DIGITAL LIFE AFTER DEATH

Investing & Money, Technology
piece written on the 26th October 2016 by
I've written about life insurance, medical aid and other financial matters a number of times on my blog. I've also tried my best to incorporate technology related material. This is a way of sharing two of my passions with all of you. I don't often get the opportunity to write something where I take a shot at combining the two passions together into one post, but that changes today. I have been commissioned to write a review on the topic of digital life after death. Hippo.co.za, our favourite insurance comparison engine, recently published an article entitled "Facebook, Death and Grieving" and they asked me to spend some time building upon it. Befor...

MAC AUTOMATOR: BATCHING TURNS ME ON ;)

Technology
piece written on the 31st January 2016 by
This evening I came across Mac Automator and I sat here for a while trying to figure out how I've never come across it before. I consider myself a serious super user when it comes to computers and with my programming background I like to think that I am good at finding ways to speed up processes and workflows. With Mac Automator in my back pocket, I'm going to be able to save myself several hours of work every single month when it comes to reporting. See, every month when I send a suite of documents, I have to open the documents to change the dates, then save the documents, convert them to PDF and then close them. Considering that there are often 30 or so, it's a horrible time waster. This is where Automator comes into play. Automator is like those batch creators where you can set up s...

Personal & Lifestyle, Technology
piece written on the 14th August 2015 by
As a child, I remember watching Back to the Future I, II and III. One of our biggest memories is of course.. the hoverboard! For how many years have we longed to see a hoverboard in real life? Oh the memories: I cannot even believe that I'm writing this blog post - I wasn't sure that the day would come but here it is and I'm hear to show you that Lexus have made a HOVERBOARD. Just take a watch of this: ...

MEERKAT: EYES ON THE WORLD

Technology
piece written on the 23rd March 2015 by
This weekend whilst cycling with some buddies, one of them told me about Meerkat. This morning my wife told me about Meerkat.. when various people start telling you about something and you log into Facebook and see it everywhere, it's a clear sign that it's something big. It's also a sign that you're late to the party, but let's not get into that ;) In short, Meerkat is a mobile application that lets you live stream what you're doing with a click of a button. In other word...

NETFLIX IS COMING TO SOUTH AFRICA

Technology
piece written on the 22nd January 2015 by
There have been some great announcements recently, just yesterday Whatsapp announced it's desktop version and now Netflix has announced that it's coming to South Africa. This is really great news - just a few weeks ago the biggest story floating around the Internet was all about Netflix blocking various proxy services and for a while there I thought that we'd never have real access. This...

WHATSAPP ON YOUR DESKTOP COMPUTER!

Technology
piece written on the 21st January 2015 by
If there was ever an application I wanted on my computer and not just on my mobile phone, it would be Whatsapp. Well, that is coming true as of today (I'll come back to this), Whatsapp have launched a web app that runs inside your Google Chrome browser. It's unfortunately not a native application, but I really do feel that it would be a wise move for them to venture down that road as I believe it will be well supported and appreciated. Introducing: https://web.whatsapp.com/ ...

INTRODUCING: DUET DISPLAY – IPAD...

Technology
piece written on the 21st December 2014 by
I've owned an iPad and an iPad Mini for a really long time, the iPad was quickly taken by my wife and I was left with the iPad Mini. To be honest, I haven't really found too much use for the iPad Mini - at the moment it sits on my desk at work and displays share prices, but that's essentially all. What I wanted was to be able to extend my desktop onto it as a second monitor but all the software I tried failed horribly - either compatibility issues or massive lag. Well, that was until yesterday when I came across Duet Display (http://w...

SUCCESS THROUGH SOLVING A PROBLEM

Marketing & Business, Technology
piece written on the 23rd November 2014 by
They say that one of the best ways to launch a company is through solving a problem and if you think about it, that's fairly logical. However, coming up with a problem to solve is difficult, one must be very perceptive and present in life, always taking note of things - I often say that keeping a notebook or application handy is a good way of doing this. Or, to find the headspace to step back from life and assess which areas cause the most hassle/trouble. Brooke Martin, a 14 year old girl came up with an incredib...

MY 2 USEFUL IFTTT RECIPES

Marketing & Business, Technology
piece written on the 21st November 2014 by
IFTTT is one of the most useful applications on the Internet. It's one of those out-the-box applications that is powerful, but with your own intelligence you can make it even more powerful and the options are endless. IFTTT stands for If This Then That and that's exactly what it is. You create what is known as a recipe for example: IF i write a blog post THEN send out a tweet about it. Or, if I post a link on Facebook then automatically tweet it as well. IFTTT allows for excellent automation and efficiency - things that I, as a digital marketer, look for to optimise my processes online. ...

SEEDING A NEW PRODUCT WITH TWITTER

Technology
piece written on the 20th November 2014 by
I was chatting to a friend the other day who is launching a new product in the not too distant future and he was asking me whether I knew some ways to get the product seeded into the right influencers hands. He has someone to actually handle this task for him so time isn't a big concern, he's one of those guys who wants quality over quantity, which I greatly appreciate. His specific request was to be able to engage with the right people within his industry and we agreed that email was not the correct approach at this point. His target audience is South Africa. After a fair bit of discussion we agreed that Twitter could be a great approach for this and he asked me to find out who the influencers are. Now there are a lot of ways to do this, but most of them are rather time consuming so I ...
