Corporate WordPress Theme

Yesterday I talked about a photography WordPress theme, which really impressed me and this evening I’ll tell you about a Corporate WordPress Theme called Cohesion.

This theme is perfect for your business website, or to be honest, you could use it for a personal website too :)

Cohesion presents us with something brand new and completely unique, a collage which automatically generates itself based on a category of your choice. In other words, if you decide to have a category called “Featured”, the collage area will automatically fetch an image from each post and generate the thumbnails to create the collage – it really is quite awesome. Struggling to understand? Click here for a demo.

Apart from this amazing feature, there are several more:

  • Home Page Grid – Cohesion allows you to specify which content to feature in the Home Page Grid. You may select any permutation of single or multiple post categories. Leaving the selectors unchecked uses the “latest content from all categories” default.
  • Navigation Options – Mimic the complexity or simplicity of your content subjects with custom Pages navigation that effortlessly guides your readers to the information they’re looking for.
  • Select your Colour Scheme – Choose from 6 great colour schemes – red, blue, green, purple, aqua or greyscale – to easily change the entire feel of your blog design.
  • Background Texture Picker – Choose from a range of 12 background textures. These textures interact with the overall theme colour scheme, to offer a wide range of looks.
  • Cufon Custom Fonts – For users who prefer to use custom fonts, Cohesion allows for the upload and use of Cufon font files. Now you can use a wide range of really gorgeous fonts to dress your site.
  • Threaded Comments – Keep your blog comments conversational and encourage your visitors to engage with each other through threaded comments.

How’s that for a bundle of awesome features?!

Is your WordPress site PHP5 ready?

When WordPress 3.2 is released, it is no longer going to cater for PHP4, which means that if your server is running PHP4, you’re probably going to have problems. Remember, you don’t need to upgrade to WordPress 3.2, but obviously it’s best if you do, especially if WordPress is updating their software because of security problems.

If you’re not sure what version of PHP your server is running (this is where you host your website), you can contact your hosting company and ask them or you can use this handy site: http://php5ready.ithemes.com/ – Just plug in your website address and it will tell you.

There’s a really good chance that the website will report back with “Upgrade Recommended” – this isn’t the end of the world, but if you’re wanting to upgrade to WordPress 3.2, then it would be a good idea to contact your host and inform them of what is happening.

Being up to date is a good thing though, from a security perspective to a functioning perspective.

WordPress theme for photographers

It’s been a while since I talked about a WordPress theme and I apologise for that, but things have been busy and it’s been a while since I saw a really great one. Parallax changed this, a WordPress theme that is designed specifically for photographers, but not limited to photographers.

Here’s a quick peak:

Apart from offering a fancy options panel, cross browser compatibility, widgetized areas, SEO and an assortment of other standard features, the theme also offers these unique features:

  • The theme is designed for WordPress 3.0 and makes use of the custom navigation, background colours/images and custom post types.
  • The theme comes in both a light and a dark background option, which you can switch at any point.
  • There’s a funky image carousel on the home page, which cycles through your photographs.
  • Automatic image resizing and generation to take the pain out of resizing photographs without losing quality.
  • Custom post types will help you achieve the perfect look for your photographs

Probably the best photography theme for WordPress that I’ve seen. If you want to see a demo, click here.

Press – Minimalist WordPress Theme

I’ve decided that I should do a series on WordPress Themes and showcase some of the themes which are doing well and more importantly, allow you to create a website with a good flexible foundation.

Today’s theme is called Press, created by David and Marc from Obox-Design.

Press is a minimalist WordPress theme, which could be used for a number of different sites. The simplicity of the theme will allow those of you who can code, to easily make modifications, and for those of you who don’t code, you’ll have a very clean, sleek and neat theme as a foundation for your new venture.

The ‘gallery’ for this theme is different to any of the other sites we have created. Its layout allows you to use it as a gallery, a portfolio or even a product listing page. The home page is customizable as each row is its own widget. This allows you to move the content around and declare different categories for each of the rows.

The theme comes in a number of colours: Red, Maroon, Apple Green, Black & White, Black & Blue, Dark Purple and Cream & Purple, so you can change your theme from season to season and have it appear nice and fresh for your visitors.
