Popular blogsite imod.co.za ran the following analysis after Durex’s Tweet: “I feel bad for Durex SA because I do see it as an honest mistake on their behalf, but they way in which they dealt with it was really not great; an immediate response apologising to FeministsSA might have controlled this situation a great deal better.

“I don’t excuse Durex SA at all as I think the Tweet was uncalled for, but as an honest mistake, if only they had someone who understood Online Reputation Management, they might have avoided this whole situation.”

The author, writing under the name of “Chris M” warned companies that social media campaigns could backfire.

“Think before you Tweet – Twitter is so accessible, from your mobile phone, from your laptop and even from some cars! It’s easy to just blurt out a Tweet without thinking; we’ve probably all done it, but why not be the person who doesn’t make the mistake and who thinks before tweeting, a lot of brand damage can be avoided,” the expert advised. – Cape Argus

The articles goes on to discuss how bloggers should deal with comment trolls (“those delightful, anonymous ‘voices’ that litter the online space with opinions) under the opinion of the 6 featured bloggers. The insight is really great and all bloggers should have a read of the article as there’s plenty to be learnt on a topic, which I feel is very important.

Let’s open this up, how would you deal with a comment troll?

The interview took place during the lunch show and was essentially a short piece on making a success through blogging. I was asked a few questions such as:

1. Why did I start blogging?
2. What were my expectations?
3. What blogs do I read?
4. Any advice to people?

It was a very relaxed show and I hope that the listeners learnt something or at least got a few links through the process that they can then later read.

Obviously the biggest news at the moment for Radio Netherlands is obviously the football, but it’s great to see them still working on other areas as well as giving Africa some interest!

Anyway, that’s just a little something something :)

Quite simply – I am no longer going to appear on the show; let me tell you why:

They wanted me to talk about a topic which is on a very beginner level and I was worried that it would not reflect what I do in the right light to the audience and not only that, but that I might not be able to explain it all in such simple terms, believe you me, the topic is very involved. The Weekend Argus, several weeks ago, did a story on me, more specifically about my blogging and how I make money online. This was fantastic exposure, however, it lead to around 150 emails from people asking me to help them start a blog; now you might ask what’s the problem with that? Well, the problem is that all these people are not willing to pay for the service/help and anyone who knows anything about blogging, and more importantly, setting one up and teaching someone how to use it, takes a huge amount of time. The problem with this is that I just don’t have the time to assist so many people – This would result in hours of work in the evenings when I should be relaxing and not sitting on my computer.

I guess what I’m getting at here is that sometimes we have to put the pride aside, I would have loved to get this ugly mug of mine on tele, but at the end of the day, I don’t think it would have been the right move for me and instead I recommended someone else who I felt could benefit from the exposure more than I could.

Look, I’m a little sad, I’ve been in magazines a few times and have been in the paper a couple times, television has been something I’ve wanted to do for quite some time, so I am hoping that the opportunity will come again, just more in-line with the way I was to be perceived.

I’ve been a little slack in updating my publicity thread, so this one’s being included.

The first one was on Izimvo, the voice of every South African. The idea behind Izimvo is a website which interviews South Africans giving us all the chance to learn a little more about the people we share our beautiful country with. Izimvo was started by two great chaps – Marc Forrest and Shaun Trennery. I was asked an assortment of questions, from personal to work, you can read it at the link below:

Created by a friend of mine, Jason Bagley, it has really started to evolve nicely into something I hope he’s very proud of. Does this mean blogging is moving away from fluffy “dear diary” style sites and more towards semi-professional journalistic pieces and if so, is this even a good thing? The reality is that blogging has only rarely rivalled proper researched journalism but this is rapidly changing.”
