South Africa Public Holiday Monday 16th

There’s hardly anything better than hearing that a public holiday is coming up, and what better than a Monday! I’m sooo stoked – Long Weekend – Sleep catchup!

Day of Reconciliation.

Some background:

During the earlier part of the 19th century, many Afrikaner farmers left the eastern cape and moved inland. Among them was the Voortrekkers, a group of Afrikaners protesting British colonialism and seeking independent republics on what was reputedly empty land. But the land was not empty and clashes between these Afrikaners and indigenous peoples were inevitable.

Late in 1837 one of the Voortrekker leaders, Piet Retief, entered into negotiations for land with Dingane, the Zulu king. In terms of the negotiations Dingane promised the Voortrekkers land on condition they returned cattle to him stolen by Sekonyela (the Tlokwa chief). This Retief did and apparently he and Dingane signed a treaty on 6 February 1838. During the ceremony Dingane had Retief and his entourage murdered – an event which was witnessed by Francis Owen, a missionary who described the scene in his diary.

In ensuing battles between Zulus and Voortrekkers over the next few months numerous lives were lost on both sides.

On 16 December 1838 about 10 00 troops under the command of Dambuza (Nzobo) and Nhlela attacked the Voortrekkers, but the 470 Voortrekkers, with the advantage of gun powder, warded them off. Only three Voortrekkers were wounded, but more than 3 000 Zulus were killed during the battle.

In apartheid South Africa 16 December was known as Day of the Vow, as the Voortrekkers in preparation for the battle took a Vow before God that they would build a church and that they and their descendants would observe the day as a day of thanksgiving should they be granted victory. With the advent of democracy in South Africa 16 December retained its status as a public holiday, however, this time with the purpose of fostering reconciliation and national unity.

No more ‘is’ in the Facebook status

The day has arrived, Facebook have finally removed the ‘is’ from the Facebook status message. We’ve all been waiting for this to happen for quite some time now and here it is!

No more ‘is’ in Facebook status

I could never figure out why this had not happened, nor could I figure out why it was taking so long. It’s a simple click of the backspace key, literally. Well, it’s done now, and it’s a good edition. Something so small, yet so annoying, gone!

It’ll be interesting to see how long it takes for people to realise the change!

Long live social networking :)

Cloned cats with fluorescence protein gene

They’re cute, white, and fluffy – and they glow in the dark when exposed to ultraviolet light. The cats are actually clones. They’re also the first cats to be cloned with a manipulated fluorescence protein gene.

Glow in the dark cats

The researchers hope that the procedure could help develop treatments for human genetic diseases.

The scientists, from Gyeongsang National University in South Korea, explained that they used the skin cells of the mother cat for cloning. To modify its genes, they inserted a virus in the skin cells, which were then transplanted into the mother’s womb. Four Turkish Angora kittens were born in January, but two died during a caesarean section. The two living cats, now nearly a year old, weigh about 6-7pounds.

Fluorescence Gene in cats

By demonstrating that it’s possible to clone an animal with a manipulated gene, the research could help scientists better understand human genetic diseases. For example, scientists may be able to reproduce cloned animals suffering from the same diseases as humans. Cats have about 250 of the same kinds of genetic diseases that affect humans.

The ability to clone genetically altered cats may also help to develop new stem cell treatments for humans. And, using the same technology, researchers may be able to clone endangered animals like tigers, leopards and wildcats.

Honestly, I can’t believe the degrees to which people will go in order to get recognition.   I’m sorry, but “The ability to clone genetically altered cats may also help to develop new stem cell treatments for humans” just doesn’t justify this for me. After reading the article, I felt a worry inside, not just because these poor cats are being completely used, but a general worried feeling towards cloning. Cloning of mammals is something I am very much against, I don’t feel it’s a technology which the world needs to exercise – we were put here to do what ever we do and when our time comes, it comes. If we need more humans, have sex for petes sake! If we need more of a specific species of animals, take the time and care to mate then correctly. I know I am slightly biased on this matter due to my religious beliefs, but my thoughts cannot just be side lined.

  • Would you support cloning of mammals?
  • Do you feel that “The ability to clone genetically altered cats may also help to develop new stem cell treatments for humans” justifies the cloning and altering of cats?

Those questions both get a big NO from my side.

The Internet owned AGLOCO, is a better slogan!

Agloco Internet

Affiliate marketing and such is a tricky business and once again it’s got the better of another company, this time – AGLOCO. I remember reading about AGLOCO many moons ago and thinking to myself that it would never work, and I was right on this one. Their slogan states ‘AGLOCO own the Internet’, haha, the Internet owned AGLOCO

John Chow (www.johnchow.com) wrote an article about it today. He noticed that AGLOCO never renewed their SSL certificate, which is a dead sign for something going horribly long. He decided to email the company and find out what was happening. The response he got was as follows:

Dear John,

We would like to update you on the status of AGLOCO’s operations. We continue to believe in the AGLOCO concept, but our revenue is currently not sufficient to give Members a meaningful distribution. And though there are increases in membership, the resulting revenue is not enough to support operating costs. As a development team we are unable to continue to use our savings to fund the operations. If any Member would like to pursue continuing the operations of AGLOCO, you may contact us at agloco1@live.com.

We would like to thank every Member for supporting our effort to bring a piece of the Internet directly to the user. We hope that we can find a way to keep the operations going.

AGLOCO Development Team

And as Mr Chow says, “those MBA grads should have got some street smarts to go with their book smarts” ~ I couldn’t agree more. The online world is about experience and practise, applying educated material to the online world just won’t cut it anymore, things have moved forwards, we’re living web 2.0 after all!

Interestingly enough, the AGLOCO website (www.agloco.com) is still up and running from what I can tell, I wonder when the domain will become suspended, perhaps I should make them an offer for the domain?

Pete Yorn

Pete Yorn (www.peteyorn.com), another easy listening addition to my music collection :)

Pete Yorn was born in New Jersey to a dentist (father) and a former concert-pianist turned school-teacher (mother). Yorn taught himself to play drums at age nine and soon moved on to guitar. Yorn attended Montville High School in Montville, New Jersey. In 1990, while drumming for his band in a high-school talent contest, someone suggested that he sing The Replacements’ song “Talent Show.” It went over well enough that a competing band requested that he sing Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” with them.

Yorn was encouraged enough to maintain a focus on music while attending Syracuse University (class of 1996) where he was a major in the department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies and a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. After graduating, Yorn moved to Los Angeles, where he began to attract a following with his performances at Cafe Largo. Film producer Bradley Thomas (‘Kingpin’ & ‘There’s Something About Mary’) liked Yorn’s act enough to request Yorn send him some rough demos for possible inclusion in the Farrelly Brothers’ film Me, Myself and Irene. Soon after, Yorn landed a job scoring all of the music to the film and also contributed the songs Strange Condition and “Just Another” to the film and its soundtrack. “Just Another” was also featured on the television shows Felicity, Dawson’s Creek, and Smallville. In addition to appearing on the Me, Myself, and Irene soundtrack, Pete Yorn’s recordings have appeared on other movie soundtracks, including Orange County (2001), Spider-Man (2002) and Shrek 2 (2004).

After experiencing this taste of success, Yorn released his 2001 LP debut, entitled musicforthemorningafter, which went gold on the strength of the album’s lead single, “Life on a Chain.” Rolling Stone Magazine named Yorn one of “Ten [artists] to Watch in 2001″ and gave the album a favorable four-star rating.

Yorn went on to release the 2003 album Day I Forgot which has sold over 300,000 copies to date and scored a third radio hit with the song “Come Back Home.”

In 2006, Yorn released his third album, Nightcrawler.

Legendary guitarist Peter Buck of the band R.E.M. has made appearances on several Pete Yorn recordings, including instrumentation on the single version of “Strange Condition” and a number of songs from the Day I Forgot LP. Yorn has worked with producer Ken Andrews of Failure and Year of the Rabbit on all three of Yorn’s studio albums, in addition to several other producers including Butch Walker and Sonic Youth producer Don Fleming.

Yorn has shared bills with the Dave Matthews Band, R.E.M., The Foo Fighters, Weezer, Coldplay, The Dixie Chicks, and Semisonic, among others.

He is currently touring with the recently-reunited Crowded House on their first tour in over a decade.

New Google Ajax Adsense Units

As a web developer and blogger, I’ve been involved with Adsense generation for a long time and watch the system closely for anything new. We’ve seen the adverts expand in colours, shapes and sizes. Not too long ago, Google implemented the option to ‘view more’ adverts from an adsense unit. But today, I noticed something very much cooler and in my opinion far more effective – Ajax Adsense Units.

Ajax Adsense

As you can see from the image above, there are two little arrows facing left and right. Once clicked upon, the adverts slide either left or right and are replaced with fresh adverts. Pretty nifty and unobtrusive if you ask me.

I found myself sitting here and wondering whether this favoured the publisher, advertiser or consumer? Honestly, I think Google has hit it spot on – it favours no more more, nor does it detract income from publishers. In my opinion, I feel it favours advertisers more as well as consumers, as consumers have a wider range of choices and advertisers get more exposure.

All in all I think Google has done a great job with their Ajax Adsense Units!

M r. Cadbury and Miss Rowntree met on a Double Decker. It was After Eight.

She was from Quality Street, he was a Fisherman’s Friend. On the way they stopped at a Yorkie Bar, he had a Rum and Butter, she had a Wine Gum.

He asked her name, “Polo, I’m the one with the hole” she said. “I’m he one with the nuts,” he thought! Then he touched her Milky Way.

They checked in to a hotel, and went straight to the bedroom. Mr. Cadbury turned out the light for a bit of Black Magic. It wasn’t long before he slipped his hand into her Snickers and felt her Cream Egg. He fondled her Flap Jacks then he showed her his Curly Wurly and Tic Tacs.

Miss Rowntree wasn’t keen to have any Jelly Babies, so she let him take a trip down Bourneville Boulevard via her Party Ring. He was pleased as he always fancied a bit of Fudge. It was a magic moment as she let out a scream of Turkish Delight. When he pulled out, his fun size Mars Bar felt a bit Crunchie. She wanted more, but he needed Time Out, however, he
Noticed her Pink Wafers looked very appetizing. He did a Twirl, had a Picnic in her Sherbet Dip and finished off by giving her a Gob Stopper!

Unfortunately, Mr. Cadbury then had to go home to his wife, Caramel.

Sadly he was soon to discover he had VD. It turned out Miss Rowntree had been with Bertie Bassett who had Allsorts!!!

10 Absolute “Nos!” for Freelancers

I came across this post the other day and have wanted to post it ever since. I finally got to the end of the queue and the article is ready for posting, so here it is, finally.

I can related to Samuels experience completely, it’s an interesting and very accurate analysis!  Here’s what his opening paragraph is:

“When I first started freelancing as a college student, I was eager to do any website and would say “Yes” to anything, regardless of my skill set or the time involved. It was just nice to know that someone needed me for a skilled task. Unfortunately, I quickly found myself working all the time, eating Ramen noodles, and not getting anywhere in terms of paying off my wonderful college debt. To make things worse, these people were also giving my contact info out to other such people (you know, the lady who has been thinking about selling dog sweaters online and has a $100 budget for an e-commerce site, 1000 brochures, and a guaranteed #1 Google search result for the words “dog”, “sweater”, and “love”).

Anyways, now four years later, my world (AND financial success) now requires ample use of the answer “No.” And here are ten questions I nearly always answer “No” to:”

  1. Can you show me a mock-up to help us choose a designer/developer? No.
  2. Can you give us a discount rate? No.
  3. Will you register and host my site? No.
  4. Can you copy this site? No.
  5. Can I pay for my e-commerce site from my website sales? No.
  6. I have a great idea. Do you want to…? No.
  7. Do you have an IM account? No.
  8. Can I just pay the whole amount when it’s done? No.
  9. Is there any way you could get this done tonight or this weekend? No.
  10. Can I be sure you won’t use this work in anything else? No.

This is probably one of the most accurate articles I ‘ve ever read. I can relate to almost every single point he has made above and they are all spot on!

He goes on to explain each point above in a little more detail, so make sure you read the original 10 Absolute “Nos!” for Freelancers.

Jessica Simpson Naked in Hollywood

Jessica Simpson procliaims herself as a hard working, dedicated actress and she feels that in order to gain respect of this nature, she needs to bare all in her next Hollywood movie.

Jessica Simpson Naked

A source said, “Jessica is in the running for a role that, if she gets it, will put her right on the map in terms of acting.”

“The only hitch is that the script requires a number of quite graphic scenes including a full-frontal nude scene. Jessica is so desperate to land the role and get the industry’s respect that she’s ready to go against her better judgment, and her family, by agreeing to bare all.”

Earlier this year, Jessica’s father Joe Simpson forced her to turn down a potentially Oscar-winning role as a porn star, insisting she keep her clothes on.

“The last script that came to us was for Jessica to be a porn star. We were promised we would win an Oscar with that. I told them, ‘I think we’ll just buy a statue of a little man and keep our clothes on,’ ” He said.. “Jessica’s movie career has stalled of late, with her most recent film ‘Blonde Ambition’ called a disaster and failing to gain a cinema release.”

It will be interesting to watch what happens from here..
