Low clicks, high earnings!

On a daily basis I’m asked various questions about making money online using systems such as Google Adsense and one question which is repeated over and over is: How do I get more traffic?

Now, I understand that most people think they needs lots of traffic in order to make money and I totally get this – the more traffic, the more potential for an advert click (note: I’m talking CPC, cost per click, online marketing here, not CPM, CPA, etc.)

I was asked this question a few minutes ago by someone and I set forth to explain that it’s not all about traffic numbers, but rather about targetted traffic. Whilst explaining this to her, I used an example from today to show what I meant, take a look:

adsense-convertion

As you can see, just 2 clicks from 2 visits resulted in R281.52.

The most important factor for this is that you need to pick a topic for your website which targets really high paying keywords. The joy is that you don’t need to worry about the topic being competitive or not, we’re just looking for a couple hits per day to make some pocket money.

The website needs content which is fairly unique and it needs to spur the reader into wanting more information – that’s the secret. If your content/information is interesting, you’ll get the reader wanting to click that mouse of theirs to find out more, so if you can get the reader to that position and you can place your adverts in an easily accessible position, you’ll get the click – naturally, you don’t want to have links all over the website, because you want their click to be on an advert, so don’t create multiple pages, you just need one, static, page with an article and I’d suggest a decent design.

That’s it for the beginners, but if you’ve got some experience in web design, search engine optimization and making money online, you’ll probably want to read on a bit..

When you arrive in a situation like the above example where your CTR’s are up at the 80% and over mark and your keyword selection is resulting in high paying clicks, that’s when you want to start looking at increasing your traffic. If 2 clicks is making R281.52, then imagine what 10 clicks would do for you.

This is when you need to spend some time identifying and testing various keyword sets within different niches to determine which niche has the least competition – if you can spot a niche with high paying keywords and low competition, well that’s when we use the phrase “a diamond in the rough” – you’ve hit jackpot. I know it sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t realise this.

Right, so that’s my lesson for today, it’s been a while since I wrote something decent on this topic so I hope you enjoyed it.

If you’re interested in discussing SEO, making money online and all these interesting topics, please do head over to the forums, there are quite a few of us who discuss all of this.

Bing conversions are proving to be good

Frank Lee, Senior VP of Client Services, and his team found that their paid search clients are seeing dramatically improved results on Bing compared to Live Search. Even though impressions in the first 3 weeks of Bing have dropped 22% compared to the last 3 weeks of Live Search, Microsoft now seems to be serving far more relevant ads on each keyword.

The result for The Search Agency’s advertisers:

Click Through Rate up 15%
Conversions up 6%
Conversion rate up 18%
Cost per acquisition down 3%

Until now, all the industry reports on Bing have covered the increase in search volume, share of search, or total clicks. Their data is the first analysis of Bing’s impact on paid search advertising performance. With this growth in search volume, along with these improved metrics, advertisers might want to consider shifting more of their paid search spend to Bing.

How to become a Google Adwords Certified Company

A Google Adwords Certified Company is basically a company which contains a few certified individuals and has a much higher total spend in the MCC, here’s the requirements from Google:

- Have a billing and mailing address in one of these countries
- Employ at least two individuals who are qualified individuals (see above) – note that they need to be qualified with the same MCC.
- ave a minimum spend defined by the country you’re in (see here for a list) – in the US and the UK the required spend over a 90 period for the MCC is $100,000.

The major hurdle to becoming a qualified company is the spend in the MCC which is a lot bigger than for qualified individuals. Not only must you have this spend but you need to keep that level of spend over any 90-day period which can be tricky as clients come and go, especially if you’re running seasonal campaigns.

The benefits are very similar to above, you get an updated badge like this:

How to become a Google AdWords certified Individual

According to the Google advice the following is all you need to do in order to become a Google Adwords Certified Individual:

- Accept the rules of use. These basically say things like “don’t be evil” but in a few more words.
- Manage at least one Adwords account in an MCC (my client center) for 90 days.
- Have a total spend of at least $1000 (or equivalent local currency) in your MCC during the 90 day period.
- Pass the exam.

For most people, the exam is the main focus of the certification. It costs $50 each time you take the exam and I think you can take it as much as you like. Everyone at Distilled who’s taken the exam has passed first time and this shouldn’t pose much of a problem so long as you’re familiar with Adwords and have studied the lessons. It’s worth noting that you should take a look at the lessons even if you’re familiar with Adwords since they can cover things such as invoicing as well as questions about the whole spectrum of ads – from search ads to content network and banner ads. Make sure you’re familiar with the whole system, not just the stuff you use every day.

The format for the exam is 100 questions in 90 mins and you need at least 75% to pass.

The benefits of being an adwords certified individual is that you get a funky badge like this:

SEO vs SEM vs PPC

After receive several emails from readers asking about SEO, SEM and PPC, with a strong focus on which is most popular and which is best, I decided that I would touch on this to give you all a little understanding.

The first thing to look at is the overall opinion of the word when it comes to which of the three terms is being searched for most on the Internet and these were the results I gathered:

legend

seo-sem-ppc

I’m not too surprised by what I found, let me explain:

1. SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing, which I would say is the overall name used to describe all online marketing which deals with search engines. Therefore, seeing it as being the most popular phrase, I’m not too surprised.

2. SEO vs PPC – When it comes to online marketing, the two fundimental types we have are Search Engine Optimisation (What is SEO?) and Pay Per Click advertising. Naturally, PPC always has a money requirement attached to it, whereas a fair amount of SEO can be done without spending any money. From the graph we can see that SEO is starting to become more popular than PPC in the eyes of Google Trends, which is a reliable source. With the state of the economy and the huge competition facing web startups, it makes sense for people to explore SEO over PPC.

Here’s something to remember:

SEO – Long Term, Large Capital Injection, Lower Running Costs
PPC – Short Term, Average Capital Injection, Higher Running Costs

The secret is to follow the same trend as the graph above shows, start with both SEO and PPC when you’re trying to get established on the Internet and in time, when the SEO kicks in, you’ll be able to reduce your PPC.

Don’t try and do it yourself, it’s incredibly easy to damage your rankings, spent the money and have a professional do it for you, the outcome will be favourable – trust me!

How to setup conversion tracking with Google AdWords

Running Adwords campaigns is becoming more and more popular with online marketers – being able to advertise in a very direct manner leads to a larger number of convertions than traditional wide-spread advertising does.

Knowing whether your Adwords campaigns are running successfully, we’re able to setup conversion tracking.

Before I explain how to do this, let’s define what a conversion is. A conversion is when a user clicks your Adwords adverts, follows a path of actions and completes a task. For example, if you are trying to get users to complete a form on your website, a conversion would then take the following user journey:

Click Adwords advert -> navigation to form -> fill out form -> submit form.

Right, let’s look at setting up tracking.

1. Log into your Google Adwords account
2. Click on “Conversion Tracking” under Campaign Management
3. Click on “Create a new action”
4. Complete the form

Notes:

- You do not need to add a revenue value for the action
- Customizing the tracking indicator is not critical, I often select the “none” option.

Once you have completed the form, submit it and you’ll be given the tracking code. This tracking code needs to be placed right before the </body> tag in the HTML. For explanation sakes, using the example above about filling out a form, you would place this code on your thankyou.html page.

That’s it, you’ve now setup Conversion Tracking ~ well done! :)

Tip:

When running adwords campaigns, avoid using general terms, rather target your keywords very accurately.

Example

Let’s assume we have a store which sells computer monitors, would would naturally think of using “monitors”, “computer monitors”, “PC Monitor”.. now, as much as these are keywords, they are highly untargeted and might lead to a large number of clicks, but very few sales. What we rather want to do is use keywords such as “Buy computer monitor” or “where to buy computer monitors” – What you are doing here is specifically targeting people who are probably interested in purchasing a monitor, rather than people who might just be looking for random information about computer monitors and aren’t interested in purchasing one.

Here’s an example of one of my campaigns, which has been running since April 1st 2009..

Good luck experimenting and I hope you see those conversions increase quickly!
