre flop every time you have KK in limit play that you won’t ever play them wrong. As you gain experience and move up in limits, you will start to see opportunities to trap with them, but even then a raise will not be incorrect.

In no-limit Texas Hold’em, the best play is to raise enough that most of your opponents fold, but not all of them. It can be hard to know the correct amount, but usually three to four times the big blind is correct. Post flop play is straightforward unless an Ace hits the board on the flop. When no Ace hits, you need to spend the rest of the hand maximizing your opponent’s contribution to the pot. When an Ace does hit, you must bet to give your opponent an opportunity to fold, unless a King also is on the flop. Then you can pretend to be weak / scared and give your opponent a chance to lose more chips.

If you bet with an Ace on the board and are called or raised, you will have a very tough decision to make. Until you reach the higher levels, where your opponents are capable of making a play at you, you should usually get away from the hand when called or raised. There is one area that I see many inexperienced players make a mistake in tournament play with pocket Kings pre flop. Especially early in a tournament, it may not be best to get all in pre flop with KK. Because of the nature of tournament play, as in if you lose all of your chips you are eliminated, early in the tournament if you can raise enough to isolate an opponent without getting all in, you will have the opportunity to survive when the flop contains an Ace.

If you get all in pre flop, many times you will be up against a hand that contains an Ace like AK, AQ or even AJ. Now I will agree that over the long run you will win these all in confrontations most of the time, but even when you are not all in pre flop, you will still win big hands when your opponent hits a Queen or Jack for top pair / top kicker but they still have the second best hand to your Kings.

The good news is that over time, you will make money with KK even if you do make a few mistakes when playing them, so it is usually better to be too aggressive with them as opposed to too weak.

Bluffing in Texas Hold’em

Deception and poker go hand in hand and when it comes to Hold’em, bluffing is key! A bluff entails tricking the other players into thinking you have a certain hand, hoping to get them to either fold or raise you, so you can capitalize off their misjudgement.

I’ve played a fair amount of poker in my life and learning to bluff is easier said than done, it takes a lot to deceive someone so perfectly and elegantly.

Here are some tips:

Tip 1: When someone at the table might have a good hand, it could be a good time to bluff and push them off the pot. A a good example is when the third of a suit hits the board – Somebody might have a flush. If you bet as if you have the flush, the other players may believe you.

Tip 2: Bluff if you are in a pot with a player that is looking for a reason to fold. By betting high and making them think you have something they can’t match, you can steal the pot from them.

Tip 3: Watch other players closely – The more you know about your opponent’s moves the better. If a player is a novice, they may bluff too frequently making them an easy target. However, it’s the more experienced players you need to watch.

RFID enabled poker table!

The chairman of an Australian IT company has built an RFID enabled poker table that could bring the same level of detail seen in televised games to the weekly rounds with your buddies.

Hoping to find a way to enjoy his hobby even more, Andrew Milner placed wireless RFID chips at the bottom of a table, fit RFID tags on a few deck of cards, and fired up quality HD cameras to accurately track every move in a game.

Currently, most poker television programs show each hand through tiny cameras installed on the table, from an individual player’s perspective. You follow the game through the feeds, and as cards are shown, drawing odds are automatically generated by a separate program. Basically, we’re allowed to count the cards.

Milner’s tracking method brings a different dimension to the game. Instead of relying on visual evidence on each hand (plus the interpretation of the announcers), each card is tracked exactly to its placement on the table.

And because the RFID chips are thin, unnoticeable, and quite flexible, they can be used in the same way as regular cards.

The technical details are pretty impressive. Milner uses four color (CCD) cameras and plugs them in through USB to a video encoder to create the main game feed. Then, a piece of software that he wrote (see app below) takes the video streams and mixes them up with the RFID data coming off the cards to create a video presentation, in real-time.

This means that he can actually record every single one his games, down to the last detail, and then broadcast it over the internet.

The result isn’t as sleek as something you’d see on a televised tournament of Hold’ Em, but it’s not like the networks are going to come down to your house and use their equipment to televise it either.

A cool application of RFID could be that we (in the audience) could know where every single card is at all times, even the placement in a vertical deck. This might remove the surprise element for the audience, but it might increase the tension in an anticipatory I-know-what’s-gonna-happen-but-he-doesn’t sort-of way.

In case you’re thinking about pulling this off yourself, it took Milner three months to make the table and cost him almost $7,000.

According to a recent interview, he is also working on a system that uses RFID to track liquor usage. This is an omen, I think. The guy will probably be brought into the fold as a Bellagio executive and will figure out a way how to ruin the invention by making it harder to steal drinks and to win a hand or two.

Huge gambling portal for South Africa

As gambling gets bigger and bigger in South Africa with the whole poker trend, it’s not surprising to see the web following similar ventures. Affiliate marketing meets gambling is a massive industry, with thousands and thousands of rands being made from simple referral links.

I enjoy my times at Grand West and have even been involved with some interesting gambling mashups, such as casino’s planting trees for new registered users!

PlayCasino.co.za is a new online portal for gambling, probably one of the biggest, if not the biggest, site in South Africa for gambling. I’ve taken a quick look at their setup and it’s impressive. I was almost involved in a similar system about 6months ago, when I was approached and asked to put together a casino review website, which would run simply on WordPress and just have an A-Z category system for the various casino’s, however, after a long chat with my partner to be, we decided we didn’t want to be involved in the gambling scene as far too many people are sucked in too deeply. I will always play poker and have no problem with companies launching websites like this, I just don’t want to run my own one.

Unexpected R888 free cash

Many months ago I signed up for Silver Sands Poker to give it a go, and I remember losing a couple hundred bucks, which I expected to do, and decided that playing without any knowledge was a silly idea, so I uninstalled the application and didn’t look back at playing poker online until recently. Over the past couple of weeks I have been watching the World Series of Poker for 2007, which inspired me to start playing a little again. Poker is such an interesting game, a game which interests me by the reading of peoples action than the money. Playing online doesn’t give you the full ability to see a person, but trust me, you can read people! Anyway, I watched the WSOP more than once and carefully watched how the players played their cards. I also watched a couple of episodes of High Stake Poker with the interest purely towards what the players did with what combinations of cards, etc.

In the last week or so I have made over R1000, which isn’t massive, but I’ve played perhaps two hours every two days, which when calculated isn’t a bad income – probably more than quite a few people earn in their day jobs (well, hourly that is). This evening I played for a couple hours and managed to break even by the time I could feel myself getting a little restless – I have decided that the minute I can feel myself getting restless that I have to quit and it’s working. Patience is another thing which is so crucial when playing poker, if you get bored/annoyed/restless, you will throw your hands away and lose of lot of money.

Anyway, back to the title of this posting – I received an email earlier from Silver Sands Poker, stating that I was eligible to receive my R888.00 bonus. I must admit, the first thing I did was check what email address it came from, and then I called the support line as they requested a copy of my ID book and the last thing I need is to be scammed. After the phone call, I can safely say that the process is legitimate – R888 completely free. The money will be transferred onto my playing account and I can choose to play with that money or withdraw it and spend it however I like – how cool is that? If you’re wondering.. I will be with-drawing R600 of it and using R200 to play on top of my current balance. I look forward to a good number of ‘free’ hands :)

Ok, well it’s almost 3am and my mind, body and soul are not in the swing of getting to bed so late these days, so I think it’s best for me to head off to la la land.

Sleep tight friends!
