Generation of kids which are emotionally stunted, inarticulate, hedonists with the attention span of a gnat.

“There’s nothing wrong with enjoying games. But don’t you think it’s strange that people are engaging in activities that have no purpose? Spending their precious time and money sitting in front of a screen in a make-believe world when they could be out there having love affairs and doing things in the real world?

“And that’s what worries me. That we are rearing a generation of kids that are in danger of becoming emotionally stunted, inarticulate, hedonists with the attention span of a gnat. Because they spend the majority of their time in front of a computer screen. A whole generation that can’t interact because their skills are limited to inhabiting a fantasy world on a screen.”

Written by Susan Greenfield and published on The Telegraph, this is a really interesting article, one which I can relate to, agree with and disagree with. I decided that it’s best to tell you to click here and take a full read of it rather than just publishing the whole thing here as it’s fairly long.

I’d really really love to hear your thoughts on this!

How to create a lightning globe

I’ve got one of these, which I picked up a while ago from the shop and it now lives in A Cape Town Flat by Chris M. I was curious about how it worked and whilst looking around, I came across this great video, which actually shows you how to make one, take a look at this:

Pretty cool hey – Yup, use your mind a little here and you could come up with some really awesome ideas around the same concept!

Some awesome astronomy photographs

Solar Powered Batteries in prototype phase

Even though they’re still in the prototype stage and not terribly efficient at this point, I still think these solar powered rechargeable batteries are a brilliant idea. Designed by Knut Karlsen, the SunCats are basically a set of old NiMH rechargeable batteries wrapped in a flexible Photo Voltaic cell created by the Institute for Energy Technology. When the batteries are drained, you simply leave them sitting in a windowsill or anywhere with ample sunlight and they’ll recharge themselves.

The PV cells were simply glued onto the batteries and wired up using a conductive silver pen and some flat wires scavenged from a broken canon lens. At the moment they only provide a weak trickle charge to the batteries, but Knut envisions a second version with built-in capacitors and electronics to make the charging process more efficient.
