Thought you might all need to know that from the 1st of March 2010, all taxpayers who use their personal vehicles for business travel are required by SARS to complete a logbook separating business travel mileage from that of private travel mileage in order to claim travel expenses.

Pastel Payroll has launched an Online Travel Logbook to provide tax payers with an easy-to-use Online Travel logbook for this purpose. Visit http://www.pastelpayroll.co.za/Pastel-Payroll-Software-Logbook/Travel-Logbook.asp

I usually don't allow people to just come and pop things in here like this, but I'll let this one slide. Please could you tell us a little more about the subject of logbooks, for those of us who don't really understand..

    Thanks Chris.

It's essentially as it sounds. SARS requires all tax payers who submit a travel allowance or a travel deduction as part of their SARS tax return to keep a detailed log of their business travel (from 01 March 2010 to 28 February 2011). SARS has done this to avoid tax payers using travel allowances or travel deductions to save on tax amounts, even though they don't travel on behalf of their business/employer – which is tax evasion.

There is a number of logbook alternatives including SARS’ logbook with is a formula driven, editable PDF. In addition, people who utilise a GPS tracking device in their cars can call their service providers to see if they offer a similar service.
