Letters to Steve

Through his incredible foresight and technological mastery, Steve Jobs touched billions of people’s lives around the world over several decades. He attracted a cult-like following that lined up to buy the computers and gadgets produced by Apple Inc. Over the years, people discovered the e-mail address of Jobs and took to regularly sending him messages. That he often responded was as unusual as his leadership style and his processes for crafting hit products.

Mark Milian, a technology writer for CNN, has reviewed more than a hundred of these e-mails, compiled from those posted by fans to blogs and online message boards. Some never-before-published e-mails from Jobs were shared exclusively for this book. As a whole, these correspondences provide a behind-the-scenes and inside-the-mind account of Jobs’ final and most triumphant years. During this time, he returned to Apple and led the beleaguered computer maker from the brink of bankruptcy to becoming the most valuable technology company in the world, while also managing Pixar Animation Studios, an innovative production company that rocketed the Walt Disney Company into a new era of family films.

This book is based on interviews with many of the customers and fans Jobs communicated with. These tales reveal the intricacies of how Jobs portrayed himself as likable and accessible through direct interaction with fans. He handled customer-service inquiries himself and carefully revealed hints about upcoming Apple products, guaranteeing headlines on blogs. However, some of these letters, when analyzed, provide a glimpse into his “reality distortion field,” in which he lobs insults, bends the truth and uses misdirection in order to manipulate anyone on the receiving end. This book has been self-published in digital form, and is not associated with or endorsed by CNN.

Website helps identify London looters

Whilst watching Sky News I heard a reporter talk about CCTV publishing photographs of the looters and actually wondered to myself whether publishing them on Facebook would assist with finding and tagging people, but then I figured people would mess with it.

A new website called Zavilia.com has launched which publishes photographs of the looters and once several people have identified a looter, the looters name is sent to the police. They do have a Facebook page as well, which is gaining momentum and they’re urging people to submit photographs.

The website basically shows a number of photographs and next to the photographs is a submission form, which allows you to name and shame these scum bags.

I think it’s a great idea, I hope these people are caught and taught a lesson.

London riots increase Amazon sales

I’ve been watching a lot of Sky News over the past couple days since the looting started in London. Personally, I’m not quite sure what to think about all of it, apart from sorrow; sorrow for the kids who feel they need to behave like this to be seen or to get things they want. There’s clearly a problem with parenting is kids are acting like this. I’m also amazed at how few police forces were available to stand up to them – watching video’s of police running from the kids is something the Prime Minister needs to address because this is just kids, it could be way worse (the parties involved that is).

Like anything, there’s always something on the Internet that comes along which adds a pinch of tongue and cheek. I was sent the link to the Movers and Shakers section on Amazon, this section shows which products are experiencing inclines in sales and are clearly popular picks.

Anyway, this is what you’ll see:

Sure, there might be no link, but it’s a little bit of a coincidence don’t you think?

Anyway, despite the little bit of humour here, my thoughts do go out to all those people in London and surrounds, I hope the chaos stops soon so things can go back to normal!

News of the World shuts down

The News of the World has shut down, one of the biggest media publications, the biggest in the UK, ever to exist. I haven’t followed the phone hacking situation too much, but have a general idea of what went down, so it would appear that all of this is causing way more damage than I actually thought, despite knowing it was very serious.

The website shuts down with a simple message about being the world’s greatest newspaper from 1843 to 2011 and they’ve announced a final Souvenir Edition, which can be purchased and a pound from each purchase will go to a charity.

The Telegraph published an article entitled, “News of the World shut down in bid to end phone hacking scandal”, which you can read here.

Here’s what the website looks like:

Fox News Twitter account hacked!

Fox news has a Twitter account for its political subjects, the account is found at @foxnewspolitics. This account was hacked earlier this morning when tweets about Obama being assassinated were spotted!

Vice president and general manager of Fox News Digital said, “We will be requesting a detailed investigation from Twitter about how this occurred, and measures to prevent future unauthorized access into FoxNews.com account,”.

Here’s what they did:

I find it interesting, I understand that turning to Twitter is part and parcel of solving this, but my guess is that either their Fox News’ server was hacked, or an employee’s email was hacked or something to that nature. Twitter has hundreds of ‘celebrities’ using their service and accounts don’t get hacked often enough for there to be an exploit.

Never-the-less, let’s watch closely and see what comes of this.

Zimbabwe government hacked by Anonymous

I said it earlier today, hacking’s on the up and I must admit, hitting here in Africa, I didn’t think we’d have a hack on our continent, but clearly I was very wrong.

A file was released on Twitter earlier today and is said to contain usernames and encrypted passwords from different zones on the Zimbabwean government website. Continue reading →

Williams sisters out of Wimbledon

I’ve watched Wimbledon since 199x and have always kept my fingers on the pulse. The Williams sisters didn’t start off as fans of mine, but over the years they ‘matured’ into women I have grown huge respect for. In fact, this year I was holding thumbs for them, hoping one of them would at least make the finals, but alas, both sisters are out.

Venus lost to Pironkova and Serena lost to Bartoli. Bartoli took the match 6-3, 7-6 and Pironkova 6-3 6-3. I’m quite bleak about this, but both winners played incredibly well and deserved to win, so may the best woman go through of course!

The men’s side is getting great too, I’ve watch some excellent matches with Nadal, Federer and djokovic, and I’m looking forward to when all these gents play against each other, that’s when the games are going to get brilliant!

Have you been watching?

Wimbledon’s pumping out the Tweets

With Wimbledon is full force, I can’t always be at a TV to watch the matches, so instead I have to turn to social media channels and thank goodness Wimbledon’s engaging!

The @Wimbledon Twitter account has over 100,000 followers and the account tweets about all sorts of things, including various links to listen to podcasts with coverage of the day’s highlights or interviews with the players. So, if you’re into tennis, then this really is a great place to source the latest news on what’s going down.

I did manage to catch a highlights pack and a game with Murray, which was a bit sad as his opponent couldn’t handle the pace and went 6-0 6-0 in the last two sets, but it was great to get into the spirit none the less and I’m amped for the games ahead. I’ve got my booklet and I’ll be marking off all the matches leading up to the finals.

There are a few others places to watch the action online:

  1. Radio Show
  2. Video Content on NBC
  3. ESPN Live Streaming

Of course, you can also stay up to date on Wimbledon.com

It’s going to be an amazing tournament this year, be sure to tune in!

Osama bin Laden has been killed

It doesn’t matter where you’re looking today, the biggest news is about the death of Osama bin Laden, one of the most feared terrorists in the world. The news broke earlier today and since then it’s carried like wildfire over the Internet. It didn’t take long for “Osama bin Laden” to start trending on Twitter at all and no matter where I looked online, it was being broadcast.

Here’s US President Barack Obama giving a speech on the matter:

There are a collection of resources on this, so if you’re interested in reading further, here are some sources:
